Fineness Modulus is a term used as an index to the fineness of sand. It is well - known that the modulus distribution of sand plays an important role in achieving the desired properties of mortar. The maximum size of sand is also important parameter in mortar. These parameters affect workability, strength and unitweight of mortar. In tills study, different sand gradings were used to investigate effects of fineness moduli of sand for examination about the workability, strength and unit weight characteristics of cement mortar. Two kinds of sands with various size distribution and three kinds of fine aggregates with the similar particle size distribution (Sieve No.16~30, No.30~50, No.50~100) were used. Water-cement ratio (W/C) of mortar mix was kept constant for all the trial mixes with sand of different fineness modulus. Major findings of tills study are: (a) Fine sand with the similar size distribution reduces the workability and unit weight of cement mortar. (b) The compressive strength of mortar is not sensitive to sand grading variations. (c) The compressive strengths at the age of 28 days range from 32.1 to 54.1 MPa. (d) The sand with standard modulus distribution has better positive effects on the properties of the mortar.

The MDD with depressed mood group showed higher odds ratios for LSI and LSA than the sustained depressed mood group. Contrarily, no significant differences were found in LSI and LSA between the MDD group with and without depressed mood. MDD showed significant associations with LSI (AOR=2.83, 95%CI 2.12–3.78) and LSA (AOR=2.17, 95%CI 1.34–3.52), whereas sustained depressed mood showed significant associations with neither LSI nor LSA after adjusting for MDD and other psychiatric comorbidities. N/A Background/Aims: p53 mutation was reported in many studies, but conventional PCR-SSCP protocol using radiolabeled PCR primers or nucleotides to generate a radioactive PCR products is cumbersome to handle. With the aim of a rapid and safe method for single-strand conformation polymorphism(SSCP) analysis of PCR products, we used Mini-SSCP method to detect the mutation of p53 gene of gastric cancer. Methods: In 27 pair of gastric cancer and normal tissues, PCR-SSCP was done with Mini-SSCP, and then Silver sequencing was done. Results: The p53 gene mutation of gastric cancer was found in 10 of 27(37%). Mutation of exon 4, 5 were 2, 5 cases and tnutation of exon 6, 7 mutation were 0, 3 cases respectively. Mutation rate was similar with other reports. P53 mutation was not correlated with stage, lymph node involvement and histological differentiation. Conclusions: Mini-SSCP method, modification of Cold-SSCP, greately increased our accessibility to detect polymorphisms with easiness and safeness. So, it is a useful method to detect genetic mutation. (Korean J Gastroenterol 1997;29:601-609)

The benthic algal community structures of the seaweed biomass, vertical distribution of dominant seaweeds, and species composition were examined on the rocky shores of Ongdo, Jusamdo, and Woejodo Islands, Korea, in August 2006. A total of 68 seaweeds were identified, comprising 5 green, 11 brown, and 52 red algae from the three study sites. The number of species at Ongdo (32 species) was less than that at Jusamdo (45 species) and Woejodo (44 species). Jusamdo exhibited the maximum seaweed biomass (73.99 g dry wt/m2), while the minimum value was found at Woejodo (36.90 g dry wt/m2). On the three islands, coarsely branched forms were the most dominant functional group in terms of species number and biomass among benthic algal species. The dominant species were Gelidium amansii, Chondrus ocellatus, and Chrysymenia wrightii at Ongdo, Sargasum thunbergii, Ulva pertusa, and Sargassum fusiformis at Jusamdo, and U. pertusa, Undaria pinnatifida, and Corallina pilulifera at Woejodo. Perennial seaweeds were abundant at Ongdo (G. amansii and C. ocellatus) and Jusamdo (S. thunbergii and S. fusiformis), whereas the sheet form of U. pertusa was relatively abundant at Woejodo Island.
