        Langerhans cell histiocytosis

        Langerhans cell histiocytosis(LCH) appears to arise from Langerhans cell and comprises a spectrum of clinical disease previously described in the literature by a variety of eponyms including histiocytosis X, eosinophilic granuloma, Hand-Christian disease, and Letterer Siwe syndrome. This rare disorder occurs in all groups, predominently affecting children & young adults. LCH has a wide spectrum of clinical features. The differentiation of several forms of this disease is primarily a clinical and not a histologic one. The radiographic characteristics include the appearance of solitary "intraosseous" lesios, the multipicity of "alveolar bone" lesions, the bone lesions, periosteal new bone formation, and slight root resorption. Prognosis of a single bone lesion, is known to be excellent. In contrast, disseminated disease has seen associated with a chronic course, a high rate of morbidity and late consequences, and possible mortality. Treatment of LCH remains problematic. Treatment of multisystem disease, where organ function is being compromised has generally been with high-dose systemic corticosteroids or multiple chemotherapy.

      • UWB band CMOS QVCO 설계

        A quadrature voltage controlled oscillator(QVCO) with MOS-varactors has been designed for UWB applications. The QVCO consists of two cross-coupled differential cores. Using the TSMC CMOS libraries, harmonic balance simulation has been performed with the Agilent's ADS. The QVCO exhibits the frequency tuning range from 7.03 GHz to 10.25 GHz with phase noise from -95 dBc/Hz to -105 dBc/Hz at an 1 MIIz-offset frequency. The total current through the core is 28 mA.

      • EMTDC를 이용한 전력계통의 전압저감현상 해석

        In this paper, the voltage sags, which are momentary dips in voltage and usually caused by faults or sudden increases of major loads, of actual and model power systems are simulated using EMTDC. The simulation results on the several sorts of faults, that is, single phase to ground faults and three phase ground faults are analyzed and discussed in detail. It is obvious to say that both the configuration of transmission systems and the distance of fault point from the interested bus heavily affect the voltage sags, and the connection type of transformer also has explicit influence on the voltage sags. It is strongly emphasized, through the test results of the study, that the analysis of actual power systems using EMTDC is needed in order to evaluate the present situations on voltage profiles precisely, and consider those results in operation and expansion planning of the power systems. Sort of useful informations, which can be used for the purpose of practical applications, are also extracted and given in detail.

        The one-electron theory of atoms, molecules, and crystals have enjoyed a wide success in many branches of physics. This theory provides a physically appealing description of the electronic structure of many-electron systems. In addition, this theory gives a convenient basis for performing the detailed calculation on specific many-electron systems. In such calculations, it is usually necessary to introduce many simplified assumptions in order to make a progress. Since the principal computational difficulty supposed by the Hartree-Fock equations is the treatment of the exchange term, it would be very desirable to simplify the treatment of these terms by using Slater's average of the exchange potential. The first order correction of energy in the lowest excited states of He atom is calculated by using the unperturbed wave function obtained with the Hartree-Fock-Slater approximation and compared with the result obtained by the simple analytical method. The numerical results agrees with an experimental results for the lowest excited states of He atom with tolerance 3.22%, 2.16%, 2.94% and 3.41%. These results show that the numerical analysis can be applied to other multielectron atoms with the personal computer.

        Numerical methods that are known as Monte as Monte Carlo methods can be loosely described as statistical simulation methods, where statistical simulation is defined in quite general terms to be any method that utilizes sequences of random numbers to perform the simulation. Monte Carlo methods are now used routinely in many problems, the simulation of the esoteric subnuclear processes in high energy physics experiments, cellular automata, self-organized critical phenomena, the Ising spin glass, the simulation of a Bingo game, etc. The physical processes are simulated directly, and there are no needs to even write down the differential equations that describe the behaviors of the systems. The only requirement is that the physical systems be described by probability density functions. We consider with the Monte Carlo variational method and the Monte Carlo path integral method(MCPI). These methods are used to calculate the energy of the ground states of H2 molecule by the formal similarity between the Schroedinger equation and the multi-dimensional diffusion equation.

