      • Platycodon grandiflorum root-derived saponins attenuate atopic dermatitis-like skin lesions via suppression of NF-kB and STAT1 and activation of Nrf2/ARE-mediated heme oxygenase-1

        Purpose: The consequences of precipitously rising allergic skin inflammation rates worldwide have accelerated the risk of atopic dermatitis (AD). Natural product-based agents with good efficacy and low risk of side effects offer promising prevention and treatment strategies for inflammation-related diseases. We have already reported that Platycodon grandiflorum root-derived saponins (Changkil saponins, CKS) have many pharmacological effects, including anti-inflammatory and anti-allergic effects, but its influence on AD remains unclear. Therefore, we evaluated the inhibitory effect of CKS, mainly platycodin D, on AD-like skin symptoms in mice and the possible mechanisms in cells. Methods: Mice were sensitized and challenged with 2,4-dinitrochlorobenzene (DNCB). Four weeks after challenge, mice were treated with oral administration of CKS for 4 weeks. In addition, cells were used to evaluate the effect of CKS, mainly platycodin D, on the TARC expression regulated mechanism. Results: CKS attenuated DNCB-induced dermatitis severity, serum levels of IgE and TARC, and mRNA expression of TARC, TNF-α, IFN-γ, IL-4, IL-5, and IL-13 in mice. Histopathological examination showed reduced thickness of the epidermis/dermis and dermal infiltration of inflammatory cells and mast cells in the ears. Moreover, CKS and platycodin D inhibited TNF-α/IFN-γ-induced TARC expression through the suppression of NF-κB and STAT1 and induction of Nrf2/ARE-mediated hemeoxygenase-1 (HO-1) expression in cells. Conclusion: We suggest that CKS and platycodin D inhibited the development of AD-like skin symptoms by regulating cytokine mediators and may be an effective alternative therapy for AD-like skin symptoms.ⓒ2014 Elsevler Gmbh.         CTX-M형 ESBL 생성 비장티푸스성 살모넬라의 특성

        Background: Extended-spectrum ß-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Salmonella have been increasingly reported worldwide. ESBL-producing Salmonella is of particular concern since children cannot be treated with quinolones. This study was conducted to determine the phenotypic and genetic characteristics of ESBL-producing Salmonella in a tertiary hospital. Materials and Methods: Four clinical ESBL-producing isolates of non-typhoidal Salmonella were collected during 2001 to 2009. Antimicrobial susceptibility was determined by disk diffusion test and VITEK-II system. ESBL production was tested by ESBL phenotypic confirmatory test. TEM, SHV, CTX-M1, CTX-M2, CTX-M8, and CTX-M9 type ESBL genes were detected by PCR amplification, and PCR products were subjected to direct sequencing Results: Phenotypic confirmatory test showed that 4 of the 300 non-typhoidal Salmonella isolates were ESBL-producing: 3 S. Enteritidis and 1 S. Typhimurium. All 4 isolates were recovered during the past 1 year period. All 3 S. Enteritidis harbored CTX-M-15, while the S. Typhimurium harbored CTX-M-14. All CTX-M-15-producing S. Enteritidis isolates showed resistance both to cefotaxime and ceftazidime, while the CTX-M-14-producing S. Enteritidis were resistant only to cefotaxime. Conclusions: ESBL-producing nontyphoidal Salmonella has emerged recently and the type of ESBL has switched from TEM and SHV to CTX-M.

      • 여자 체조 이단평행봉 연기에 대한 분석

        The purpose of the study is to help Korean women gymnasts get better grades in the international sports arena by understanding the world trends in this field based on the analyses of performances in the parallel bars, the weakest event among the four Korean women's gymnastic events. Value, connection value by which bonus points can be obtained, and start value were analyzed, excluding demerit marks in general performances, impressions, and art. The results of the study are as follows. In the analysis of value, the top four athletes implemented more parts than the average level while the four Korean athletes achieved less than the average level. According to the analysis of value parts D and E, the top four athletes received an average of 0.675 bonus points while the Koreans got 0.15, showing a great difference among them. The analysis of connection value by which bonus points can be obtained also showed stark contrast between the top four athletes and the Koreans marking bonus points of 0.50 and 0.075, respectively. The average start value of the top four athletes was 9.95, 0.925 higher than that of the Korean athletes of 9.025, which can be considered as a big difference. It is suggested that Korean athletes should focus on conducting high level of value parts and connection value to make greater achievements in the international sports arena, considering general demerit points were not included in this study. They are also needed to be confident in order to act to the best of their abilities.

