Vol.29 No.1

This paper is a fundamental study on Mary Sungduk Youn (尹聖德, 1903~1968), a female musician who studied abroad in early modern Korea, and starts to discover her life and her musical activities based on primary sources and historical records such as newspapers, magazines, copies of personal documents and the records from the universities and the archives in the U.S. Based on them, Youn’s life can be divided into 3 periods. The first period is the time when she was raised and educated under the Christian family and Ewha Haktang. And the second is the time when she went abroad to study music in the U.S., supported by several missionaries involved in Ewha College and the time she devoted herself as a professor to improve the music educational system of Ewha College after coming back from America. The last is the time after she revisited the U.S. for having experience on the latest music educational system and for introducing it to Ewha College. The vocation for music that appeared throughout Youn’s life and activities was manifest as a music educator under the strong influence of Christianity and women’s education policy rather than self-actualization for personal success and fame. And Youn was an important figure after Alice Kim (1890~1951) who was the first music educator going abroad to study in the U.S., and as a pioneer Youn was at the beginning of studying abroad of female musicians such as Mary Chesik Kim (1906~2005) and Youngyi Kim (1908~1986), supported by missionaries within their strong network. By discovering Youn’s life and musical activities with the people involved, this study will provide the opportunity to examine the conflicts and desires of female musicians who were active in the early modern Korea.

        America in Brian Friel’s Plays

Vol.7 No.2

This paper explores Friel's perspective towards America has changed, by examining his depiction of Irish American immigrants, his evocative portrayal of America as villain and his stylistic and thematic similarities to American playwrights Thorn Wilder and Tennessee Williams. At first, I investigate the discussion of emigration to America from the female perspective in The Loves of Cass McGuire and Translations. And then I examines the reasons behind his increasing disgust with American selfishness and the materialism, as typified in The Mundy Scheme and American Welcome. Lastly, I consider his debt to two American playwrights, Thornton Wilder and Tennessee Williams. As a result, I can understand the complexities of meaning America has for Friel.

Marina Carr and Tom Murphy's Alternative Narrative: Rewriting the Irish Oral Tradition

Vol.6 No.2

This study examines how Tom Murphy and Marina Carr use Irish oral tradition motifs such as folklore in their plays to bring the audience to a state of mind where they engage with Ireland's search for a cultural post-colonial identity. In The Mai, Carr employs the “myth within the play” construction. As we saw, within the Owl Lake myth, Carr seems both to mirror and modify, at times even contradict, the original folktales on which she bases her myth of Owl Lake. Carr draws a link between the life of her protagonist, the protagonist of the myth, and links both to the Irish identity question in Portia Coughlan. As did the myth of Owl Lake, the Belmont River reflects a myriad of Irish folktale motifs. Murphy's play also explores the difficulty and pressure imposed on the individual suffering from outmoded myths and unable to make a new continual mode of living that integrates important cultural change. As a result, they are especially effective in modernizing the folk motifs to speak to the increasingly fragmented diaspora of Irish, and revitalize not only these past traditions, but in turn, perhaps also the Irish identity.

