Single plate-like crystal of Bi-layered ferroelectric perovskite SrBi2Ta2O9 was prepared by self- ux method. Temperature dependence of the lattice constant c, specic heat, Raman scattering were measured to study phase transitions in SrBi2Ta2O9. There are clear anomalies at 613 K (Tc) and 850 K (T) in the c-axis. The mechanism of this phase transition was discussed in terms of Dzialoshinsky-Moriya-type interaction.
Fluoride Inhibition of Photosynthesis in Some Crop Plants

콩, 보리, 토마토 (以上 C_3 作物)과 옥수수(C_4 作物)의 切斷葉에 HF를 暴露하거나, KF를 供與하였을 때 光合成速度와 蒸散速度는 低下하였다. 옥수수의 光合成低下는 콩, 보리, 토마토 보다 더 했다. 옥수수는 토마토보다 急激한 蒸散速度의 低下를 보였고, 토마토는 甚한 弗素阻害를 받았다. 이러한 結果는 옥수수가 氣孔을 閉鎖한데 기인하였다 할 수 있겠다. Fluoride inhibited photosynthesis rates of intact leaves. When detached leaves of soybean, barley, maize and tomato were fumigated with HF or supplied with KF through their cut bases by transpiration stream, photosynthesis rates were depressed. The repression of photosynthesis in maize leaves was more pronounced than those in soybean, barley and tomato leaves. The transpiration rate of maize leaf was also repressed during the application of KF while that of tomato leaf was hardly affected. These results indicate that the increased fluoride inhibition of maizephotosynthesis is caused by stomatal closure.
Valsalva Aneurysm Filled with Thrombi Mimicking a Cardiac Tumor

A Valsalva aneurysm filled with thrombi can be difficult to diagnose, because it mimics a cardiac tumor. Both cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and transesophageal echocardiogram (TEE) were performed on a patient who showed a low-echoic mass located between the atrial septum and the non-coronary sinus. Based on MRI findings allowing tissue characterization and the accurate location of the mass and the TEE findings of an irregular surface of the mass and a partial defect in the edge of the non-coronary sinus, we diagnosed the mass as a thrombosed Valsalva aneurysm that had perforated the inter-atrial septum. The operative findings coincided with the preoperative di-agnosis. Both MRI and TEE are useful for diagnosing this condition.

In order to provide informations for the earth's deep interior and the earthquake mechanism, we have been operating the three components of Streckeisen Seismometers at Pohang Observatory, Korea, as a part of a long period seismic network (POSEIDON) in the northwestern Pacific now under construction. The recording system is specially designed to be able to obtain outputs of broad band and wide dynamic range; BRB (Broad Band), LP (Long Period), and VLP (Very Long Period) output. The triggered BRB and LP signals are digitized with the sampling intervals of 0.1 and 0.4 second, respectively. The lowpass filtered VLP output is digitized and recorded contineously with the sampling interval of 10 seconds. About 120 regional and teleseismic events have been successfully recorded for one and half year since late March, 1991. As a preliminary study, eight events of them are analyzed to determine Rayleigh wave dispersion curves in the period range of 20 to 300 seconds for the continental and oceanic paths. The curves are compared with the typical continental and oceanic ones to discuss the earth's deep interior.
