        The associations between dietary practices and dietary quality, biological health indicators, perceived stress, religiosity, culture, and gender in multicultural Singapore

        Background: Dietary quality, biological health, culture, religiosity, and perceived stress are co-related. However, there is a dearth of research conducted on Asian populations in secularized and harmonious multicultural societies. Methods: This study addresses these gaps by conducting an investigation in the multicultural and multireligious Singapore to examine the parameters of culture and gender and the associations with (1) dietary quality, (2) biological health indicators, (3) religiosity, and (4) perceived stress. One hundred fifty participants (18e60 years old) were recruited, and their blood pressure (BP), body mass index (BMI), and body fat percentage (BF%) were also measured along with a 5-part questionnaire on demographics, dietary practice, food frequency, religiosity, and perceived stress. Results and conclusion: Results showed that cultural differences are associated with certain dietary practices, where the three ethnic groups of Chinese, Malays, and Indians significantly differed in their choices of meal locations such as Western fast food restaurants (H ¼ 12.369, p ¼ .002061*). Our analysis revealed that perceived stress significantly correlated with fat intake (rs ¼ .169, N ¼ 150, p ¼ .03865) and sugar intake (rs ¼ .172, N ¼ 150, p ¼ .03575). On the other hand, biological parameters such as diastolic BP (rs ¼ .0473, N ¼ 150, p ¼ .565), systolic BP (rs¼ .00972, N ¼ 150, p ¼ .906), BMI (rs ¼ .0403, N ¼ 150, p ¼ .6246), and BF% (rs ¼ .110, N ¼ 150, p ¼ .1811) did not have significant correlations with perceived stress. Similarly, religiosity did not significantly correlate with perceived stress (rs ¼ .025, N ¼ 150, p ¼ .7616). In conclusion, our findings provide insights into the changing intersection of food practices mitigated by ethnicity, religiosity, stress, and gender in the harmonious multiracial and multicultural Singapore.

        Causal Relations between Exposome and Stroke: A Mendelian Randomization Study

        Background and Purpose To explore the causal relationships of elements of the exposome with ischemic stroke and its subtypes at the omics level and to provide evidence for stroke prevention. Methods We conducted a Mendelian randomization study between exposure and any ischemic stroke (AIS) and its subtypes (large-artery atherosclerotic disease [LAD], cardioembolic stroke [CE], and small vessel disease [SVD]). The exposure dataset was the UK Biobank involving 361,194 subjects, and the outcome dataset was the MEGASTROKE consortium including 52,000 participants. Results We found that higher blood pressure (BP) (systolic BP: odds ratio [OR], 1.02; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.01 to 1.04; diastolic BP: OR, 1.03; 95% CI, 1.01 to 1.05; pulse pressure: OR, 1.03; 95% CI, 1.00 to 1.06), atrial fibrillation (OR, 1.18; 95% CI, 1.13 to 1.25), and diabetes (OR, 1.13; 95% CI, 1.07 to 1.18) were significantly associated with ischemic stroke. Importantly, higher education (OR, 0.69; 95% CI, 0.60 to 0.79) decreased the risk of ischemic stroke. Higher systolic BP (OR, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.10), pulse pressure (OR, 1.08; 95% CI, 1.02 to 1.14), diabetes (OR, 1.28; 95% CI, 1.13 to 1.45), and coronary artery disease (OR, 1.58; 95% CI, 1.25 to 2.00) could cause LAD. Atrial fibrillation could cause CE (OR, 1.90; 95% CI, 1.71 to 2.11). For SVD, higher systolic BP (OR, 1.04; 95% CI, 1.00 to 1.07), diastolic BP (OR, 1.06; 95% CI, 1.01 to 1.12), and diabetes (OR, 1.22; 95% CI, 1.10 to 1.36) were causal factors. Conclusions The study revealed elements of the exposome causally linked to ischemic stroke and its subtypes, including conventional causal risk factors and novel protective factors such as higher education.

        Intelligent identification of mortar void in ballastless slab track using the wheelset acceleration combined with CNN-SVM

        Mortar void is a hidden defect in ballastless slab track difficult to be efficiently identified by traditional detection methods. This paper is dedicated to proposing a new detection method to identify the mortar void position and length using the vehicle response combined with the hybrid convolutional neural network-support vector machine (CNN-SVM) classifier. The vertical wheelset accelerations with different mortar void conditions are collected from a vehicle-track coupled dynamics simulation model. The first components decomposed from wheelset accelerations by local mean decomposition and their envelopes are utilized as the training data due to their sensitivity to mortar void. To improve the identification precision, the scope descent method is proposed to determine the range influenced by mortar void (IMVR) and samples are labeled according to IMVR. Meanwhile, identification results are post processed based on the mortar void characteristics. The results show that over 90 % mortar void conditions with the length of 0.65 m are detected correctly and the identification has a higher precision with the mortar void length greater than 0.95 m. The proposed technology of mortar void detection using the wheelset accelerations with the hybrid CNN-SVM classifier provides reference for engineering application, which is of great significance to relieve the pressure of health monitoring of railway track.

