        Many studies revealed the neuroprotective, cardioprotective, and chemopreventive actions of dietary flavonoids. The plausible mechanistic interpretation of the various effects of flavonoids was concentrated on the anti-oxidant or free radical-scavenging properties of these phytochernicals, both in model systems and under in vivo conditions. While there has been a major focus on the anti-oxidant properties. there is an emerging view that flavonoids and their in vivo metabolites. do not act as conventional hydrogen-donating anti-oxidants. but they may exert regulatory functions in cells through actions at protein kinase or lipid kinase signaling pathways. Flavonoids and more recently their metabolites. have been reported to act at phosphoinositide 3-kinase(PI 3-kinase). Akt/protein kinase B(Akt/PKB), protein kinase C (PKC), mitogen activated protein kinase(MAP kinase), and various tyrosine kinases signaling cascades. Inhibitory or stimulatory actions at these pathways are likely to affect cellular function profoundly by altering the phosphorylation state of target molecules and by modulating gene expression. A clear understanding of the mechanisms of action of flavonoids, either as anti-oxidants or modulators of cellular signaling pathways, and the influence of their metabolism on these properties are key to the evaluation of these potent biomolecules as anti-cancer agents, cardio-protectants, and inhibitors of neurodegeneration.

        교잡종 찰옥수수에 대한 연구 : Ⅱ. 새로 육성된 찰옥수수 교잡종 "대덕찰"에 대한 농업적 특성 Ⅱ. Agronomic Characteristics of the New Waxy Hybrids "Daedukchals"

        1. 새로 육성된 4개의 대덕찰 찰옥수수 교잡종에 대한 간장은 대조구인 찰옥 1호보다 큰 반면에 개화기는 약 4∼7일 늦었으며, 모든 공시 교잡종의 주당 분얼수는 한 개이하의 무효분얼로 나타났다. 2. 새로 육성된 대덕찰옥수수의 이삭길이와 직경은 대조구인 찰옥 1호보다 크게 나타났으며, 특히 대덕찰옥수수 1호와 2호의 과피두께는 대구조보다 얇았고, 당도 역시 높게 나타나 우수 교잡종으로 평가되었다. Stem height of the new developed "Daedekchals" waxy hybrids were higher than check hybrid. Chalok #1, while days to tasseling were delayed about four to seven days. Number of tillers per plant of the these new hybrids including check were appeared to be one less as non-effective tiller. Ear length and diameter of the new waxy hybrids were longer and thicker than check, respectively. In addition pericarp thickness of the Daedekchal #1 and #2 among new developed waxy hybrids were thinner and sugar content were higher than check.

        교잡종 찰옥수수에 대한 연구 : Ⅰ. 찰옥수수 "연농×재래" 교잡종의 생육 및 수량특성 Ⅰ. Growth and Yield Characteristics in Waxy Maize Hybrid Yeonnong × Jaerae

        재래종 찰옥수수 F₁ 교잡종에 대한 생육 및 수량비교를 위해 충남대학교 농과대학 실험포장에서 육성한 이들 교잡종의 식물학적 특성에 대한 연구 결과는 다음과 같다. 1. 간장은 대조구에 비해 대학찰×재래찰, FR805/1K₃×고령찰이 가장 크게 나타났으나, FR805/1K₃×대학찰, 찰옥 1호에서 대조구와 비슷하게 나타내었다. 2. 착수수는 간장에서와 마찬가지로 대학찰×재래찰, FR805/1K₃×고령찰이 대조구보다 높게 나타났으나 대학찰×재래찰, 찰옥 1호는 비슷하였다. 3. 분얼수는 각 교잡종들간에 큰 차이가 없었다. 4. 이삭의 길이는 대조구에 비해 교잡종들이 거의 2배이상의 크기를 나타내었다. 5. 이삭직경은 FR805/1K₃× 고령찰의 교잡종을 제외하고 대조구와 비슷하게 나타났다. 6. 이삭열수는 Daehakchal×1K₁/LE만이 대조구와 유의성을 나타내고 기타 교잡종은 대조구와 비슷하였다. In order to evaluate the characteristics of growth and yield in F_(1) waxy hybrids using Korean local maize lines, six hybrids including check, Chalok # 1, were planted at the experinental field of e Chungnam National University. Stem and ear heights of Yeonnong × Jaerae and FR805/IK_(3) × Koryong hybrids were higher than the check hybrid. Number of fillers per plant in all hybrids were similar as 0.3 to 0.5 per plant Ear length of waxy hybrids was longer than 15㎝ of check hybrid and ear diameter was also thicker than check except FR805/IK_(3) × Koryong waxy hybrid. A final result, Yeonnong × Jaerae among hybrids was comparatively superior to other hybrids in the test.

