Recently, the importance of ‘art education’ has not only surfaced as a worldwide issue due to its role in the development of imagination and creativity, which are indispensable features for ‘the cultivation of talents with creative convergence’, but also is being focused as a solution to the lack of character education that induces serious social problems nowadays. The grounds for the increased expectation from art education is that the ‘aesthetic impressions’ of arts may play a significant role in resolving the problems caused by lack of character, and in serving the cultivation of creative talents needed by the society. Hence, the ultimate objective of art education should not be in the functional development of artistic aptitude nor mode of expression, but the restoration of aesthetic impressions through arts.
Art manifests a form of disposition expressing the aesthetic impression of its creator. Art works not only allow us to experience the aesthetic impression of the artist, but also allows us to carry out reflective and self-corrective thinking. As such, the restoration of aesthetic impression through art education promotes higher-order thinking that enables holistic character education.
This paper explored for a music-oriented integrative arts education program that targets higher-order thinking to enable character education. Until now, arts education has been focused on creative thinking directly related to imagination and development of creativity. However, if creative thinking is fostered without association with caring thinking, the education may be an immoral one. Furthermore, critical thinking that allows making judgment with clear standards and values must be also fostered to have the creative art works be appreciated. Accordingly, this paper has established its purpose to search for a integrative arts program that will foster moral thinking based on the higher-order thinking put forth by Matthew A. Lipman whose concept was derived from John Dewey’s reflective thinking.
Arts education is generally divided into ‘education for arts’ and ‘education through arts’; arts education in Korea is mostly ‘education for arts’. This is to acquire expertise in the field of arts for promoting artists. On the other hand, ‘education through arts’ refers to an integrative experience the realm of arts with arts or art works as the means. Education through arts allows a quality experience where one may acknowledge the similarity and correlation among artistic genre and face aesthetic impression through arts. Such quality experiences advance higher-order thinking blended with creative thinking that facilitates self-understanding and expressing, caring thinking that facilitates understanding of others, and critical thinking that facilitates judgment of values.
In order to establish the foundation of the music-oriented arts education philosophy suggested by this paper, the arts education program of Orff-Shulwerk and Lincoln Center Institute which was developed from the philosophies of Carl Orff’s classical naturalism and John Dewey’s American naturalism.
Orff asserts that music education should begin with the elementals that come from human nature. Orff was able to find the musical elemental that integrated language, movement and music from movement and language. Orff’s integrative arts education allows non-art majors to appreciate the amusement within the arts, and art majors to be comprehend the fundamental meanings of arts. Orff’s teaching method, which takes a serious view on human nature and endures self-understanding and ?reflection, and deliberation, displays that character education through aesthetic impression of arts is possible.
John Dewey, who developed the classical naturalism into the American naturalism, asserted that daily experience underwent aesthetic experience to become artistic experience, and that the changes in aesthetic sentiment are growth and education themselves. Derived from John Dewey’s experience arts philosophy, LCI is currently developing and employing arts education program called ‘Social Imagination, the arts & education’ led by Maxine Greene. Their objective in education is imagination. As Dewey’s objective in arts education is human-person, LCI’s objective is also promoting human-persons with motivation on enhanced imagination and creativity.
However, even though LCI’s imaginative capacities or Orff’s Orff-Shulwerk are education that strengthen creative and caring thinking, but they do lack critical thinking through arts education, which requires supplementation. To expand the aesthetic impression in arts education, creative, caring, and critical thinking must be balanced.
The process of reaching the completion of arts can be deemed as the process of the growth of aesthetic sentiment, and the process of growth of aesthetic sentiment in life is the process of completing character through reflective thinking. Therefore, the objective of integrative arts education lies in the aesthetic impression that completes the character. Reflective thinking that arrives at aesthetic impression can be perceived as a moral thinking. Moral thinking must be higher-order thinking balancing multidimensional thinking that include critical, creative and caring thinking. Since arts and morality have the same attribute of aesthetic impression, cultivation of higher-order thinking is considered promising.
As such, the model of music-oriented integrative arts education through community of inquiry is as follows. First, cultivation of higher-order thinking reaching aesthetic impression was established as the objective of the education. Growth by means of aesthetic experience, in other words, the restoration of aesthetic impression to arrive at self-understanding and moral thinking is the educational objective of John Dewey. Therefore, Matthew A. Lipman’s higher-order thinking was set as the objective of music-oriented integrative arts education, which systematically developed caring thinking which enables restoration of the aesthetic impression put forth by John Dewey. Such internalization must be the basis of moral thinking for not only arts education, but for all education.
Second, as for the method of integrative arts education, artistic community of inquiry was proposed. The ultimate objective of the community, assuming that the reflective thinking and deliberation through aesthetic experience is, in fact, higher-order thinking, is that the activities are artistic. Hence, activities of community of inquiry were deemed adequate as the method of music-oriented integrative arts education. Because the purpose of a community of inquiry is not to attain ultimate knowledge, but to continuously modify and improve the faults to find and maintain balance, there must be a balance among critical thinking, creative thinking, and caring thinking.
As for the method of conducting artistic inquiries, a four-stage method was set up for the community: the first stage is primordial experience, second is inquiry of the contest, third is artistic experience, and fourth is reflection and assessment.
Third, the inquiries were composed of arts education contents that enable aesthetic experience. This allows for integrative connection among music-oriented art genre, and with the primordial musical theories of Orff’s physical expression and language as the foundation of the integrative arts education, and Kandinsky’s music visualization was systemized as the method of visualization for this paper.
Establishing the process of daily experience developing into a completed art experience in Dewey’s experience arts philosophy as the philosophical ground, the composition of educational stages were instituted as follows. As for daily experiences, the contents were composed of recognition of physiological language and rhythm where the learner could actively participate in the play and the imagination is set in motion. As for artistic experiences, improvisation, visualization of artistic experience, and writing were composed to form individual or community narrative to stimulate self-reflection and contribute to higher-order thinking.
Artistic community of inquiry implies inquiries on arts as the subject of the inquisition. However, if reaching higher-order thinking through aesthetic experiences in daily life is, in fact, moral thinking and character education, the integrative arts education, where aesthetic experiences are the key activities, is an adequate fit for the community’s activity. Community of inquiry promotes aesthetic impression in human life, and should practice activities with internalized aesthetic impression. If that is the case, rather than discussions and writings, artistic activities that more explicitly displays embodied aesthetic impression. Hence, artistic inquiries of music-oriented integrative arts education are the most adequate activities in the process of completing idealistic personality, as encouraged by the community. In order to become the education that enables character education, the composition must place more weight on the process of changes of aesthetic sentiment, not just the ending results.