      • Concurrent Autophagy Inhibition Overcomes the Resistance of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Tyrosine Kinase Inhibitors in Human Bladder Cancer Cells

        <P>Despite the potential therapeutic efficacy of epithelial growth factor receptor (EGFR) inhibitors in the treatment of advanced stage bladder cancer, there currently is no clear evidence to support this hypothesis. In this study, we investigate whether the concurrent treatment of autophagy-blocking agents with EGFR inhibitors exerts synergistic anti-cancer effects in T24 and J82 human bladder cancer cells. Lapatinib and gefitinib were used as EGFR inhibitors, and bafilomycin A1 (BFA1), chloroquine (CQ) and 3-methyladenine (3-MA) were used as the pharmacologic inhibitors of autophagy activities. To assess the proliferative and self-renewal capabilities, the Cell Counting Kit-8 (CCK-8) assay and a clonogenic assay were performed, respectively. To examine apoptotic cell death, flow cytometry using annexin-V/propidium iodide (PI) was used. To measure the autophagy activities, the expression levels of LC3I and II was determined by Western blot analysis. To validate the synergistic effects of autophagy inhibition with EGFR inhibitors, we specifically blocked key autophagy regulatory gene ATG12 by transfection of small interference RNA and examined the phenotypic changes. Of note, lapatinib and gefitinib triggered autophagy activities in T24 and J82 human bladder cancer cells, as indicated by upregulation of LC3II. More importantly, inhibiting autophagy activities with pharmacologic inhibitors (BFA1, CQ or 3-MA) remarkably reduced the cell viabilities and clonal proliferation of T24 and J82 cells, compared to those treated with either of the agents alone. We also obtained similar results of the enhanced anti-cancer effects of EGFR inhibitors by suppressing the expression of ATG12. Notably, the apoptotic assay showed that synergistic anti-cancer effects were induced via the increase of apoptotic cell death. In summary, concomitant inhibition of autophagy activities potentiated the anti-cancer effects of EGFR inhibitors in human bladder cancer cells, indicating a novel therapeutic strategy to treat advanced bladder cancer.</P>

      • Effect of pH on the Vascular Tone and $^{45}Ca$ Uptake in the Aorta of Spontaneously Hypertensive Rats

        The effect of extracellular and intracellular pH on vascular tone and $^{45}Ca$ uptake were investigated in aortic strips and dispersed single aortic smooth muscle cells of spontaneously hypertensive rats (SHR) and aged-matched Wistar-Kyoto rats (WKY). The contraction produced by a change of extracellular pH (pHo) in the range of $6.5{\sim}8.3$ was estimated by comparison with the level of vascular tone at pH 7.4. Contraction was induced below pHo 6.5 in WKY, pHo 7.1 in SHR, and over pHo 8.0 on both strains. The amplitude of contraction induced by high pHo (over pHo 7.7) was similar in SHR and WKY, but that induced by low pHo (below pHo 7.1) in SHR was greater than that in WKY. Either high pHo- or low pHo-induced contractions in WKY and SHR were not induced in the Ca-free Tyrode's solution and were induced by the addition of Ca. $^{45}Ca$ uptake increased progressively as pHo was increased from 6.8 to 8.1 in the single aortic smooth muscle cells of WKY and SHR. $NH_4Cl$ induced a gradually developing contraction in a dose-dependent manner $(5\;mM{\sim}30\;mM)$ and the removal of $NH_4Cl$ induced transient contraction was followed by profound relaxation in the aortic rings of both strains. The contractions induced by $NH_4Cl$ or by the removal of $NH_4Cl$ in SHR were significantly greater than that in WKY. These contractions were not induced in Ca-free Tyrode's solution. $^{45}Ca$ uptake was increased by $NH_4Cl$ (20 mM) and was not changed by the removal of $NH_4Cl$ (20 mM) in the aortic strips of WKY and SHR. As a summary of above results, the vascular tone of SHR was more sensitive to the change pHi and pHo than that of WKY. The contractions induced by change of extracellular or intracellular pH depended on extracellular Ca in the aorta of SHR nnd WKY. However, the Ca uptake was in accord with the changes of contraction but increase in contraction by low pH was not accompanied by an increase in Ca uptake in both strains.
