This study is aimed at the establishment and examination of deterministic model and stochastic model to monthly streamflow. In this study, the stream morphological characteristics of the Nakdong river basin, which is one of the major basins of Korea, was determined quantitively by the topographical map. In the analysis, monthly streamflow records of Nakdong river(Dongchon, Nakdong and Jindong) were used. Modelling processes are summarized as follow; from a simplified equation of water balance on a watershed a regression model for monthly streamflow using the variables of rainfall, pan evaporation, and previous-month rainfall was formulated. And predictions were derived from the stepwise regression analysis of watershed characteristics. It was also possible to explain geographic influences on streamflow through those pridiction equation. In the stochastic processes, monthly streamflows were simulated by the Thomas Fiering model and Hamonic model.

Catechol-O-methyltransferase (COMT; EC 2.1.1.6) is the enzyme which catalyzes the transfer of methyl group to the catecholamine neurotransmitters from its methyl donor S-adenosyl-L-methionine. Partially purified COMT from rat liver has been used to measure the concentration of catecholamines in the blood through solvent extraction and thin layer chromatography after converting ^3H-methyl derivatives of catecholamines. To improve this inconvenient and fluctuating method, an attempt was made to use COMT gene for the measurement of catecholamines. Specific primers, COMT5P (5'-TGC TCA GAG GTG CTT TGA AG-3') and COMT3P (5'-GGA GCC GCA GAA GGT CA G-3'), were used to amplify COMT gene from human placenta cDNA library. The amplified COMT gene through 35 cycles of polymerase chain reaction was cloned into T-vector and the nucleotide sequences are determined by automatic sequencer. Human COMT has two common variants, a thermostable high activity form which has valine at amino acid 158 and a thermolabile low activity form which Has methionine at the same position. The cloned COMT gene in this study has both variants. Clone 4 and 5 have valine at amino acid 158 (guanine at nucleotide 472) and clone 1-3 have methionine at this site (adenine at nucleotide 472). In addition to this, there are other DNA polymorphisms in COMT gene at nucleotide 101, 102 (amino acid 34, a structural mutation cysteine/serine) and nucleotide 186 (a silent mutation). All of the clones have cysteine at amino acid 34 (guanine and adenine at nucleotides 101 and 102) and cytosine at nucleotide 186 except clone 3 which has thymine at this nucleotide. Clone 4 and 5 are thermostable high activity variants, suggesting being more useful for the measurement of catecholamines after expressing the gene.

Background : Communite-acquired peumonia (CAP) is one of the leading causes of mortality and morbidity. Despite progress in diagnostic techniques and treatments, management of pneumonia remains challenging, because the precise etiology remains uncertain in as many as 49% of cases. The limitaions of identifying etiologic agents make it necessary to use empiric antibiotics in almost all patients, and furthermore emergence of antibiotic-resistant organisms pose difficulties to the selection of an empiric antibiotic regimen. For the optimal choice of empirical antibiotics, we should know the frequency of etiologic agents and antimicrobial resistance rates in the community. Methods : A prospective multicenter study of community-acquired pneumonia in Korea was carried out between May 1997 and April 2000. The microbiologic diagnosis was based on the results of sputum culture, blood culture and pleural culture. Results : Five hundred eighty eight cases of community-acquired peumonia in 562 patients admitted to the hospitals. The mean age was 59.9 with male predominance (58.3%), and 370 (63%) had underlyin gillness. The etiologic agents were identified in 38.3%, and the list of individual agents, in decreasing order, was Streprococcus pneumoniae (21.7%), Klebsiella pneumoniae (14.8%) Pseudomonas aeruginosa (9.8%), Staphylococcus aureus (9.5%), viridans group streptococci (5.7%), Enterobacter cloacae (4.2%), Hemophillus Influenza (3.8%), The rates of admission to the intensive care unit was 10.4%. The motality was 7.1%. Susceptible rates of S. pneumoniae to penicillin was 36.6% and showed multidrug resistant. Forty percents of S. aureus were methicillin-resistant S. aureus. K. penumoniae were susceptible to cephalosporin and quinolone. Conclusion : In Korea, S.pneumoniae is the most important agent causing community-acquired pneumonia. Susceptible rates of S. pneumoniae to penicillin was 36.6% and showed multidrug resistant. Gram negative bacteria such as K. pneumoniae, P. aeruginosa showed high incidence when compared with that of other countries. Most of them had underlying diseases including bronchiectasis and chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases. (Korean J Infect Dis 33:1∼7, 2001)
Hedgehog signaling regulates proliferation of prostate cancer cells via stathmin1.

