Purpose and Hypotheses The purpose of the present study is to assess the effects of early childhood education program administered by the Sookmyung Nursery School on the intellectual development of preschool children. The nursery program is a play-centered curriculum consisted of social studies, language, mathmatics, science, health, and creative arts. The Hypotheses to be tested in this study were as follows: Hypotheses Ⅰ. The Program significantly enhances the global intelligence of preschool children. Hypotheses Ⅱ. The program significantly enhances the perceptual discrimination ability, concept formation ability, verbal ability, and reasoning ability of preschool children. Methods Research design of the present study was the pretest-posttest control group design. The duration of the experiment was about 6 months. The subjects of this study were 70 young children aged 3 to 5 living in Seoul area. More specifically stated, 42 children comprise the experimental group and 28 children the control group. At the outset, it was found that there were no significant differences between two groups in such variables as age, sex socio-economic status of the family, and IQ scores obtained from the pretest. The instrument used for the present study was Inteligence Test for Preschool Children constructed by the Korean Institute for Research in the Behavioral Sciences. Analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was applied for analyzing the data collected through pretests and posttests. Results The results of the present study are as follows: 1. The Results of covariance analysis on the intelligence increment of the two groups. ◁표 삽입▷(원문을 참조하세요) According to the above results, Hypothesis I was sustained at 1% level of significance, and Hypothesis Ⅱ was partially accepted. On the results of the present study, it was confirmed that the early childhood program conducted by Sookmyung Nursery was effective on the development of preschool children's intellignece. On the other hand, the results suggest that the program need to be enriched in the aspect of language training.