        제1형 Trichorhinophalangeal 증후군

        Trichorhinophalangeal syndrome(TRPS) typeⅠis characterized by sparse and slow-growing hairs, pear-shaped nose, elongated philtrum, thin upper lip, and bone deformities, especially, cone-shaped epiphyses of the phalanges. The syndrome is inherited in an autosomal dominant manner. We report a case of TRPS typeⅠ with alopecia like male pattern baldness and Perthes-like changes on the right hip joint.         Robert Owen's Village of Unity and Mutual Co-operation and Charles Fourier's Phalanstere, which were the representative ideas for city-planning since the Industrial Revolution, were oriented for the changes in the economy, society and culture during their times. They were designated to overcome issues such as the destruction of the past order which resulted from newly-introduced economic systems, environmental problems caused by the cityward tendency of the population, and problems resulted from the subordinate relationship between capital and labor. They were theoretically based on the ideal of Socialism. As a planning philosophy for the ideal city, they proposed to supplement the distorted industrial structure of a city with a self-sufficient policy consisting of agriculture and small-sized manual industries. For this purpose, the whole city should be considered as one community in production and consumption. With regard to the overall arrangement model, buildings were supposed to be placed in the symmetric frame, whose model can be called centralization pattern. The public facilities were located in the center and were surrounded with the dwelling complexes appearing as a type of collective residence. Technologically, Owen used a central heating system and Fourier experimented with a glass roof, which was regarded as a new technology at that time. Their utopian proposals based on ideal socialism were quite aggressive and imaginary, thus they did not come true. Nevertheless, they have played a role as a sample (or model) of city-planning, so far due to the idea of the association of city and rural town, the residence patterns of laborers, and also the management of a cooperative. In reality, Robert Owen's Village of Unity and Mutual Co-operation had an influence on E. Howard's Garden City and New Town of England, and Charles Fourier's Phalanstere had an effect of Tony Garnier's La Cite' Industrielle and Le Corbusier. Moreover, their collective residence pattern has been expected to be one of the most positive models of the modern new city.

      • 전도성 충전물을 이용한 도전성 판재의 제조기술 개발

        As an effort of developing efficient materials for shielding EM waves, a fibrous sheet for shielding EMI is developed by adding conductive filler to fibrous sheet during hardening process. From the aspect that the conductivity is inversely proportional to the square value of the length of added material, the conductive filler is fabricated by electroless plating with nickel and copper to the polymer textile power which has very high anisotropy. The conducting sheet was also fabricated by applying proper amount of highly efficient conductive filler to the fibrous sheet. The results obtained by measuring the shielding characteristics of 1㎒∼1㎓ frequency range showed the EMI suppressing effectiveness of 10∼20 ㏈.

      • Si Bulk Micromachining을 위한 Wafer Rolling Etching 및 그 특성

        A wafer rolling etching system for the silicon bulk micromachining has been designed and fabricated. The silicon diaphragms were anisotropically etched in a 24.5 weight percent KOH solution. Compared to the conventional KOH etching systems, pyramidal hillocks, and wave-shaped structures on the etched surfaces were greatly reduced by using this system. After etching for time of 438 minutes, the average etched depth and the etch-rate were measured to be 537μm and 1.22μm/min, respectively. The average etching uniformity of etching depth was 0.87% in 5-inch wafer. Our results showed that the wafer rolling method enhanced etch uniformity and etch rate.

      • Bupivacaine과 ropivacaine이 Xenopus oocyte에 발현된 HERG 전류에 미치는 영향

        Bupivacaine is an amide-type local anesthetic widely used for regional anesthesia. Ropivacaine is developed as a less cardiotoxic alternatives to bupivacaine. In the present study, we have analyzed the effects of bupivacaine and ropivacaine on HERG currents expressed in Xenopus oocytes. Bupivacaine and ropivacaine(3∼1,000μM) blocked HERG currents in a concentration dependent manner. EC_(50) was 26.1±3.1μM(n_(R) 0.65±0.04) and 43.5±7.9μM(n_(H) 0.99±0.13) in bupivacaine and ropivacaine, respectively. Bupivacaine and ropivacaine did not affect the activation and deactivation kinetics of HERG channels. However, the drugs decreased the slope conductance measured from fully activated current-voltage relationship curves. These results suggest that bupivacaine and ropivacaine have a similarinhibitory effect on HERG channels, which could be a possible cellular mechanism of LQT or ventricular arrythmia by the drugs.

        Cyclosporin에 의한 치은증식증의 치험 2례

        Cyclosporin is a relatively new immunosuppressive agent which has been used to prevent organ transplant rejection, to treat type-I diabetes mellitus and several other autoimmune disorders. It is anticipated that the therapeutic use of cyclosporin will increase progressively in the future to treat numerous other disorders. As its clinical use broadens, it will needed for health professionals to be familiar with the beneficial effects as well as some of the undesirable side effects of cyclosporin therapy. A side effect of this drug in dentistry appears to be pronounced gingival hyperplasia. Cyclosporin induced gingival hyperplasia is indistinguishable from gingival hyperplasia induced by phenytoin and nifedipine in clinical and histopathologic finding. We experienced two cases of gingival hyperplasia secondary to cyclosporin therapy in patients, 48-year old & 28-year old females who received a kidney allograft transplant. Clinical examinations revealed a severely overgrown and inflammed gingiva. Surgical excision of the excess tissue was accomplished under local anesthesia. On follow-up check, gingival hyperplasia in a 48-year old patient whose oral hygiene was very poor showed successive recurrence after three times surgical excision, another patient who could control oral hygiene thoroughly showed good healing. Conclusively, it seems to be very important to control oral hygiene thoroughly to decrease occurrence and recurrence of cyclosporin-induced gingival hyperplasia.

        양성 백악아세포종의 치험례

        Benign cementoblastoma is uncommon odontogenic tumor of the jaw of mesenchymal origin. It is common in male below 25 years of age, commonly occurs in mandibular molar and premolar area. Principal symptom is painless swelling. Radiologically, radiopaque mass is fused with a root or roots of teeth, surrounded, and limited peripherally by a radiolucent halo. Histologically, the tumor is composed of sheets of an osteocementum like material with basophilic reversal line. Because of unlimited growth potential, the usual treatment is complete surgical excision with extraction of the associated teeth. The patient, 16-year old male, was admitted to our hospital with chief complaint of painless swelling on right mandible body area. Surgical excision of lesion and extraction of associated tooth was performed. On follow up check, we obtained good result without any signs of recurrence of the lesion.
