      • Quality open access publishing and registration to Directory of Open Access Journals

Xin Bi 한국과학학술지편집인협의회 2017 Science Editing Vol.4 No.1

With the fast development of open access publishing worldwide, Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) as a community-curated online directory that indexes and provides access to high quality, open access, peer-reviewed journals, has been recognized for its high criteria in facilitating high quality open access scholarly publishing and used as the portal for accessing quality open access journals. While the numbers of journal application to be inclusion in DOAJ in Asia are kept increasing dramatically, many editors of these journals are not very clear about the idea or concept of the open access which have been embedded in the application form containing 58 questions falling into several different criteria categories. The very commonly seen misunderstanding of the required item, inaccurate or vague or incomplete and even missing information, poorly organized website, non-transparent process of publishing, especially no open access statement and copyright statement, or conflicts between the policy statements would cause much more communication between the reviewer and the editor and delay the completion of the review. This article gives an in depth introduction to DOAJ criteria and detailed introduction to the general process on how to register to DOAJ, suggestions based on application review also is given for journal editors to better prepare for this application. And it is the most important for editors to keep in mind that to be indexed by DOAJ is not just about filling a form, it is about truly change and adapt to best practices in open access publishing.

The Painting Language of American Neo-Expressionist Painter David Salle

Bi Xin Zhi 국제문화기술진흥원 2023 International Journal of Advanced Culture Technolo Vol.11 No.1

David Salle, born in Norman, Oklahoma in 1952, is the most important and controversial artist of the new-expressionist painting in the United States. His paintings are featured by unique artistic language, and extremely diverse and very ground-breaking expression, which reflect the American society at that time. Besides, he often uses complex image combination with striking colors and forms to attract and touch viewers. In this paper, based on the American new-expressionism, the painting language of David Salle’s works was analysed, in which I found that it can be more intuitively and more profoundly feel the development of new-expressionist painting context and David Salle’s particularity, and more clearly realize under what the characteristics of the era David Salle created the unique artistic language. The study on David Salle’s unique painting language is of important research value and reference significance for our current artistic creation.

Proliferated Leydig Cells for Engineered Testis-like Tissue Regeneration with Testosterone-Secreting Ability

        Hongda Bi,Xiaoyun Wang,Wei Liu,Yilin Cao,Guangdong Zhou,Xin Xing 한국조직공학과 재생의학회 2014 조직공학과 재생의학 Vol.11 No.5

Tissue engineering approach provides a hopeful strategy for reconstructing testis testosterone-secreting functions. However, limited source and low proliferative activity in vitro of Leydig cells (LCs, the main testosteroneproducing cells) makes testis-like tissue regeneration difficult to be achieved. This study explored the feasibility of in vitro expanding LCs and their potential application in testis-like tissue regeneration. LC lineage cells were isolated from Sprague-Dawley (SD) rats by differential adhesion method and cell composition was identified by expressions of 3β-HSD, LHR, LIFR, and c-kit. A modified expansion medium (EM) system was used to test the feasibility of in vitro expanding LC lineage. The results showed that the attached cells reached a high purification of LC lineage (>90%, indicated by positive expression of 3β-HSD) and that EM significantly enhanced proliferation of LC lineage compared to regular medium, which was testified to be related to the presence of stem LCs that was implied by positive expressions of LIFR and c-kit as well as the transition of 3β-HSD expression from negative to positive in partial cells. Importantly, the proliferated LCs showed relatively sustained testosterone-secreting ability in vitro and these cells combined with biodegradable scaffolds successfully regenerated testis-like tissue with sustained testosteronesecreting function in vivo, which was supported by the enhanced serum testosterone level in castrated rats. All these results indicated that the differential adhesion method could efficiently isolate and purify LC lineage and that EM system could efficiently promote proliferation and functional maintenance of LC lineage, providing a good cell source for testes-like tissue regeneration. Li-Xin Sun,Wen-wei Fu,Jing Ren,Liang Xu,Kai-Shun Bi,Min-Wei Wang 대한약학회 2006 Archives of Pharmacal Research Vol.29 No.2