Background and Purposes: Over the past three decades, numerous studies performed in Korea have reported that job stress is a determinant risk factor for chronic diseases and work disability. Every society has its own culture and occupational climate particular to their organizations, and hence experiences different occupational stress. An occupational stress measurement tool therefore needs to be developed to estimate it objectively. The purpose of this study is to develop and standardize the Korean Occupational Stress Scale (KOSS) which is considered to be unique and specific occupational stressors in Korean employees. Subjects and Methods: Data were obtained from the National Study for Development and Standardization of Occupational Stress (NSDSOS Project: 2002-2004). A total of 12,631 employees from a nationwide sample proportional to the Korean Standard Industrial Classification and the Korean Standard Occupational Classification were administered. The KOSS was developed for 2 years (2002-2004). In the first year, we collected 255 items from the most popular job stress measurement tools such as JCQ, ERI, NIOSH and OSI, and 44 items derived from the a qualitative study (depth interview). Forty-three items of KOSS, in the second year, were retained for use in the final version of the KOSS by using Delphi and factor analysis. Items were scored using conventional 1-2-3-4 Likert scores for the response categories. Results: We developed eight subscales by using factor analysis and validation process: physical environment (3 items), job demand (8 items), insufficient job control (5 items), interpersonal conflict (4 items), job insecurity (6 items), organizational system (7 items), lack of reward (6 items), and occupational climate (4 items). Together they explained 50.0% of total variance. Internal consistency alpha scores were ranged from 0.51 to 0.82. Twenty-four items of the short form of the KOSS (KOSS-SF) were also developed to estimate job stress in the work setting. Because the levels of the subscales of occupational stress were gender dependent, gender-specific standard norms for both the 43-item full version and the 24-item short form using a quartile for the subscales of KOSS were presented. Conclusion: The results of this study suggest that KOSS might be an appropriate measurement scale to estimate occupational stress of Korean employees. Further and more detailed study needs to be conducted to improve the validity of this scale.

Governance is a widely supported and accepted concept in the political and administrative system of the world. It refers to a managerial mechanism and also a philosophy in those arenas. This article goes over the concept theoretically in a holistic perspective in order to explore its fundamental principles. This article pinpoints the deterministic nature of the concept. Since the concept was born and developed by other western and developed countries, it may be inevitable that the concept has been well geared to those countries. This article argues that any countries and governments should be able to discern their own not only peculiarities of political and administrative system, but also those of civil society and its capacity to deal with public affairs as a partner of governments. Many influential studies on governance are discussed and analyzed so as to highlight its relativity. The authors explain main activities, coordinators between various stakeholders, and the role of stakeholders in governance system and emphasize the relative nature of the interface between stakeholders of governance system.

Vol.35 No.-

Human life span has continuously expanded due to development of science and modern medicine, period of 'empty nest' has increased from the influence of nuclear family syndrome and individualism, and therefore, problem of loneliness and solitude of the old has become inevitable. We must respectively increase our scope of interest for the old not only to living long and healthy, but also to improvement of life quality and satisfying life. The conditions to maintain life of the old worthy are satisfaction of affection through family or a spouse, mental and physical health, economical stability, good friends, and taking a role to contribute to others, but sexual satisfaction to some level is also an important factor. The old have been recognized as subjects for filial piety, and sex has always been something secret and indecent to show interest for sex since sex through physical satisfaction has been considered bashful and immoral due to existence of Confucianism. This closeness of the old towards sex and the bias of the people that the old do not have sexual interest or the ability, causes social issues such as increase of diffusive disease through sex that develops due to inappropriate relationships and prostitution activity of the old through people so called as 'Bacchus Women's Korea, who target on the money the old have. According to the studies of old academics, the first factor of deciding sexual activity, the sexual drive is not lost even in the old days, and they propose that the reason of decrease in sexual activity is influenced by social environment and attitude of the surrounding people rather than increase in age, which suggests that there is no limit to age in sex life. Moreover, they emphasize on the fact that continuous sex life can decrease negative effect to aging to the old by letting them have higher self-respect and satisfaction for life, and the feeling that 'everything of mine is still alive' through sex. The social features that hides and prohibits sex to the old must not exist anymore. Sex does not exist only for the young, and the old should be able to enjoy sex as not only independent beings who have sacrificed and serviced for one generation, but also as those with experience to have more room and time for sex. Thus, the government, civil organizations, and social education institutions must let the people out of the ignorance and bias of the old towards sex by providing correct information and knowledge about sex of the old, and activation of consultation business and programs for re-marriage of the old is demanded to decrease the number of ole people who live alone. Furthermore, professionals should be allocated at each consultation organizations to provide education chances so the old will not consider their sexual drives sinful. Then a true meaning of welfare for the old can be materialized when sex of the old is recognized not as dark or negative, but as healthy, bright, and beautiful activity.
