A 9-year old female Shih Tzu dog was presented to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University with a history of chronic intermittent anorexia and vomiting of 4-year duration. She visited 3 years ago with the same clinical signs but has not been treated regularly due to waxing-waning course. On the physical examination, no specific findings were found. CBC, serum chemistry, radiography, ACTH stimulation test, evaluation of serum T4 and TSH concentration were performed. Hypoadrenocorticism was diagnosed with the ACTH stimulation test. And then, secondary hypoadrenocorticism was diagnosed with ACTH stimulation test, pre-ACTH aldosterone concentration, endogenous ACTH concentration. As electrolyte concentrations were normal, glucocorticoid (0.15mg/kg bid PO) alone was administered. She has recovered from the clinical signs and has been doing well. It is suggested that the differentiation of secondary hypoadrenocorticism from primary hypoadrenocorticism is important as the secondary hypoadrenocorticism occurs rarely and the symptoms are non-specific with normal electrolyte concentrations.

A 12-year old neutered male Yorkshire terrier dog was presented to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University with a history of chronic intermittent diarrhea, vomiting, anorexia and weight loss of 2- months duration. On presentation, he was very cachexic and had ascites. Abnormal findings on a complete blood count and chemistry profile included mild anemia, leukocytosis, panhypoproteinemia, hypocholesterolemia, decreased blood urea nitrogen (BUN) and increased serum bile acids. Radiographic findings indicated microhepatica. Peritoneal fluid analysis was consistent with transudates (total protein2.5 g/dl, total nucleated cell count = 2,200/µl) and cytologic examination of the fluid revealed neoplastic lymphoblasts. From these findings hepatic dysfunction and protein-losing enteropathy were attributable to abdominal lymphoma. This case suggests that cytologic examination is important in diagnosing underlying diseases of ascites, even if it is transudative effusion.

The canine thyroglobulin autoantibody assay is to be usin dogs. Antithyroglobulin antibodies are present in about 50 percent of hypothyroid dogs. In this report, the seraof the five canine patients (P1~P5) refered to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital in Seoul National Universitywere assesed by T4, TSH and thyroglobulin autoantibody (TgA). P1 was diagnosed as severe hypothyroidism sincehe showed very high TSH levels with low T4 values. P2 and P3 born with a genetic predisposition were assesedas normal in thyroid function. P4 was normal, but needed follow-up examination for TgA assay. P5 showed thepositive result in TgAA assay, so it was diagnosed as autoimmune thyroiditis. As the cases above show, not onlyT4 and TSH, but also TgAA assay to be considered for more accurate assessment of the status of the thyroid.

A retrospective study was performed with 9 cases of spontaneous canine hypoadrenocorticism presented to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University. The disease occurred mostly in young to middle-aged dogs. Most dogs had chronic nonspecific signs such as episodic anorexia, lethargy and vomiting, but 3 dogs were brought to the hospital with an acute adrenal crisis. Serum biochemical analysis revealed azotemia, abnormal concentration of sodium, potassium, and chloride in almost all the patients. Diagnoses were made based on lack of adrenocortical response to exogenous adrenocorticotropic hormone(ACTH). Most dogs have been responded well with mineralocorticoid and glucocorticoid replacement except for a dog which died during treatment for adrenal crisis. Three dogs treated with fludrocortisone acetate(final median dosage, 31.0mg/kg/day) for mineralocorticoid supplementation showed some adverse effects, such as excessive appetite and polyuria/polydipsia. In this study, it was suggested that clinicians should also consider hypoadrenocorticism when they diagnose a patient showing nonspecific gastrointestinal signs with unknown cause or laboratory findings which mimic primary renal diseases.

A 9-year-old male Yorkshire terrior with recurrent chronic otitis externa and otitis interna was referred to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Seoul National University. Radiographic findings indicated mineralization around the right ear canal. A tan nodular mass, 1cm in diameter, was noted near the tympanum after total ear canal ablation. Cytologically, the imprint smear of the cut surface of the mass produced clusters of cells with abundant and weakly basophilic cytoplasm, one small round nucleus and one or two nucleoli, mixed with both degenerate and non degenerate neutrophils. The location of the nuclei was eccentric, and some cells contained somewhat coarse black granules in their cytoplasms, on which the mass was diagnosed as ceruminous gland adenoma or hyperplasia associated with inflammation. Histopathologic examination of the tumor was compatible with a diagnosis of ceruminous gland adenoma. The patient is responding well to sugery and antimicrobial treatment.
