Conventional arts education was about fostering professional artists by transmitting knowledge on arts and performance skills through various means such as music lessons. As creativity fostered by arts has been recognized as an important resource to enhance social competitiveness, arts education has become something for everyone, encouraging him to express his artistic imagination and his true self in a creative way. This semantic change gave birth to a new concept called "teaching artists."
The objective of this study is to compare teaching artists training programs offered by foreign institutes with those introduced in Korea as a part of government policy to vitalize arts and culture education, to point out problems with the Korean programs, and to make suggestions on how to improve the current training programs to be in line with global trends in arts education.
This study first examines arts education policies of France, the U.K., the U.S., and Korea. Then, problems encountered in teaching artist training programs offered in Korea are pointed out using a case study on professional development programs for teaching artists at Lincoln Center Institute for the Arts in Education in the U.S., which is widely benchmarked by Korean institutes, and plans for improvement are suggested.
This study makes several suggestions to improve the teaching artists training programs in Korea. First, selection criteria and selection process should take the concept and roles of teaching artists into account. Second, training courses should be designed to enable teaching artists themselves to enjoy and experience the arts. Third, training courses for teaching artists should be unique and closely related to the philosophy of arts education embodied in each institute that offers the program. Fourth, a variety of programs are necessary for music teaching artists in various fields, who are equipped with expertise.
