The arts have long been far away from life and have been recognized that education for the arts is for particular persons. And education for the arts has stayed outside main stream, not giving direct influences on a daily life. But as industry rapidly developed and was divided, society required new capacity such as creativity, perception, problem-solving, construction action to people who live in the 21st century. Accordingly, social needs for education for the arts have been rapidly expanded. Present education of the arts has become 'education amid life' essential which everyone should enjoy for abundant life as human going beyond public education. But in case of our country, compared to its quantitative expansion, qualitative aspects show problems: cultivation of specialist for education of the arts for development of creative and effective class is not enough, and systematical system to support such cultivation is still poor. Under this situation, Aesthetic experience education which has been studied and practiced in Lincoln Center Institute for the Art in Education for 35 years suggests many implications and possibility to apply to our environment of education of the arts.
Aesthetic experience education of LCI is one of successful program for education of the arts which is spreading to many countries. With background of educational philosophy of Maxine Greene, a permanently stationed philosopher in LCI, they have been constructing systematic educational methods and operation system. Aesthetic Experience Education emphasizes aesthetic value of the arts in the course of education but is cautious on becoming a tool for other school subjects. And they see that capacity necessary in the course of multi-layer creation of the arts has a direct relationship with capacity necessary to live a life. So they explore educational effect of various fields through education of the arts. And all such goals are achieved in the very systematic and phased class activity which is focused on learners. That is, the largest characteristic of LCI educational methods is that they designed in detail and made system for environment where learners can be naturally committed to class activity.
This study investigated philosophy and methods of Aesthetic experience education of LCI, and tried to develop class guidance plan for Aesthetic experience education which can be implemented in the class in our country. Processes of thus study are as follows.
First, before development of class guidance plan, educational philosophy and goal of LCI which is background of Aesthetic experience education was investigated. And then, the author studied class method focusing on core educational concepts and 10 Rubrics for Capacities for Imaginative Learning. Second, to develop class guidance plan for Aesthetic experience education which can be implemented in the class in our country, mask drama 《BAHNHOF》 made by director Baek Nam-young was selected and class guidance plan for aesthetic experience was developed according to development procedure for class guidance plan suggested by LCI. Third, developed class guidance plan was applied to learners and the resulted educational effect was analyzed. Fourth, by integrating all above study, this study intended to suggest future direction of Korean education of the arts and how educational philosophy and methods of LCI should be applied to our education of the arts. Furthermore, this study tried to provide guidelines for effective teaching methods which can be applied to actual classroom environment for present teaching artists in each artistic field in our country. And this study tried to provide issues for further study.
Aesthetic experience education of LCI known through this study showed that the education has significant educational effect for the learners in our country. Especially, even learners who contacted the artistic works for the first time understood creation process of artists and voluntarily explored through process of Art Making. It was interpreted that characteristics of Aesthetic experience education stimulated active interest and participation of learners in problem solving - Aesthetic experience education has systematic and phased class method, and activity each phase has a close systematic relationship each other. And class method through 'Reflection' and 'Questioning' provided an opportunity for one to continuously remind class process and to deeply explore a problem.
This study has its own limitation in inducing much results because Aesthetic experience education was operated only one time as a model. But though only operation of one time, its effect was very significant. Accordingly, it is thought that it is necessary to study Aesthetic experience education, introduce it fit to domestic environment, and utilize it under sustainable and long term goal. And discussion on these is suggested - network with organizations related to the arts which can supply good artistic works continuously, development of Aesthetic experience education, cultivation methods of Teaching Artists.
