Percutaneous needle biopsies of peritoneum with Abrams needle and Cope needle were done un 64 patients with non-purulent exudative ascites, who was admitted to the department of internal medicine, Chosun University hospital, from January 1978 to Deccmber 1983. The diagnostic significance and safety of the needle biopsy was estimated. The results were as follows. 1. Adequate peritoneal tissue for pathological diagnosis was obtained in 53 cases(82.8%) among 64 cases. (Abrams needle 84.8%, Cope needle 80.6%) 2. Definitive diagnosis was obtained in 31 cases among 53 cases (58.6%). (Tuberculosis 23 cases, malignancy 8 cases). 3. As compared final diagnosis with biopsy result, the rate of final diagnosis corresponding with biopsy diagnosis was 58.8% in tuberculosis and 26.3%, in malignancy, but the rate of biopsy diagnosis corresponding with final diagnosis was 100% in both tuberculosis and malignancy. 4. Cases of chronic non-specific inflammation which were diagnosed by biopsy were 13cases(24.5%)among 53 cases, and among these cases, tuberculosis was 69.2% and malignancy 30.8% on final diagnosis and among 53 cases, histologically normal was 9 cases(16.9%) of which 33.3% was tuberculosis and 66.7% was malignancy on final diagnosis. 5. Of the malignant cases on final diagnosis, Positive cytologic examination of ascitic fluid was 16.7% 6. Primary losions of cancerous peritonitis were stomach cancer (38.9%) hepatocellular cancer(22.2%) colon cancer (11.1%) ovarian cancer (11.1%) Pancreatic cancer (5.6%). 7. Complication of percutaneous peritoneal biopsy was local swelling with leakage of ascitic fluid and the accident rate were 36.4,% in Abraham needle and 3.2% in Cope needle.

An eleven year old castrated male Maltese was presented to the Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital of Chungnam National University. In physical examination, approximately 0.5 cm round mass was observed on tail base. This small elevated mass has also shown alopecic and firm configuration. It was differentially diagnosed as sebaceous adenoma and hyperplasia by fine needle aspiration. After surgical removal, the sample was diagnosed as sebaceous hyperplasia by histopathological examination. It has not yet shown any signs of recurrence and prognosis has teen good.
유산양 유방염에 대한 Chitosan 약침의 치료 효과

To improve the therapeutic method for mastitis, treatment effect of chitosan pharmacopuncture was examined in three milking goats(A,B and C). Mastitis was artificially induced in two milking goats(A and B) and one goat(C) was naturally infected case with mastitis. The acupoint used was Yang-Ming and chitosan suspensions(provided from Tottory University, Japan: 30㎎ of chitosan/㎖)were injected to the acupoint with 5㎖/time for 3 days, respectively. As for the change of somatic cells in milk along with chitosan pharmacopuncture, they showed a decreasing tendency after increase on the 3rd day in all udders of B. In addition, as for the change of total leukocyte counts of peripheral blood with chitosan pharmacopuncture, they showed a decreasing tendency after increase on the 3rd day in B and C except A which showed a increasing tendency until on the 7th day. In the change of neutrophil/lymphocyte(N/L) ratio, increasing tendency was seen in A and C but increasing tendency after slight decrease was observed in B. Further, in the change of serum total protein and A/G ratio, serum total protein content was decreased after slightly increase on the 3rd day in A, and they were decreased after increase until on the 7th day in B and C, respectively. As for the change of A/G ratio, different pattern increasing tendency was shown in A, B and C.

