Induction of erythroleukaemia by F - MuLV and Purification of Erythropoietin

Friend Murine Leukemia Virus (F-MuLV) is affective against 2-day old new borns in NFS/n Swiss mice. Infected babies suffer from splenomegaly and anemia at the age of 4-5 weeks beyond which the condition worsens and is fatal. However, the spleen size can be reduced by hypertransfusion for 8 weeks. If left alone after this treatment, the spleen enlarges and becomes palpable again. This time the spleen cells are transplantable and inflict the same disease if injected to normal adults. While these leukemic cells were considered to be hormone-independent, addition of erythropoietin (EPO) was found to be essential for maximum growth in culture. Influence of EPO on the in vivo growth of leukemic cells was indicated by our findings that administration of the hormone caused a more severe leukemia and rapid death while, transfusion of red blood cells, which lowers endogenous EPO, led to increased survival of leukemic mice. It is suggested that hormone-associated therapy may be efficacious in the treatment of this and perhaps, other leukemias. Several erythroleukemic cell lines released factors which stimulated erythropoiesis in vivo and in vitro. A simple five step scheme has been devised which allows purification of this erythropoietic activity to apparent homogeneity. The methods employed included lectin affinity chromatography (wheat germ agglutinin), gel filteration (ultro gel ACA 44), ion exchange, hydroxylapatite, and high performance liquid chromatography, Following polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, biological activity was recovered in an area corresponding to a molecular weight of 35,000 daltons. Silver staining of a polyacrylamide gel after electrophoresis of our most purified preparation revealed a single band of 35,000 daltons.

한반도 장님노린재과의 미기록속 Neomegacoelum 속을 처음으로 확인하고 Neomegacoelum vitreum (Kerzhner, 1988)의 한반도 분포를 보고한다. 성충과 생식기의 사진 등의 형태학적 정보와 생태학적 정보가 함께 제공된다. A monotypic genus, Neomegacoelum Yasunaga (Hemiptera: Heteroptera: Miridae: Mirinae), is reported from the Korean Peninsula for the first time with a species of Neomegacoelum vitreum (Kerzhner, 1988). The morphological information such as description and diagnoses are provided with the photographs of adult specimen and genitalia.

Background: This study was conducted to assess health risks in regard to exposure by children to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in children's products. Methods: Ten VOCs were measured by head-space gas chromatography in children's products, including toys, oil pastels, sign pens, furniture, ball pools, and playmats. We estimated the average daily dose (ADD) via inhalation during the use of these children's products and calculated hazard quotient (HQ) by dividing ADD by reference dose of VOCs. Results: Among the measured VOCs, five compounds were identified in children's products: benzene, ethylbenzene, styrene, toluene, and xylene. The detection rates of VOCs in toys, ball pools, furniture, playmats, sign pens, and oil pastels were 85%, 100%, 100%, 30%, 100%, and 60%, respectively. The maximum levels of VOCs were 0.18 mg benzene/kg in toys, 5.92 mg toluene/kg in playmats, 10.37 mg ethylbenzene/kg in ball pools, 24.85 mg xylene/kg in toys, and 118.29 mg styrene/kg in ball pools. From exposure levels of VOCs in the children's products HQs were calculated within a range of $5.71{\times}10^{-10}$ to $4.77{\times}10^{-4}$. The HQ of xylene was the highest for children aged 0-6 playing on the playmats. However, the HQ via inhalation exposure to VOCs in individual products did not exceed 1.00. Conclusion: Based on the results, it was concluded that the use of these children's products do not pose health risks to children.

과립세포종은 연부조직에 단발성 또는 다발성으로 생기는 드문 종양이다. 지금까지 두경부, 흉벽을 비롯한 신체 여러 부위에서 발생한 예가 보고되었지만 요도 주변에 생긴 경우는 아직 보고된 바가 없다. 이에 저자들은 요도 주변에 생긴 과립세포종 1예를 보고한다. Granular cell tumors are uncommon soft tissue tumors which arise as solitary or multiple masses. Lesions commonly arise in the head, neck, and chest wall, but can occur in any part of the body. To our knowledge, periurethral granular cell tumor has not been proeviously reported. We report on such case.
Two new records of the family Reduviidae (Hemiptera: Heteroptera) from the Korean Peninsula

Two species, Empicoris rubromaculatus (Blackburn, 1889) and Polytoxus armillatus Ishikawa, 1998, are firstreported from the Korean Peninsula. Diagnoses and descriptions of genitalia of both species are providedwith illustrations.
안전기준 비교분석연구: 한국과 일본의 제품안전 확보체계를 중심으로

최근 우리나라는 제품 안전사고에 대한 종합적 관리를 위하여 제품안전기본법을 도입하였다. 이는 제조자에 대한 제품제조 책임을 강화하여 소비자보호는 물론 제품안전을 확보하기 위한 정부정책이다. 그러나 우리나라의 제품안전 확보체계는 아직 완전하지 않다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 한국과 일본에 적용되고 있는 제품안전 확보체계에 대한 비교를 통해 우리나라의 제품안전 확보체계의 개선과제 및 발전방향에 대하여 제시하였다.
