파어탕의 L-NAME 유도 고혈압 동물군에서의 혈압강하효과 및 심신기능 개선 효과

Hypertension has been approved to cause disharmony between the heart and kidney such as cardiac hypertrophy and kidney dysfunction. In traditional oriental medicine Paeo-tang (PET) has been shown to have effects on blood circulation improvement. However, the beneficial effect of PET on hypertension remains unknown. In this study, we investigated that PET attenuates blood pressure and improves cardiovascular and renal function in NG-nitro-L-arginine methylester (L-NAME) rat model. Hypertensive rat models were induced by the administration of L-NAME (40 mg/kg/day) and then PET (50 or 100 mg/kg/day) or Olmetec was treated for 2 weeks. PET treatment significantly suppressed the systolic blood pressure and decreased intima-media thickness in the thoracic aorta. PET ameliorated endothelium-dependent and independent vascular relaxation in the L-NAME-induced vascular dysfunction. PET ameliorated the functional decline in the kidney such as albumin and blood urea nitrogen in plasma. These results demonstrated that PET possesses protective effects against L-NAME-induced hypertension.

A 7-year-old castrated male Schnauzer was presented with melena and inappetence. Laboratory examination revealed mild anemia. Abdominal ultrasonography showed abnormal enlargement of intestinal segment and a oval mass with soft tissue density. After surgical resection of the enlarged intestine including the mass, histopathologic examination showed that the mass was tentatively diagnosed as synchronous occurrence of gland cell- and mesenchymal cell-origin tumors. Subsequently, immunohistochemistry showed positivity to cytokeratin AE1/AE3 in the gland cells and positivity to α-smooth muscle-specific actin, but negative expression of c-Kit, suggesting the co-existence of adenocarcinoma and leiomyosarcoma. Follow-up examination after 3-year of the surgery confirmed that the dog remained healthy and did not show recurrence of the tumors.

In traditional Korean and Chinese medicine, safflower (Carthamus tinctorius L.) for the treatment of centralnervous system-related symptoms such as tremor, seizure, stroke and epilepsy. We investigated the effects of safflower couldinfluence cerebral ischemia-induced neuronal and cognitive impairments. Administration of safflower for 1 day(200㎎/㎏ body weight, p.o.) increased the survival of hippocampal CA1 pyramidal neurons after transient global brainischemia. And neurological functions measured as short term memory. Post-treatment with safflower for 2 times decreasedthe induction/reduction - induced production of neuronal cell loss from global cerebral ischemia. Safflower markedlydecreased neuronal cell death and also caused a decrease in the content of thiobarbituric acid-reacting substances(TBARS) (55.2±9.4µmol mg-¹) and significant improvement of activities of glutathione (GSH) (27.2±5.0µmol mg-¹) inhippocampus. We conclude that treatment with safflower attenuated learning and memory deficits, and neuronal cell lossinduced by global cerebral ischemia. These results suggest that safflower may be a potential candidate for the treatment ofvascular dementia.
Osteoprotective Effect of Extract from Cirsium japonicum var. ussuriense in Ovariectomized Rats

This study was carried out to investigate the effects of the Cirsium japonicum var. ussuriense (C. japonicum)extract on serum level of hormones from induced osteoporosis by ovariectomized rats. Two month-old rats were ovariectomized(OVX), remained untreated for 8 weeks, and were subsequently administered C. japonicum (200 ㎎/㎏) every day for8 weeks. We examined the effects of treated C. japonicum on ovariectomy-related changes in Insulin-like Growth Factors(IGF), Insulin-like Growth Factor binding protein-3 (IGBF-3), Estrogen, Calcium, and Phosporus. After 8 weeks, the serumlevels of IGF-I, -II, and IGFBP-3 were higher presented as compared to the other two groups (P < 0.05), in the C. japonicumextract treatment on OVX rats. There were differences between OVX and C. japonicum extract treated OVX rats in serumlevels of Ca2+, but Ca2+ levels for the normal group was higher than for the other two groups. The C. japonicum extractincreased both serum IGFs and IGFBP-3 levels on induced osteoporotic rat by ovariectomized. Thus, these results revealedthat the C. japonicum extract is a possible role for improvement of osteoporosis induced-ovariectomized rats and has a greatpotential as an alternative tool for the treatment of osteoporosis.
농촌지역 주민의 사회자본과 건강관련 삶의 질과의 관련성