Activity-guided fractionation of the ethanol extract of the whole plant from Solanum lyratum resulted in the isolation of a new pregnane derivative glycoside, 16-dehydropregnenolone 3-O- α-L-rhamnopyranosyl-(1→2)-β-D-glucopyranosid uronic acid (2), as well as other six known compounds: 16-dehydropregnenolone (1), allopregenolone (3), protocatechuic acid (4), vanillic acid (5), caffeic acid (6), and scopoletin (7). The structures of the isolated compounds were elucidated on the basis of their spectral data and chemical evidences. Compounds 1, 3, 4 were isolated for the first time from this plant. Cytotoxic activities of the isolated compounds were evaluated. Compound 1 exhibited significant cytotoxic activity against A375-S2, HeLa, SGC-7901, and Bel-7402 with IC50 values of 13.1 ± 0.9, 21.5 ± 1.0, 40.2 ± 0.7, and 49.8 ± 1.2 µg/mL, respectively.

      • Experimental investigation on in-plane seismic behavior of multistory opening masonry walls with two different failure modes

Ren Xin,Dengshan Bi,Wei Huang 국제구조공학회 2022 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.84 No.4

Aiming to examine different failure patterns in multistory URM walls, two 1/3 scaled three-story and three-bay URM models were designed for the quasi-static loading tests to contrastively investigate the failure processes and characteristics of the multistory URM walls. Two different failure responses were observed with special attention paid to the behavior of spandrelfailure mode. By evaluating the seismic performance and deformation behavior of two test walls, it is demonstrated that spandrels, that haven’t been properly designed in some codes, are of great significance in the failure of entire URM walls. Additionally, compared with pier-failure mode, spandrel-failure for multistory URM building is more reasonable and advisable as its effectively participation in energy dissipation and its efficiently improvement on seismic capacity and deformation in the overall structure. Furthermore, the experimental results are beneficial to improve seismic design and optimize reinforcement method of URM buildings.

      • Application of Multiplex Nested Methylated Specific PCR in Early Diagnosis of Epithelial Ovarian Cancer

Wang, Bi,Yu, Lei,Yang, Guo-Zhen,Luo, Xin,Huang, Lin Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.7

Objective: To explore the application of multiplex nested methylated specific polymerase chain reaction (PCR) in the early diagnosis of epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC). Materials and Methods: Serum and fresh tissue samples were collected from 114 EOC patients. RUNX3, TFPI2 and OPCML served as target genes. Methylation levels of tissues were assessed by multiplex nested methylated specific PCR, the results being compared with those for carcinoma antigen 125 (CA125). Results: The serum free deoxyribose nucleic acid (DNA) methylation spectrum of EOC patients was completely contained in the DNA spectrum of cancer tissues, providing an accurate reflection of tumor DNA methylation conditions. Serum levels of CA125 and free DNA methylation in the EOC group were evidently higher than those in benign lesion and control groups (p<0.05). Patients with early EOC had markedly lower serum CA125 than those with advanced EOC (p<0.05), but there was no significant difference in free DNA methylation (p>0.05). The sensitivity, specificity and positive predicative value (PPV) of multiplex nested methylated specific PCR were significantly higher for detection of all patients and those with early EOC than those for CA125 (p<0.05). In the detection of patients with advanced EOC, the PPV of CA125 detection was obviously lower than that of multiplex nested methylated specific PCR (p>0.05), but there was no significant difference in sensitivity (p>0.05). Conclusions: Serum free DNA methylation can be used as a biological marker for EOC and multiplex nested methylated specific PCR should be considered for early diagnosis since it can accurately determine tumor methylation conditions.