Objective: Instent restenosis (ISR) remains still an important issue even in drug-eluting stents era. We hypothesized that higher inflammatory reaction, which is known as an important atherosclerotic process, at the culprit lesion may have higher restenosis. We sought to evaluate the baseline coronary plaque composition in patients with ISR. Methods: Study population consisted of 241 patients with coronary artery disease, who underwent percutaneous coronary intervention with virtual histology- intravascular ultrasound (VH-IVUS) and 9 months follow up coronary angiography. We compared coronary plaque composition between patients with ISR and those without ISR. Results: Patients with ISR (n=27, 11.2%) were likely to be older (66.2±9.5 years vs. 58.7±11.7 years, p=0.002), increased high sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP, 1.60±3.59 mg/dl vs. 0.31±0.76 mg/dl, p<0.001) than those without ISR (n=214, 88.8%). Baseline angiographic, procedural findings and gray scale IVUS findings showed no significant differences between 2 groups. VH-IVUS examination showed necrotic core volume (22.1±19.9 mm3 vs.14.2±12.7 mm3, p=0.045) and percent necrotic core volume (14.3±8.7% vs. 19.5±9.1%, p=0.005) were higher in those without ISR than those with ISR, whereas percent fibrofatty volume was higher (16.6±9.7% vs. 12.4±8.4%, p=0.018) in those with ISR than those without ISR. The independent predictors for ISR were hs-CRP (Odd ratio=3.334, 95% confidence interval (CI); 1.158~9.596, p=0.026), and age (Odd ratio=3.557, 95% CI; 1.242~10.192, p=0.018). Conclusions: This study suggests that ISR was not associated with baseline coronary plaque composition but old age and an increased inflammatory marker such as hs-CRP. The main objectives of this study were to investigate physicochemicals and antioxidant activities of new red rice (Oryza sativa cv. Gunganghongmi (GH)) by comparing normal brown (Nampyeongbyeo, NB) and reported red rice (Jukjinjubyeo, JB) in Korea. The nutritional constituents, including protein, oil, sugar, fatty acid, GABA, and ${\gamma}$-oryzanol were not significantly different between normal brown and colored rice. However, the ethanol extract of GH showed the highest phenolic content ($24.7{\pm}1.3\;mg\;g^{-1}$). The ethanol extracts of GH showed higher scavenging activities against DPPH ($0.2\;mg\;mL^{-1}=62.1{\pm}2.5%$) and ABTS ($0.2\;mg\;mL^{-1}=63.2{\pm}3.5%$) radicals. Moreover, GH more inhibited LPS-induced nitric oxide (NO) production ($13.2{\pm}1.4{\mu}M$) than JB ($18.3{\pm}2.3{\mu}M$) and NB ($22.1{\pm}1.4{\mu}M$) at the same concentration ($0.2\;mg\;mL^{-1}$) without cytotoxicity. These results suggest that new red rice (GH) would be considered to be new functional rice due to its anti-oxidative effect and high nutrition.

The fruits of Acanthopanax sessiliflorus Seeman (Araliaceae) were extracted with 70% aqueous ethanol at room temperature. The concentrated extract was partitioned with ethyl acetate (EtOAc), n-butyl alcohol, and H2O, successively. From the EtOAc fraction, two compounds were isolated through the repeated silica gel, octadecyl silica gel, and Sephadex LH-20 column chromatographies. According to the results of physicochemical and spectroscopic data including NMR, mass spectrometry, and infrared spectroscopy, the chemical structures of the compounds were determined as 3,5-dihydroxycinnamic acid (1) and protocatechuic acid (2). Compound 1 was isolated from the fruits of A. sessiliflirus Seeman for the first time. And the compounds were evaluated for the radical scavenging the antioxidant capacity using 2,2`-azino-bis(3-ethylbenzthiazoline-6- sulfonic acid)diammonium salt, 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazy, and oxygen radical absorbance capacity assay.

Total polyphenolic, protein, lipid, and anthocyanin contents in grains of 12 Korean colored rice varieties were evaluated for their 2,2-di(4-tert-octylphenyl)-1-picrylhydrazyl) (DPPH) and 2,2-Azino-bis(3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) diammonium (ABTS) radical- scavenging activities. Three anthocyanins, cyanidin-3-O-glucoside (Cy-3-G), petunidin-3-O-glucoside (Pt-3-G), and peonidin-3-O-glucoside (Pn-3-G), were also characterized by ultra performance liquid chromatography. Among the rice varieties, 'Heugjinju', 'Heugseol', and 'Sintoheugmi' contained high total phenolic contents compared to other varieties. Anthocyanin content was highest in 'Heugjinju'; no anthocyanins were detected in 'Hongjinju' and 'Jeogjinju'. Highest antioxidant activity was observed in 'Heugjinju' and 'Jeogjinju' exhibited the lowest activity. To determine the correlation of total polyphenolic and anthocyanin contents to antioxidant activity, linear regression analysis was carried out. The results showed total polyphenolic content was strongly correlated with antioxidant activity, suggesting total phenolic content as key factor in antioxidant activity of colored rice. 'Heugjinju', 'Heugseol', and 'Sintoheugmi' could have important nutritional value.