        Modeling of low viscosity oil-water annular flow in horizontal and slightly inclined pipes: Experiments and CFD simulations

        To characterize the effect of pipe inclination, low viscosity, flow rate and inlet water cut on annular flow pattern, a low viscosity oil-water two-phase annular flow in horizontal and slightly inclined (+1o, +3o and +5o) pipes with diameter of 20 mm has been experimentally investigated. A modified VOF model based on the CFD software package FLUENT was used to predict the in-situ oil fraction and pressure drop. The experimental data indicate that annular flow appears at a medium-high water cut. The slip ratio increases with flow rate increase but decreases with increasing water cut. The changes are more significant as the degree of inclination increases. Pressure drop is strongly dependent on flow rate, as it increases rapidly as inlet flow rate increase. Good agreement between the experimental data and calculated results of slip ratio and pressure drop was obtained.

        The Comparative Analysis of 3D Software Virtual and Actual Wedding Dress

        This study is intended to compare an actual wedding dress being made completely through 3D software, and compare it with an actual dress of a real model by using collective tools for comparative analysis. The method of the study was conducted via a literature review along with the production of the dresses. In the production, two wedding dresses for the small wedding ceremony were designed. Each of the design was made into both 3D and an actual garment. The results are as follows. First, the 3D whole body scanner reflects the measure of the exact human body size, however there were some difficulties in matching what the customer wanted, because the difference of the skin color and the hair style. Second, the pattern of the dress is much more easily altered than it was in the real production. Third, the silhouette of the virtual and the actual person with the dress was nearly the same. Fourth, textile tool was much more convenient because of the use of real-time rendering on the virtual dresses. Lastly, the lace and biz decoration were flat, and the luster was duller than in reality. Prospectively, the consumer will decide their own design of variety through the use of the avatar without wearing the actual dresses, and they would demand what the another one desired, different from the presented ones by making the corrections by themselves. Through this process, the consumer would be actively participating in the design, a step which would finally lead to the two way designing rather than the one way design of present times.

        Albumin-to-Fibrinogen Ratio as an Independent Prognostic Parameter in Untreated Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia: A Retrospective Study of 191 Cases

        Purpose Chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) is one of the most frequent type of B-cell chronic lymphoproliferative disorders and chronic inflammation takes part in the development of CLL. However, there has been no valid immune biomarker to predict the prognosis of untreated CLL patients. Materials and Methods In this retrospective study, we analyzed the clinical correlations and prognostic value of albumin-to-fibrinogen ratio (AFR) detected at diagnosis in 191 CLL patients. Results The cut-off value of AFR was 9.7 calculated by X-tile. Patients who were more than 65 years old were often accompanied by low level of AFR (p < 0.001). Survival analysis showed that patients with low level of AFR had shorter overall survival (OS) than patients with high level of AFR (p < 0.001). Multivariate analysis illustrated that AFR had a negative impact on OS (p=0.003) and was independent of parameters involved in CLL international prognostic index and other prognostic markers such as CD38 and ZAP-70. Conclusion These data provide a comprehensive view of AFR and shows that AFR at diagnosis is an adverse prognostic factor in untreated CLL patients.

      • FA/Mel@ZnO nanoparticles as drug self-delivery systems for RPE protection against oxidative stress

        Drug self-delivery systems can easily realize combination drug therapy and avoid carrier-induced toxicity and immunogenicity because they do not need non-therapeutic carrier materials. So, designing appropriate drug self-delivery systems for specific diseases can settle most of the problems existing in traditional drug delivery systems. Retinal pigment epithelium is very important for the homeostasis of retina. However, it is vulnerable to oxidative damage and difficult to repair. Worse still, the antioxidants can hardly reach the retina by non-invasive administration routes due to the ocular barriers. Herein, the targeted group (folic acid) and antioxidant (melatonin) have been grafted on the surface of ZnO quantum dots to fabricate a new kind of drug self-delivery systems as a protectant via eyedrops. In this study, the negative nanoparticles with size ranging in 4~6 nm were successfully synthesized. They could easily and precisely deliver drugs to retinal pigment epithelium via eyedrops. And they realized acid degradation to controlled release of melatonin and zinc in retinal pigment epithelium cells. Consequently, the structure of retinal pigment epithelium cells were stabilized according to the expression of ZO-1 and β-catenin. Moreover, the antioxidant capacity of retinal pigment epithelium were enhanced both in health mice and photic injury mice. Therefore, such new drug self-delivery systems have great potential both in prevention and treatment of oxidative damage induced retinal diseases.

        A novel bio-inspired approach with multi-resolution mapping for the path planning of multi-robot system in complex environments

        For multi-robot systems (MRSs), conventional path planning with single resolution mapping is challenging to balance information and computation. Regarding path planning of MRS, the previous research lacked systematic definition, quantitative evaluation, and the consideration of complex environmental factors. In this paper, a new systematic formulation is proposed to redefine the multi-robot path planning problem in complex environments, and evaluate the related solutions of this problem. To solve this problem, a novel bio-inspired approach based on reaction-diffusion system is given to deal with the path planning of MRS in complex environments, such as electromagnetic interference, ocean currents, and so on. Furthermore, a multi-layer neural dynamic network is proposed to describe environments with multiple resolutions, which can improve time performance while ensuring the integrity of environmental information. Comparative experimental results indicate that the proposed approach shows the excellent path planning performance of MRS in complex environments. The stability of the proposed method is determined by the mathematical basis.
