An Ac-type Plasma Display Panel (PDP) operating with Ne-Ar(0.1%) Penning mixture gas is fabicated. The characterics of the panel with electrodes covered with thin and thick dielectric layers are studied. The brightness of the Neon-orange light emitted by the panel measured as function of applied voltage and frequency. As an application, a graphic display system equipped with PDP showing still and moving pictures is made.

The quantitative analysis of heavy metals(As, Cd, Cr, Hg, Pb, Cu) in the sea water around Kaduck island was conducted during the period of March, 1998 to September, 1998. The sea water in the four regions was sampled four times and the heavy metals were analyzed. The Heavy metal concentration of the sea water around Kaduck island was As 127.7㎍/ℓ , Cd 49.28㎍/ℓ , Cr 0.462㎍/ℓ, Hg 0.111㎍/ℓ, Pb 1.713㎍/ℓ, Cu 2.716㎍/ℓ in the average value, respectively.

We have encountered a rare case of symmetrical peripheral gangrene complicating Escherichia coli sepsis in a 47-years-old male. He was successfully treated with antibiotics, anticoagulants, and vasodilator. To our knowledge, this is the first report on symmetrical peripheral gangrene complicating E. coli sepsis in Korea.

Purpose: The surgical outcomes of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients undergoing radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer were inferior compared with those of non-ESRD patients. This study aimed to evaluate the short- and long-term surgical outcomes of ESRD patients undergoing laparoscopic gastrectomy (LG) and open gastrectomy (OG) for gastric cancer. Materials and Methods: Between 2004 and 2014, 38 patients (OG: 21 patients, LG: 17 patients) with ESRD underwent gastrectomy for gastric cancer. Comparisons were made based on the clinicopathological characteristics, surgical outcomes, and long-term survival rates. Results: No significant differences were noted in the clinicopathological characteristics of either group. LG patients had lower estimated blood loss volumes than OG patients (LG vs. OG: 94 vs. 275 mL, P=0.005). The operation time and postoperative hospital stay were similar in both the groups. The postoperative morbidity for LG and OG patients was 41.1% and 33.3%, respectively (P=0.873). No significant difference was observed in the long-term overall survival rates between the 2 groups (5-year overall survival, LG vs. OG: 82.4% vs. 64.7%, P=0.947). Conclusions: In ESRD patients, LG yielded non-inferior short- and long-term surgical outcomes compared to OG. Laparoscopic procedures might be safely adopted for ESRD patients who can benefit from the advantages of minimally invasive surgery.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Raman spectroscopy is a vibrational spectroscopic technique capable of providing details on the chemical composition, molecular structure and molecular interactions in cells and tissues. Its application of distinguishing normal and cancer tissue has been studied in a variety of sites, such as the cervix, lung, larynx and skin. The purpose was to explore spectral changes between normal and cancer tissue in the larynx using Raman spectroscopy to assess the feasibility of using Raman spectroscopy for the early diagnosis of laryngeal cancer. MATERIALS AND METHOD: Laryngeal tissue specimens (13 adjacent normal and 13 cancer tissues) were obtained from patients who underwent total laryngetomy or supracricoid laryngectomy with squamous cell carcinoma of the larynx. The specimens were stored -70 degrees C until use. These specimens were defrosted at room temperature. The Raman spectra from laryngeal tissue specimens could be obtained at 300 mW and 250 scan during 15 minutes of the signal acquisition time using FT-Raman spectroscopy (Bruker Co., Karsruhe, Germany). RESULTS: Raman spectra were different significantly between cancer and adjacent normal tissues of the larynx at 1446 cm-1, 1240 cm-1, 1335 cm-1, and 1655 cm-1 (p=0.007, 0.2, 0.2, 0.3, respectively). The difference of 1446 cm-1 means the change of CH2 bending mode in protein and lipid of malignant tissue. The change of 1335 cm-1 means a decrease in CH3CH2 to a wagging mode of collagen and polynucleotide chain of malignant tissue. The difference of 1240 and 1655 means a decrease in the alpha-helix conformation of collagen. CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates the differences of Raman units between laryngeal cancer and adjacent normal tissue using Raman spectroscopy. In future, Raman spectroscopy may become a useful tool of guided biopsy for accurate pathologic diagnosis and assessment of the adequacy of resection margins.
