      • Self-assembled proteinticle nanostructures for 3-dimensional display of antibodies.

        <P>'Proteinticle' is a nano-scale protein particle that is self-assembled inside cells with constant 3D structure and surface topology. The binding of IgG to the B domain of Staphylococcal protein A (SPA(B)) molecules that are genetically inserted on the surface of proteinticle enables the variable domains of bound IgG to be well oriented to effectively capture antigens, accordingly forming a highly sensitive 3D IgG probe. The five different proteinticles that originate from humans, bacteria, and virus and totally differ in size, shape, and surface structure were used for the surface display of SPA(B). The dissociation constant (K(D)) in the binding of IgG to SPA(B) on the proteinticle surface was estimated based on the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model: K(D) was 1-3 orders-of-magnitude lower compared to the previously reported K(D) in the binding of IgG to Staphylococcal protein A. The surface density and distribution of SPA(B) and especially the existence of hot (or highly congested) spots of SPA(B), which depend on the surface structure and the number of subunits as well as size and shape of proteinticle, is of crucial importance for the effective binding of IgG to SPA(B) on proteinticles. Although the five different proteinticles were demonstrated as proof-of-concept here, SPA(B)-mediated immobilization of IgG on the other proteinticles would be very useful for the fabrication of sensitive 3D immunoassay platforms.</P>

        SPIN90 Depletion and Microtubule Acetylation Mediate Stromal Fibroblast Activation in Breast Cancer Progression

        <P>Disrupting expression of a determinant of microtubule acetylation may pose an effective therapeutic strategy to treat breast cancers.</P><P>Biomechanical remodeling of stroma by cancer-associated fibroblasts (CAF) in early stages of cancer is critical for cancer progression, and mechanical cues such as extracellular matrix stiffness control cell differentiation and malignant progression. However, the mechanism by which CAF activation occurs in low stiffness stroma in early stages of cancer is unclear. Here, we investigated the molecular mechanism underlying CAF regulation by SPIN90 and microtubule acetylation under conditions of mechanically soft matrices corresponding to normal stromal rigidity. SPIN90 was downregulated in breast cancer stroma but not tumor, and this low stromal expression correlated with decreased survival in breast cancer patients. <I>Spin90</I> deficiency facilitated recruitment of mDia2 and APC complex to microtubules, resulting in increased microtubule acetylation. This increased acetylation promoted nuclear localization of YAP, which upregulated expression of myofibroblast marker genes on soft matrices. <I>Spin90</I> depletion enhanced tumor progression, and blockade of microtubule acetylation in CAF significantly inhibited tumor growth in mice. Together, our data demonstrate that loss of SPIN90-mediated microtubule acetylation is a key step in CAF activation in low stiffness stroma.       • 한-중 FTA의 양념채소시장에 대한 효과분석

        As of Oct, 2012, Korea-China FTA has agreed on its 4th negotiation and the sensitive products for both parties are agricultural products and manufacturing, respectively. In Korea, cultivated area for pepper and garlic is constantly reducing but it is increasing for onion. The main purpose of the present study is to analyze the economic effect of pepper, garlic and onion market when the Korea-China FTA is completed at some point of time. The economic effect has analysed based on dried pepper, fresh and frozen garlic and fresh onion for each item of pepper, garlic and onion, respectively. The consumption substitution model (Lee, Yong-Kee, 2006) is used to analyze the present study and small state assumption is applied. For base t ariff , f rozen t ype is 2 7% for p epper, f resh t ype is 5 0% and frozen type is 27% for garlic, fresh type is 135% for onion and we assume the instant elimination of these tariffs. As a result of the analysis, price of domestic pepper is decreased as much as 5.4% and for domestic garlic, in case of elimination of the tariff, the price is decreased as much as 12.8%. For domestic onion, the price is decreased as much as 6.4%. For produce, pepper produce shows 0.9~2.6% of decrease and gross income shows 2.8 ~8.0% of decrease. When the tariff is eliminated for 50%, garlic produce is decreased for 0.5% and gross income is decreased for 13.3%. Lastly, for onion, production is decreased for 2.2% and gross income is decreased for 8.6%.

