The effects of complex Korean medicine treatment including acupotomy, on irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are reported in this case study. A 54-year-old woman with diarrheal symptoms that alternatively improved and worsened for many years and worsening abdominal pain visited the emergency room and was diagnosed with IBS; she was admitted for approximately 2 weeks at the Acupuncture and Moxibustion Department of National Medical Center (NMC). Numerical rating scale (NRS), irritable bowel syndrome–quality of life (IBS-QOL), and gastrointestinal symptom rating scale (GSRS) scores were evaluated on the day of hospitalization, midway through the hospitalization period, and on the day of discharge. Abdominal pain was measured daily using NRS, and the score decreased from 8 at admission to 0 at discharge. The IBS-QOL percentile score improved from 42 points to 100 points. The total GSRS score also improved, from 30 points to 2 points. These results suggest that complex Korean medicine treatment with acupotomy, is useful for treating internal diseases, such as IBS, as well as musculoskeletal disorders.

Xerostomia is a symptom of subjective complaints due to decreased salivary secretion or various other causes, which is common in about 30% of elderly people. Parasympathetic stimulants or artificial saliva are used as remedies, but this has side effects, and there are limitations in completely resolving symptoms. In this study, an 88-year-old woman with subjective dry mouth syndrome for the previous two to three years was treated with spinal pharmacopuncture and herbal medicine (Yookmigihwang-tang). The patient received pharmacopuncture at the thoracic 3rd, 6th, and 10th level twice a day and took herbal medicine three times daily for seven days. Both the degree of oral dryness and behavior were improved after treatment of Korean medicine, especially in the case of pharmacopuncture for inner core muscles.

Rhabdomyolysis is a syndrome that evokes either myopathy or cola-colored urine with elevated creatine kinase and myoglobin levels. The most common complication of rhabdomyolysis is acute renal failure (ARF). A large quantity of fluid must be injected promptly the first time symptoms appear, whereas sequela of symptoms has remained in the long run. In this report, a 58-year-woman was diagnosed with ARF due to rhabdomyolysis induced by exercise, alcohol, and medication. A treatment of acupuncture and herbal medicines was carried out for over 2 months. To evaluate the condition of the patient’s lower limb, a short form of the McGill Pain Questionnaire, Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), European Quality of Life–5 Dimensions (EQ-5D), and Manual Muscle Test (MMT) points were used. As a result, clinical symptoms and quality of life improved noticeably after treatment with Korean medicine. This suggests that Korean medicine has an effect on rhabdomyolysis.

Traumatic brain injury, which can be caused by head trauma, can damage the brain, resulting in physical disorders, such as headache, dizziness, and nausea, as well as mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, memory loss, and personality changes that reduce a person’s quality of life. Therefore, it is important to administer the best treatment at the right time. A 57-year-old patient complained of headache and depression after intracranical hemorrhage caused by a traffic accident. These symptoms are considered to be after effects of brain trauma due to increased pressure on the brain. Herbal medicine was prescribed to release internal brain pressure and acupuncture was applied to ease frontal and occipital head muscle tension. Objective scales were conducted at baseline, and at one month, two months, and four months. It was observed that the degree of headache and depression improved after treatment. This study is meaningful in that it found that Korean medicine treatments help alleviate the after effects of traumatic brain injury.

This study was conducted to investigate whether treatment with Korean medicine might help to improve symptoms of patients diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome. A patient diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt Syndrome was hospitalized for 15 days from October 4, 2018 to October 18, 2018 and treated using Korean medicine (Sinbaro3 pharmacopuncture, acupuncture, electroacupuncture, and herbal medicine). Therapeutic effects were evaluated using the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS), House–Brackmann grade, Yanagihara’s score survey, and Digital Infrared Thermographic Imaging (DITI). After treatment, the Numerical Rating Scale score (6 at admission down to 2 points at discharge), House–Brackmann grade (Grade V down to Grade II), Yanagihara’s score (6.0 up to 22.0), and Digital Infrared Thermographic Imaging showed improvement from admission to discharge. Treatment with traditional Korean medicine, may help improve symptoms of Ramsay Hunt Syndrome such as facial nerve paralysis, neuralgia after paraplegia, hearing difficulties, and dizziness.