Background: Social capital is gaining more attention as an important factor of health-related quality of life (HRQOL). However, studies of the association between social capital and HRQOL among the elderly in rural areas are sparse, even though social capital could have a more profound effect on these people compared to those from other areas and other age groups. Methods: A self-administered questionnaire was constructed to gather information on demographic variables, health behaviors, chronic diseases, HRQOL (KEQ-5D), social capital (adapted from the Integrated Questionnaire for measurement of Social Capital: SC-IQ). This questionnaire was administered to 167 residents of Chuncheon City, Gangwon Province, Korea. Multiple regression method was applied to examine the association between SC-IQ and KEQ-5D scores. Results: Of 167 participants, 40.7% were male and 59.3% were female. Mean ages were 59.04±16.07 years and 62.86±17.00 years, respectively. Among three levels of social capital, an increase in community level score was significantly associated with greater anxiety and depression, which was presented as an increased KEQ-5D Anxiety/Depression domain score (adjusted OR 1.049, 95% confidence interval 1.022-1.076) and with a higher overall HRQOL, which was presented as an increased KEQ-5D VAS score (β=0.028, P=0.024). Conclusions: Among this group of elderly people from one rural community, enriched social capital of comm- unity level based on trusting relationships was associated with better overall HRQOL and emotional health. 연구배경: 농촌 사회의 노인은 그 특성상 사회자본이 건강관련 삶의 질에 큰 영향을 미칠 수 있는 인구집단임에도 불구하고 이들 인구집단에 대한 사회자본과 건강관련 삶의 질에 대한 연구는 거의 이루어지지 않았다. 방법: 대상자의 인구사회학적 변수, 건강관련 행태, 만성질환 여부, 건강관련 삶의 질(KEQ-5D), 사회자본(번안 Integrated Questionnaire for measurement of Social Capital: SC-IQ)의 측정을 위한 자가 기입식 설문을 구성하여, 강원도 춘천시 거주 주민 167명에게 적용하였다. SC-IQ와 KEQ-5D의 점수 간의 관련성을 확인하기 위하여 다변량 회귀분석을 실시하였다. 결과: 총 167명의 대상자 중 40.7%는 남성이었고, 59.3%는 여성이었다. 각각의 평균연령은 59.04±16.07세와 62.86± 17.00세였다. 사회자본 수준 중, 공동체 수준의 사회자본 점수가 증가할수록 불안과 우울 영역의 점수가 개선되었으며(adjusted OR 1.049, 95% 신뢰구간 1.022-1.076), 전반적 건강관련 삶의 질을 나타내는 KEQ-5D VAS 점수 역시 개선되었다(β=0.028, P=0.024). 결론: 고령자 중심의 농촌 지역 주민에 있어서, 신뢰관계에 기반을 둔 공동체 수준의 사회자본은 전반적 건강관련 삶의 질과 정서 건강의 향상과 관련성이 있다.

Objectives: The seeds from Arctium lappa have been considered for its various pharmacological properties, which include anti-carcinogenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-diabetic, and anti-viral activities. Methods: In the present study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effect of the ethanol extract from the seeds of Arctium lappa L (EAL) on cytokine-induced vascular inflammation in human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC). Results: Pretreatment with EAL significantly decreased tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-α)-induced cell adhesion molecules expression such as intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), and endothelial-selectin (E-selectin) in a dose-dependent manner. Cell adhesion assay showed that pretreatment with EAL suppressed HUVEC-monocyte adhesion by TNF-α over 1 μg/ml concentration. We investigated the involvement of nuclear transcription factor kappa-B (NF-κB) in TNF-α-induced vascular inflammation. NF-κB p65 nuclear expression was induced by TNF-α, however, pretreatment with EAL was attenuated that nuclear translocation. In cytoplasm, EAL was also attenuated TNF-α-induced decrease of inhibitor of κB-α (IκB-α) expression. Moreover, EAL significantly decreased TNF-α-induced production of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS). Conclusions: Taken together, our findings suggest that seeds of Arctium lappa L could be a therapeutic herb for prevention of cardiovascular diseases throughout the inhibition of vascular endothelial inflammation.
