Effects of Orbital Decompression on Lamina Cribrosa Depth in Patients with Graves’ Orbitopathy

Yuri Seo,Woo Beom Shin,Hyoung Won Bae,Jin Sook Yoon 대한안과학회 2019 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.33 No.5

Purpose: We sought to investigate the effects of Graves’ orbitopathy (GO) and orbital decompression on lamina cribrosa depth (LCD) using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography. Methods: Forty eyes that underwent orbital decompression to relieve compressive optic neuropathy or correct disfiguring exophthalmos in the context of GO were included. Subjects were imaged with spectral-domain optical coherence tomography before surgery and at 1 and 3 months after surgery, at which the examiner measured the LCD (distance from the anterior surface of the lamina cribrosa to the Bruch membrane opening line) and peripapillary retinal nerve fiber layer thickness. Subjects were divided into two groups-a muscle-dominant group composed of patients who had extraocular muscle enlargement on preoperative orbital computed tomography scan and a fat-dominant group composed of patients who did not show extraocular muscle enlargement on preoperative orbital computed tomography scan-and subgroup analysis was performed. Preoperative and postoperative intraocular pressure, exophthalmos, LCD, and retinal nerve fiber layer thickness were evaluated. Results: At baseline, LCD was remarkably shallower in the muscle-dominant group than in the fat-dominant group (95% confidence interval, p = 0.007). In the muscle-dominant group, LCD showed no definite change after surgery. However, the fat-dominant group showed temporary posterior displacement of the lamina cribrosa at 1-month postoperation that was reversed to baseline at 3 months postoperation (95% confidence interval, p < 0.01). Conclusions: The lamina cribrosa was anteriorly displaced preoperatively, and its position was nearly unchanged after the surgery, especially in association with extraocular muscle enlargement. An enlarged extraocular muscle could reduce the pressure-relieving effect of orbital decompression around the scleral canal in patients with GO.

The real-time data is updated through the communication protocol, based on the encrypted Blockchain, then is delivered to the interest group.

      • Flexible micro-scale UV-curable phosphor layers screen-printed on a polymer substrate for planar white light-emitting diodes

Woo Jang, Jin,Kim, Yuri,Hyeon Kwon, Oh,Soo Cho, Yong Elsevier 2018 Materials letters Vol.217 No.-

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Different types of the remote phosphor have been investigated to enhance the light-emitting performance with less time-dependent degradations of the emission properties. Here, two different remote phosphor approaches are introduced to optimize the effect of red phosphor in the yellow phosphor-driven white light-emitting diodes (LED)s. These approaches combining the printing technology with a UV-curing process are designed for flexible planar white LEDs with a thin layer thickness of a few tens of micrometer-scale. A screen-printing process was utilized to obtain the mixed or stacked phosphor layers based on commercial yellow and red phosphors. The phosphor particles were found to be dispersed uniformly in the cured UV-polymer matrix. The resultant luminescence characteristics depended on the type of remote phosphor and the relative content of red phosphor. The mixing approach was more effective in raising color rendering index (CRI) while minimizing the reduction of luminous efficacy. As a result, a luminous efficacy of ∼101 lm/W and a CRI of ∼83.1 were obtained for the mixed sample with 5 wt% red phosphor, which correspond to a decrease of ∼11.2% and an increase of ∼9.3% compared to the reference sample.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A printing technology of UV-curable phosphor composite layer is introduced. </LI> <LI> Manipulated luminescence characteristics are provided with the phosphor layer. </LI> <LI> Yellow and red phosphors were adjusted for mixing and stacking approaches. </LI> <LI> Only the 20–30 μm-thick phosphor layer was effective in enhancing color quality. </LI> <LI> With the same content of minor red phosphor, the effect of mixed layer was bigger. </LI> </UL> </P>

Correlation between Physical Activity and Lung Function in Dusty Areas: Results from the Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease in Dusty Areas (CODA) Cohort

( Yuri Han ),( Yeonjeong Heo ),( Yoonki Hong ),( Sung Ok Kwon ),( Woo Jin Kim ) 대한결핵 및 호흡기학회 2019 Tuberculosis and Respiratory Diseases Vol.82 No.4

