남북전쟁 이전 흑인소설과 가정성의 국외 연구동향

        서주희 ( Seo Joohee ) 영미문학연구회 2020 안과 밖 Vol.0 No.49

This paper surveys recent studies in antebellum African American novels and theories on 19th century domesticity. Early canonization of 19th century American literature focused on novels written by white male writers. Particularly, in the 1950s, while establishing an American exceptionalist view of American culture, critics tried to invoke certain myths to define the American experience. White feminist critics of the late 1970s and 1980s have opposed to this male-dominant narrative that had been detached from specific socio-economic conditions of the literary sphere and reinstated the neglected works by white female writers into the literary canon. In this process, critical issues such as the problem of sympathetic identification in sentimental culture and the definition of woman and womanhood have come under scrutiny. In the recent scholarship, the notion of womanhood and domesticity have been reexamined, especially by black critical theory. In work done by Hortense Spillers, Hazel Carby, Ann duCille, Claudia Tate, and Robert Reid-Pharr, domesticity has been redefined by a process in which subjects are constructed by both race and gender. Domesticity, in the historical context of chattel slavery, was used to protect white genealogy and property rights while subjugating slaves marked by their raced corporeality. In this regard, literary representations of motherhood, womanhood, marriage, and family have had different political implications in African American novels. In particular, the African American novels written by William Wells Brown, Frank J. Webb, Martin Delany, and Harriet Wilson in the 1850s grapple with the literary representation of domesticity in relation to the question of slavery, black subjectivity, and the possibility of black citizenship.

제국의 중심에서 소비하는 여성들: 진 리스의 『어둠 속의 항해』

        서주희 ( Joohee Seo ) 한국현대영미소설학회 2021 현대영미소설 Vol.28 No.3

This paper examines how whiteness as the basis of English identity and femininity is formed and acquired through the consumption of commodity goods in Jean Rhys’s Voyage in the Dark. Critics have often noted the main protagonist Anna’s cultural and racial hybridity which is rooted in her being a colonial subject, a white creole woman, displaced in the imperial metropolis of London. However, the emphasis on hybridity runs the risk of glossing over the structured racial hierarchy of the colonial spaces such as Anna’s home in Dominica. This paper proposes to look into the ambivalence, rather than hybridity, of Anna’s marginal positionality as a white creole woman in order to underscore the ambivalence of white womanhood that defines the racial boundary of imperial Englishness. First, the paper focuses on the sexual commodification of Anna and her fellow chorus girls and how this commodification conditions their marginalization from domesticity and respectability of the English middle class. Then, I examine the ways in which the female characters of the novel try to appease the anxiety of class mobility through the consumption of commodities that are circulated through the imperial marketplace. Particularly, the goods that flow in from the colonies are transformed into fetishized goods that confirm and form the privileged whiteness which the precariously classed women aspire to achieve. The English domestic space accommodates the racial fetishization of such goods while negating the complex temporalities and histories of the colonies. In the last section, the paper then argues that the declassed state Anna experiences enables her to reread and reevaluate her Dominican past. Through Anna’s fragmented consciousness that weaves together the past and present, the colony and the metropolis, the novel presents a critique on the Empire and its racial/racist formation of identity.

허먼 멜빌의 「베니토 세리노」의 유럽중심주의 담론과 서사적 해체

        서주희(Joohee Seo) 19세기영어권문학회 2021 19세기 영어권 문학 Vol.25 No.1

This paper examines how Amasa Delano’s limited thought-process is represented in Herman Melville"s novella, “Benito Cereno,” and how the novella ultimately deconstructs Delano’s misleading insight on the San Dominick by focusing on the narrativity and textuality of the novel. In “Benito Cereno,” Delano’s process of unearthing the mysterious past of the San Dominick and its elusive captain, Benito Cereno, entails a constant reading of signs and stories. However, by the end of the first section, we as readers realize that Delano’s speculations and suspicions were miscalculated, if not entirely wrong. By representing Delano’s thought process and its limitations, I argue that the novella serves as Melville’s reflexive criticism on Eurocentric discourse and its racist implications. While the first half of the novel tracks Delano’s (mis)reading, informed by Eurocentric discourses of history and race, the second half of the novel subversively deconstructs the legitimization of Eurocentric power by inviting the reader to participate in refiguring the plot. Here, I take cue from Paul Ricoeur’s theory of narrativity that puts emphasis on the reader in relation to fictional narratives. As the plot departs from Delano’s point of view and ventures into the deposition of the mutiny trial, the reader can reread, undermine, and question Delano’s reading. This experience, in turn, subverts the progression of narrativity, and creates the possibility of a multilayered, non-linear temporality that can further question the progress of Eurocentric modernity.

Vol.35 No.1

Objectives: The purpose of this scoping review is to suggest future treatment and research directions for adult ADHD by examining domestic trends in Korean research on adults with ADHD tendencies. Methods: The present review used Arksey and O’Malley’s scoping review methodology. Eight domestic databases were used, and a search was conducted in July 2023 while targeting domestic papers that had been published within the last 20 years. Subject keywords included ‘College student’, ‘Soldier’, and ‘Adult’, and the subject-related terms that were searched for included ‘ADHD’. Results: From 502 initially collected articles, 78 were ultimately selected for analysis in this work. Domestic research related to adult ADHD has been steadily conducted since 2000, and most such research has been done in psychology. Regarding the research participants, those in their 20s were the most common age group, and college students accounted for more than half of participants. In terms of study design, survey studies were the most common, while there was a lack of studies on intervention. The subject most closely dealt with in ADHD studies was interpersonal relationships, followed by depression and addiction. The main intervention used in this study was cognitive behavioral therapy, however it was limited in number. Conclusions: More multifaceted studies on adult ADHD need to be conducted using various research methodologies, and there is also a need for more studies using interventions. It is also important for such research to be expanded to broader geographic areas, ages, and occupations.

Objectives: This study aims to develop an educational program based on a manual for disaster medical support using Korean medicine (KM) for disaster survivors. Methods: We conducted a literature review on another educational program, a focus group interviews with experts, a survey of the academic needs of Korean medicine (KM) doctors, educational competency development, and an expert Delphi survey. Results: This program was designed using a hybrid method combining online (4 h) and offline (8 h) elements; the total time of the program is 12 h. The offline course consists of theory (4 h) and practice (4 h) lectures. The theory lecture covers herbal medicine, acupuncture, stabilizing technique, emotional freedom technique, and self-management, and the practice lecture covers stabilizing technique, emotional freedom technique, and clinical performance evaluation. Meanwhile, the online course covers a manual for disaster medical support using KM and an introductory course from the National Center for Disaster and Trauma. Conclusions: The results of this study are expected to be useful for enhancing training for KM doctors in trauma care for disaster survivors as well as evaluating and validating the program’s effectiveness.
