In recent years, gonorrhea has been pandemic and remains one of the most common STDs in the world, especially in developing countries. For the detection of a more effective therapeutic regimen and assessing the prevalence of Penicillinase Producing Neisseria gonorrhoeae(PPNG), we have been trying to study the patients who have visited the Venereal Disease Clinic of Choong-Ku Public Health Center in Seoul since 1980 by menas of the chromogenic cephalosporin method. In 1998, 93 strians of N. genorrhoeae were isolated, among which 60(64.5%) were PPNG. The prevalence of PPNG in Seoul, which had been decreased to 39% in 1996 after a peak of 74.3% in 1993, is increased to 64.5% in 1998.

Quercetin-3-O-${\alpha}$-$\small{L}$-rhamnopyranosyl($1{\rightarrow}2$)-O-${\alpha}$-$\small{L}$-rhamnopyranoside (QDR) was isolated from the remaining underground parts of Curcuma longa after harvesting the medicinal parts, and the antioxidant activities in vitro and lifespan-extending effect of QDR were elucidated using the Caenorhabditis elegans model system. The 1,1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical scavenging effect of QDR showed similar potent activities in comparison with vitamin C. QDR also showed strong superoxide quenching activities as measured by the riboflavin- and xanthine-originated superoxide quenching activities. QDR demonstrated potent lifespan extension of worms under normal culture condition. Subsequently, the protective effect of QDR on the stress conditions such as thermal and oxidative stresses was determined. In the case of heat stress, QDR-treated worms exhibited enhanced survival rate, as compared to control worms. In addition, QDR-fed worms lived longer than control worms under oxidative stress induced by paraquat. To verify the possible mechanism of QDR-mediated increased lifespan and stress resistance of worms, we investigated whether QDR might alter superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity and intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) levels. Our results showed that QDR was able to elevate SOD activity of worms and reduce intracellular ROS accumulation in a dose-dependent manner.

Here in this study, we isolated 1,2,3,4,6-penta-O-galloyl-β-D-glucose (PGG) from Curcuma longa L. and elucidated the lifespanextending effect of PGG using Caenorhabditis elegans model system. In the present study, PGG demonstrated potent lifespan extension of worms under normal culture condition. Then, we determined the protective effects of PGG on the stress conditions such as thermal and oxidative stress. 본 연구는 한반도 주변지역 장거리 이동 대기오염물질의 특성파악과 중국으로부터 이동되어 오는 장거리 이동 대기오염물질이 한반도 대기질에 미치는 영향을 평가하고 그 원인 규명을 통하여 과학적인 저감대책을 수립하는 것이 최종 목적이다. 이러한 목적을 위하여 항공기를 이용하여 서해 상공에서 대기오염물질의 측정과 집중측정 기간에 대한 상층기상 및 종관 분석을 수행하였다. 1997~2009년까지 측정기간 중 서해상에 영향을 준 기류의 48%가 Ⅱ권역의 영향이었고 기류의 이동경로 별로 뚜렷한 농도 차이를 보였다. 그 외 권역은 1.09~3.78 ppb의 범위를 보였고 Ⅱ, Ⅲ권역 사례의 7~25%, 4~15%에 불과하여 권역 Ⅱ, Ⅲ을 영향을 SO₂ 고농도 사례의 주요 원인으로 생각할 수 있다. 또한 권역별 기류에 따른 이동량을 분석한 결과, SO₂의 경우 측정기간 중 유입량은 유출량의 약 5배로 서해안이 중국으로부터 이동하는 SO₂의 직접적인 영향을 받고 있는 것으로 나타났다. To estimate the long-range transboundary air pollutants, aircraft measurements, upper and synoptic atmosphere analysis, and modeling have been performed. Flight measurement was carried out over the West Sea of Korea when westerly winds to identify the impact of air pollutants from China on air quality in Korea and to estimate the transboundary influx of air pollutants. In this year, it was found that long-range air pollutants were transported in various patterns. On April 17, a high concentration appeared in two different layers, while on October 16 a high concentration occurred in all sections due to the stagnation of the pollutants. As a result of back trajectory analysis by region, 48 percent of the total air currents affecting air quality over the West Sea during the observation periods (1997~2009) came from Region Ⅱ, with the concentrations of each transport track distinctively different. The modeling was conducted using MM5, SMOKE, and CMAQ. The impact of long-range air pollutants on local air quality was examined through emissions sensitivity analysis for the spring (Mar.~May) and Autumn (Sep.~Nov.) of 2009. In spring, about 18~65% of the total PM10 concentration was influenced by long-range transported air pollutants, while in autumn from 11 to 51% of the PM₁? concentration was affected. These results will be better estimated through the constant improvement of emission data. For the accuracy of the modeling work, a preliminary study should be done first, including improvement of emission inventories, identification of complex aerosol and photochemical reaction mechanism in the atmosphere, and establishment of contribution assessment methodology.

Background: Although it is generally accepted that cystic lesions in the pancreas (CLPs) 3 cm or less in size and without features suggesting malignancy can be managedconservatively with follow-up, the optimal duration and interval of follow-up for CLPs is not yet well established. Methods: Patients with CLPs 3 cm or less in size and without features suggesting malignancy received follow-up with computed tomography at 6, 12, 18, and 24 months and then per 12 months. A retrospective analysis with prospectively collected data was performed. Results: A total of 205 patients with CLPs detected from 2004 to 2009 (initial mean size, 1.8±0.7 cm) received follow-up during the median period of 56.6 months. Within the fi rst 12 months of follow-up, no patients experienced the growth of cyst and three patients (1.5%) underwent surgery for the presence of symptoms related to CLPs. 11 patients (5.4%) experienced the growth of cyst after 5 years of follow-up. A total of 18 patients underwent surgery during follow-up and four malignant cysts were detected. Overall rate of malignant progression during follow-up was 2.0%. The malignant progression occurred after 48 months and 60 months of follow-up in one and three patients, respectively. Conclusions: Long-term follow-up more than 5 year should be performed because of the potential for malignant transformation of CLPs. The 12 months interval of follow- up for asymptomatic CLPs might be suffi cient in clinical practice.
Genistein from Vigna angularis Extends Lifespan in Caenorhabditis elegans

The seed of Vigna angularis has long been cultivated as a food or a folk medicine in East Asia. Genistein (4′,5,7-trihydroxyisoflavone), a dietary phytoestrogen present in this plant, has been known to possess various biological properties. In this study, we investigated the possible lifespan-extending effects of genistein using Caenorhabditis elegans model system. We found that the lifespan of nematode was significantly prolonged in the presence of genistein under normal culture condition. In addition, genistein elevated the survival rate of nematode against stressful environment including heat and oxidative conditions. Further studies demonstrated that genistein-mediated increased stress tolerance of nematode could be attributed to enhanced expressions of stress resistance proteins such as superoxide dismutase (SOD-3) and heat shock protein (HSP-16.2). Moreover, we failed to find genistein-induced significant change in aging-related factors including reproduction, food intake, and growth, indicating genistein exerts longevity activity independent of affecting these factors. Genistein treatment also led to an up-regulation of locomotory ability of aged nematode, suggesting genistein affects healthspan as well as lifespan of nematode. Our results represent that genistein has beneficial effects on the lifespan of C. elegans under both of normal and stress condition via elevating expressions of stress resistance proteins.