Background: Although physical activity is known to be beneficial to lung function, few studies have been conducted to investigate the correlation between physical activity and lung function in dusty areas. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the correlation between physical activity and lung function in a Korean cohort including normal and COPD-diagnosed participants. Methods: Data obtained from the COPD in dusty areas (CODA) cohort was analyzed for the following factors: lung function, symptoms, and information about physical activity. Information on physical activity was valuated using questionnaires, and participants were categorized into two groups: active and inactive. The evaluation of the mean lung function, modified Medical Research Council dyspnea grade scores, and COPD assessment test scores was done based on the participant physical activity using a general linear model after adjusting for age, sex, smoking status, pack-years, height, and weight. In addition, a stratification analysis was performed based on the smoking status and COPD. Results: Physical activity had a correlation with high forced expiratory volume in 1 second (FEV1) among CODA cohort (p=0.03). While the active group exhibited significantly higher FEV1 compared to one exhibited by the inactive group among past smokers (p=0.02), no such correlation existed among current smokers. There was no significant difference observed in lung function after it was stratified by COPD. Conclusion: This study established a positive correlation between regular physical activity in dusty areas and lung function in participants.

Transarterial chemoembolization for hepatocellular carcinoma: 2023 Expert consensus-based practical recommendations of the Korean Liver Cancer Association

        Yuri Cho,Jin Woo Choi,Hoon Kwon,Kun Yung Kim,Byung Chan Lee,Hee Ho Chu,Dong Hyeon Lee,Han Ah Lee,Gyoung Min Kim,Jung Suk Oh,Dongho Hyun,In Joon Lee,Hyunchul Rhim 대한간학회 2023 Clinical and Molecular Hepatology(대한간학회지) Vol.29 No.3

Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) was introduced in 1977 with the administration of chemotherapeutic agent to gelatin sponge particles through the hepatic artery in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and was established as conventional TACE using Lipiodol in the 1980s. In the 2000s, drug-eluting beads were developed and applied clinically. Currently, TACE is a commonly used non-surgical treatment modality for patients with HCC who are unsuitable for curative treatment. Considering the vital role of TACE in the management of HCC, it is crucial to organize current knowledge and expert opinions regarding patient preparation, procedural techniques, and post-treatment care in TACE, which can enhance therapeutic efficacy and safety. A group of 12 experts in the fields of interventional radiology and hepatology, convened by the Research Committee of the Korean Liver Cancer Association (KLCA), has developed expert consensus-based practical recommendations in TACE. These recommendations have been endorsed by the Korean Society of Interventional Radiology and provide useful information and direction in performing TACE procedure as well as pre- and post- procedural patient care.

Changes in Blood Glucose Level After Steroid Injection for Musculoskeletal Pain in Patients With Diabetes

        Woo-Yong Shin,Min-Ji An,Nam-Gyu Im,Kyung-Rok Oh,Yuri Choe,Seo-Ra Yoon,Su-Ra Ryu 대한재활의학회 2020 Annals of Rehabilitation Medicine Vol.44 No.2

Objective To investigate changes in blood glucose level after steroid injection in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus (DM) and factors affecting those changes. Methods We retrospectively studied 51 patients with type 2 DM who underwent steroid injection for shoulder and back pain. Mean fasting blood sugar (FBS) levels for 7 days before steroid injection was used as the baseline blood glucose level, which was compared with FBS levels for 14 days after steroid injection. We compared the differences in blood glucose changes between HbA1c >7% and HbA1c ≤7% groups and those between insulin and non-insulin treated groups. Demographic data, injection site, and steroid dose were analyzed. Results Compared to baseline, blood glucose significantly (p=0.012) elevated 1 day after steroid injection but not 2 days after injection. In the HbA1c >7% and insulin groups, blood glucose was significantly increased 1 day after injection compared to that in the HbA1c ≤7% (p=0.011) and non-insulin (p=0.024) groups, respectively. Higher HbA1c level before injection was significantly (p=0.003) associated with the degree of blood glucose increase 1 day after injection. No significant differences were noted in the degree of blood glucose increase according to injection site or steroid dose. Conclusion Higher HbA1c level was associated with greater elevation in blood glucose 1 day after steroid injection. Careful monitoring of blood glucose is required on the first day after steroid injection in patients with poorly controlled DM.

With the spread of mobile devices, the use of mobile healthcare and e-learning using smartphones is increasing [1][2]. Recently, mobile healthcare using the diabetes self-management mobile app is gradually spreading [7]. Diabetes management using a mobile device can be input and recorded without time and space limitations, enabling efficient self-blood sugar management [8]. The effectiveness of the diabetes self-management mobile app may differ depending on what function is used [9], so it is necessary to consider the functions of the app for effective diabetes self-management. This study aims to supplement the limitations of blood sugar and self-management by diabetic patients themselves and to examine the functions through literature analysis on the diabetes self-management app used for effective management and to help in the development direction and potential of self-management app.