        Barriers to Safe and Effective Medication for Individuals with Sensory Impairment: A Systematic Literature Review

        Visual impairment (VI) and hearing impairment (HI) are common disabilities whose prevalence increases with age, potentially presenting a major challenge in the future. Identifying the types of obstacles which they encounter during drug administration is essential to improve health outcomes. This systematic literature review aimed to identify types of medication barriers encountered by individuals with VI or HI to improve their health outcomes. Combination of keywords indicating VI or HI, barrier, challenge, or difficulty, and drug or medication were used to identify potential studies up to May 31, 2021, from Ovid Medline, Embase, and Cochrane. Overall, 20 and 17 articles met the predefined eligibility criteria for VI and HI, respectively. Individuals with VI were found to encounter difficulties in the entire process of pharmaceutical therapy, including drug identification, medication management, access to pharmacies, medication instructions, drug information (labeling), and communication. Individuals with HI were found to experience challenges in communication, health literacy, and negative experiences and emotions toward doctors/pharmacists. The drug management needs of individuals with VI and HI remain unmet. For safe and effective medication in individuals with VI and HI, it is essential to establish practical solutions, such as providing identification tools for tablets for those with VI, deploying sign language interpreters at designated healthcare institutions and pharmacies for individuals with HI, utilizing novel technologies, including audio prescription labeling systems or mobile applications, and providing education for both healthcare providers and individuals with disabilities to improve their partnership in drug therapy.

        In this paper, we developed a wireless sensor network system to monitor the temperature and humidity of the agriculture environment. In order to construct a low-cost and low-complexity system, a narrow-bandwidth communication based on 424MHz frequency band is considered while achieving reliable wireless links. The developed system is implemented in a farm for maesil, which is sort of plum. For a slope farm environment, the system can successfully gather the measured data.

        Objective: Occupational medicine specialists in the Busan, Ulsan and Kyung-Nam areas established an area-based occupational disease surveillance system and used this system to collected case information for the purpose of preventing occupational diseases Methods: l l hospital participated in this system. The authors selected five main diseases, which were hand-arm vibration syndrome (HAVS), work-related musculoskeletal disorder (WRMSD), occupational asthma, occupational skin disease and occupational and occupational lung cancer and established their case definitions. All cases were reported on the web, and real time analysis was conducted. Results: Between April 2001 and April 2003, 192 cases of HAVS, 118 cases of WRMSD, 33 cases of occupational asthma, 17 cases of occupational skin disease and 17 cases of occupational lung cancer (for a total of 377 cases of these five main diseases) were reported. most of the HAVS cases came from shipbuilding, and 172 of them (92.7%) were associated with grinding. Of the four main types of WRMSD, carpal tunnel syndrome (CTS) was the most prevalent with 46 cases and shipbuilding was also the main industry involved (83.9%). The ergonomic risk factors involved mainly associated with the hand. In 19 (57.6%) and 4 (12.1%) cases of occupational asthma, the agents involved. The causative agents of occupational lung cancer included Cr, welding fume, PAH, Ni, etc. 10(58.8%) of the cases were diagnosed as squamous cell carcinoma and 5(29.4%) as adenoma. Conclusion: This result showed that an area-based occupational disease surveillance system might provide an effective method of evaluating the prevalence of such diseases, however the Busan, Ulsan and Kyung-Nam provinces are too large to be treated as individual areas. Therefore, the authors suggest that each province should establish its own surveillance system.

      • Breakfast consumption and depressive mood: A focus on socioeconomic status

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Skipping breakfast can be potentially harmful because breakfast consumption is considered one of the important health-related behaviors that benefit physical and mental health. As the rate of depression has increased recently, we investigated the association between the frequency of eating breakfast and depression in adults. We obtained the data from the 2013 Korean Community Health Survey; a total of 207,710 survey participants aged 20 years or over were studied. Participants were categorized into three groups by the frequency of breakfast consumption as follows: “seldom,” “sometimes,” and “always.” We performed a multiple logistic regression to investigate the association between breakfast consumption and depressive mood. Subgroup analyses were conducted by stratifying socioeconomic variables controlling for variables known to be associated with depressive symptoms. Participants who had breakfast seldom or sometimes had higher depressive symptoms than those who always ate breakfast (“seldom”: OR = 1.43, 95% CI 1.36–1.52; “sometimes”: OR = 1.32, 95% CI 1.23–1.40). Subgroup analyses showed that this association was more marked in those who were 80 years or older, those who had low household income, or those with elementary school education level or less. The result of this study suggests that lack of breakfast consumption is associated with depression among adults with different socioeconomic factors.</P>