Performance and Applicability Analysis of Recognizing Microseismic Waveforms Using Neural Networks in Tunnel Engineering

        Wei Zhang,Xin Bi,Lei Hu,Pengxiang Li,Zhibin Yao 대한토목학회 2024 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.28 No.2

The sudden and harmful nature of rockbursts in tunnels necessitates an accurate and applicable method for automatically recognizing rock fracture signals during rockburst microseismic (MS) monitoring. In this paper, the performance and applicability of recognizing MS waveforms using an artificial neural network (ANN) and a deep neural network (DNN) were studied in tunnels excavated by different methods. The results show that ANN performs very well in recognizing rock fracturing waveforms with a signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) ≥ 3 but has a low accuracy for those with an SNR < 3. The DNN also performs well for waveforms with SNR ≥3, and has a relatively high accuracy for waveforms with SNR < 3. The ANN model can be used in tunnels excavated by drilling and blasting (D&B) since there are fewer “small” rock fracturing events. The DNN model is applicable in tunnels excavated by the tunnel boring machine (TBM), recognizing more “small” events. In addition, the ANN model is a better choice, with fewer training samples at the initial stage of monitoring working. With continuous monitoring, the DNN model can be used to ensure and improve the accuracy. These results lay a foundation for automatic rockburst MS monitoring techniques in tunnel engineering.

Short-Term Outcomes and Safety of Computed Tomography-Guided Percutaneous Microwave Ablation of Solitary Adrenal Metastasis from Lung Cancer: A Multi-Center Retrospective Study

        Min Men,Xin Ye,Weijun Fan,Kaixian Zhang,Jingwang Bi,Xia Yang,Aimin Zheng,Guanghui Huang,Zhigang Wei 대한영상의학회 2016 Korean Journal of Radiology Vol.17 No.6

Objective: To retrospectively evaluate the short-term outcomes and safety of computed tomography (CT)-guided percutaneous microwave ablation (MWA) of solitary adrenal metastasis from lung cancer. Materials and Methods: From May 2010 to April 2014, 31 patients with unilateral adrenal metastasis from lung cancer who were treated with CT-guided percutaneous MWA were enrolled. This study was conducted with approval from local Institutional Review Board. Clinical outcomes and complications of MWA were assessed. Results: Their tumors ranged from 1.5 to 5.4 cm in diameter. After a median follow-up period of 11.1 months, primary efficacy rate was 90.3% (28/31). Local tumor progression was detected in 7 (22.6%) of 31 cases. Their median overall survival time was 12 months. The 1-year overall survival rate was 44.3%. Median local tumor progression-free survival time was 9 months. Local tumor progression-free survival rate was 77.4%. Of 36 MWA sessions, two (5.6%) had major complications (hypertensive crisis). Conclusion: CT-guided percutaneous MWA may be fairly safe and effective for treating solitary adrenal metastasis from lung cancer.

      • Prognostic Factors on Overall Survival of Newly Diagnosed Metastatic Nasopharyngeal Carcinoma

Li, Jia-Xin,Huang, Shao-Min,Wen, Bi-Xiu,Lu, Tai-Xiang Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.7

Background: To investigate factors associated with overall survival in patients with newly diagnosed metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Materials and Methods: Two hundred and two consecutive patients with pathologically confirmed nasopharyngeal carcinoma with distant metastasis at diagnosis seen between December 2007 and May 2011 were reviewed. Patient, tumor and treatment factors were analyzed for their significance regarding overall survival. Results: The median follow-up time was 22 months. At the time of this report, 116 patients had died. For 112 patients, cause of death was nasopharyngeal carcinoma. The 1, 2, 3, and 4-year overall survival rates were 75.6%, 50.2%, 39.2%, and 28.2%, respectively. Cox regression multivariate analysis showed that T-stage (p=0.045), N-stage (p=0.014), metastasis number (p<0.001) and radiotherapy for nasopharynx and neck (p<0.001) were significant factors for overall survival. Conclusions: Early T-stage and N-stage, solitary metastasis in a single organ were good prognostic factors for patients with newly diagnosed metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma. Radiotherapy should be strongly recommended in systemic treatment.