        Erythromycin 내성 포도알균의 유도형 Macrolide-Lincosamide-Streptogramin B (MLS_(B)) 내성 표현형 빈도

        Background: Inducible MLS_(B) (macrolide-lincosamide-streptogramin B) resistance in staphylococci is not detected by standard susceptibility test methods. Failure to identify inducible MLS_(B) resistance may lead to clinical failure during clindamycin therapy. We determined the prevalence of inducible MLS_(B) resistance in erythromycin-resistant staphylococcal isolates. Materials and Methods: We evaluated all 2,792 non-duplicate staphylococcal strains: 1,402 Staphylococcus aureus and 1,390 coagulase-negative staphylococci (CoNS) isolated from May 2008-June 2009 at one-unoversity hospital. Testing for inducible MLS_(B) was accomplished by the disk approximation test (D-test) in accordance with the recommendations of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). Results: Of the 2,792 staphylococcal isolates, 892 S. aureus isolates and 740 CoNS isolates were resistant to erythromycin. Among the 892 erythromycin-resistant S. aureus isolates, the overall prevalence of inducible MLS_(B) was 21.3% (16.2% of MRSA and 76.3% of methicillin-susceptible S. aureus). Among the 740 erythromycinresistant CoNS isolates, the overall prevalence of inducible MLS_(B) was 16.5% (16.0% of methicillin-resistant CoNS and 18.7% of methicillin-susceptible CoNS). The D-test was positive in 88.8% of S. aureus and 28.4% of CoNS isolates, which were erythromycin-resistant and clindamycin-susceptible. Conclusions: There are some variations in the prevalence of inducible MLS_(B) resistance in clinical staphylococcal isolates. It is important that clinical laboratories report inducible MLS_(B) resistance for erythromycin-resistant and clindamycinsusceptible staphylococcal isolates.

        Duodeno-colonic fistula is an enterocolonic fistula that occurs as a complication of Crohn`s disease. Symptoms of duodeno colonic fistula are similar to those of Crohn`s disease, such as weight loss and diarrhea. The treatment of choice is surgery, although medical treatment may also be considered. However, surgery is recommended when all available medical therapies have been ineffective. In this case, we report a secondary duodeno-colonic fistula due to Crohn`s disease that was temporarily managed by an endoscopic procedure with a detached endoloop and hemoclips as a bridging therapy to final surgical repair.

        We have been used for the Pt catalyst of cathode electrode in fuel cell. Weak point of Pt electrode are easily deactivated by the CO poisoning which are producing in reaction at electrode. Recent, researchers have developed cathode electrode to avoid the CO poisoning in electrode using the Pt-alloy or another novel metal. We now report Au-carbene complexes as an Au-electrode precursor derived from the reaction of the carbene with the ClAu(PPh₃) complex in THF/MeOH.

      • 고속분기기 노스가동크로싱의 성능 및 유지보수 효율화를 위한 개량 방안에 관한 연구

        고속철도에서 차량의 방향을 전환시키는 고속분기기는 궤도용품 중에서 가장 중요한 핵심 기술로 분류된다. 고속분기기는 F18.5번 이상이 해당되며 국내에는 F18.5, F26, F46이 주로 사용되고 있다. 수량은 고속1단계(서울~대구)에 91틀, 고속2단계(대구~부산) 37틀, 호남고속(오송~광주) 48틀이 사용되어 총 176여틀이 현장에 적용되어 있다. 2004년 개통한 고속1단계 자갈도상용의 경우 사용기간이 10여년이 경과함에따라 부품별 교체 주기가 도래하고 있고 이에따른 유지보수력이 증가하고 있는 실정이다. 노스가동크로싱은 약 90여가지의 부품으로 조합된 가장 복잡한 구조로써 이의 유지보수에는 많은 시간과 전문기술 인력이 필요한 실정이다. 이에 성능을 향상시키면서 유지보수가 간편한 노스가동 크로싱 구조의 개발에 관한 연구를 수행하였다. A study on the performance improvement of the high speed turnout’s movable nose crossing and maintenance efficiency. the high speed turnout that converts the direction of the rolling stock is classified as the most important core technology out of all railway products. F18.5 and above are applied to the high speed turnout, and F26 and F46 are mainly used domestically. For quantity, 100 sets are applied to high speed line phase 1(Seoul~Daegu), 45 sets are each applied to phase 2(Daegu~Busan) and Ho-nam high speed line (OSong~GwangJu), which means that a total of approximately 190 sets are being applied on site. In case of the ballast track of high speed line phase 1 which opened in 2004, the exchange period for each component has arrived as its use of term has passed 10 years and accordingly, the maintenance for it is on the increase. the movable nose crossing has a very complex structure as it is combined with approximately 90 components, so a lot of time and manpower would be required. Therefore, we performed a study on the improvement of the movable nose crossing structure for simple maintenance by enhancing its performance.

      • Petal-Inspired Diffractive Grating on a Wavy Surface: Deterministic Fabrications and Applications to Colorizations and LED Devices

        <P>Interestingly, the petals of flowering plants display unique hierarchical structures, in which surface relief gratings (SRGs) are conformably coated on a curved surface with a large radius of curvature (hereafter referred to as wavy surface). However, systematic studies on the interplay between the diffractive modes and the wavy surface have not yet been reported, due to the absence of deterministic nanofabrication methods capable of generating combinatorially diverse SRGs on a wavy surface. Here, by taking advantage of the recently developed nano fabrication composed of evaporative assembly and photofluidic holography inscription, we were able to achieve (i) combinatorially diverse petal-inspired SRGs with controlled curvatures, periodicities, and dimensionalities, and (ii) systematic optical studies of the relevant diffraction modes. Furthermore, the unique diffraction modes of the petal-inspired SRGs were found to be useful for the enhancement of the outcoupling efficiency of an organic light emitting diode (OLED). Thus, our systematic analysis of the interplay between the diffractive modes and the petal-inspired SRGs provides a basis for making more informed decisions in the design of petal-inspired diffractive grating and its applications to optoelectronics.</P>