      • Morphological Characters and Total Phenolic Contents(TPC) of Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) Germplasm

        Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) is known as an oil seed crop originated from southern Asia. Chemical components of safflower have been reported such as phenolic acids, flavonoids, quinochalcones and others. It is vastly utilized in various medical conditions and used for flavoring and coloring purpose. Thus, we examined the amount of total phenolic contents (TPC) and investigated the relation between morphological characters with the TPC in 210 accessions from RDA genebank, Korea. TPC was estimated with Folin-Ciocalteu colorimetric assay. Variations in TPC were evaluated from 21.9 to 147 ㎍ GAE/mg dried extract (DE). Correlation showed there were significant inverse correlations of TPC with leaf width and length while others were not related with TPC. The red color of flower had the lowest range of TPC. The maximum and minimum of TPC was all in the yellow color of flower. Biplot analysis revealed that the positive contributors of Dim1 were leaf width, length, flowering and weight of 100 seeds. Meanwhile, Dim2 was mostly contributed by ripening stage. Accessions K185021 containing high TPC could be used for further research in developing new varieties and functional products.

        Comparison of the Frequency Bands for the Wireless Sensor Networks in the Building Environment

        In this paper, for the pratical building envoronments, the propagation properties of the electromagnetic waves of the sub-1GHz bands, including the 447MHz, 868MHz, and 715MHz, and the 2.4GHz band are experimentally observed in therms of the received signal strength indicator (RSSI) value. The compasion of the frequency bands can be utilized to efficiently construct the wireless sensor networks (WSN) for the building automation control. In order to measure the RSSI values in the building, an RSSI measurement system is first designed, in which the master part can transmit data packets and measure the corresponding RSSI values, and the slave part can respond the received data packets. Using the measurement system, the RSSI values are then experimentally measured at four types of building enviroments. From the experimental result analysis, we could notice that the sub-1GHz, especially the 447MHz band, showd a good communication performance for the building environment and could provide an efficient WSN construction when the data rate is relatively low.

        Toxicological Study of Safflower Seeds by Thirteen-Week Repeated Oral Administration in F344 Rats

        Safflower seeds which contains large amounts of conjugated linoleic acid and glyceride, are known to have effect on osteoporosis, bone fracture, and cholesterol metabolism. In this study, the 13-week repeated oral dose toxicity study of Safflower seeds was performed using F344 rats. In 14-day repeated dose study to determine the adequate dosage of safflower seeds administration, no other important changes were observed except statistically significant decreases in the mean absolute weights of the liver and the mean liver weight relative to body weight. It was dose-related finding at groups higher than 0.015 g/㎏ body weight (B.W.) in males and 0.045 g/㎏ B.W. in females. Based on preliminary test, safflower seeds was orally administered five times per week, weekday only to 5 groups of 6-week-old 10 male and 10 female F344 rats at dosage levels of 0.003, 0.016, 0.08, 0.4 and 2 g/㎏/day. The control group, also consisting of 10 males and 10 females, received the vehicle, 1% methylcellulose (MC), on a comparable regimen. One male and a female in the 0.4 g/㎏/day group, and a female in the 2 g/㎏/day group were found dead but the death could not be related to test article toxicity. No test article-related effect was observed on clinical signs and water consumption. For the 2 g/㎏/day males, there were significant decrease in body weight changes and food consumption from 10th week to study termination. The statistically significant decreases in the mean absolute weights of liver and the mean liver weight relative to body weight of the 0.003, 0.016 and 2 g/㎏/day group males and 0.003, 0.016 and 0.08 g/㎏/day females showed no dose related pattern and considered not to be test article related. There were no dose-related changes in hematology, biochemistry parameters, sperm morphology and vaginal cytology of all animals treated with safflower seeds. Gross and histopathological findings revealed no evidence of specific toxicity related to safflower seeds. These results suggest that no-observed adverse-effect level (NOAEL) of the test substance was considered to be 2 g/㎏/day for male and female rats under the conditions in this study.