<P>Hedgehog (Hh) signaling is an essential pathway in embryonic development of prostate. Hh also plays roles in the proliferation of progenitor cells and cancer cells of adult prostate. However, how Hh signaling contributes to carcinogenesis of prostate is poorly understood. Stathmin1 is a microtubule-regulating protein that plays an important role in the assembly and disassembly of the mitotic spindle. Stathmin1 is expressed in normal developing mouse prostate and in prostate cancer. The expression pattern of stathmin1 is similar to that of Shh in prostate development and cancer, suggesting a connection between these two proteins. In this study, we examined the relationship between stathmin1 and Hh signaling. Here, we show that stathmin1 expression is regulated by Hh signaling in prostate cancer cells. Cyclopamine, a specific inhibitor of Hh signaling, reduced the expression of stathmin1 in prostate cancer cells. However, the Shh peptide induced stathmin1 expression. Overexpression of Gli1 further confirmed the relationship. Co-expression of stathmin1 and Patched 1, a receptor for Hh signaling was observed in prostate cancer tissues. Cyclopamine and stathmin1 siRNA both decreased proliferation of prostate cancer cells but did not produce an additive effect, suggesting a common pathway. These results suggest that Hh signaling regulates proliferation of prostate cancer cells by controlling stathmin1 expression.</P>

We report a case with mesenteric metastasis of hepatocellular carcinoma after hepatic resection. A 54-years-old female was received the right hepatic segmentectomy due to hepatocellular carcinoma without evidence of metastasis. Exploratory laparotomy confirmed the mesenteric metastasis of primary hepatocellular carcinoma six months after the operation and we reviewed the literature.
A conceptual framework for energy security evaluation of power sources in South Korea

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Due to the limited energy resources and isolated power system network, an energy security (ES) which reflects such factors as a stable energy supply, energy efficiency, and environmental protection has significance in Korea in terms of sustainable development.</P> <P>This study evaluated the ES in South Korea for fuel options in power generation sector (coal, nuclear, natural gas, oil, and renewables) focusing on indicators of supply reliability, economy of electricity generation, environmental sustainability, and technology complementarity.</P> <P>The ES indicators suggested in this study are anticipated to contribute to establishing an ES policy based on a comprehensive understanding of the ES status in South Korea. In the future, it will be necessary to establish specific scenarios for holding out regional conflicts and post-2020 climate change conventions and conduct realistic and dynamic analyses. In addition, it is essential to draw comprehensive indicators by incorporating the results from individual indicators and produce policy data regarding the priority of energy sources in terms of ES in general.</P> <P>This study has an unusual position in the aspect of the quantitative analysis contribution to the ES of various energy sources by the microscopic parameters together with the time series changes of ES.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> A model that contributes to national energy security by energy source is proposed. </LI> <LI> Renewables, shown improve gradually, are beneficial in SS, EC and IO indicators. </LI> <LI> Nuclear, shown improve gradually too, is beneficial in GH and TC indicators. </LI> <LI> Fossil fuels such as LNG and coal have been improved in terms of indicators GH and SA. </LI> <LI> This model is expected in finding out the security enhancement factor by energy source. </LI> </UL> </P>
