Numerical Simulation for Synergetic Deformation of Optical Fiber Sensor and Asphalt Mixture

        Xiang-fei Zhang,Zhen-dong Qian,Meng Zhang,Lei-lei Chen 대한토목학회 2019 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.23 No.7

Owing to the structural and material differences, data obtained by distributed optical fiber sensors (OFS) for asphalt pavement strain measurement lack of precision. For better understanding OFS measurement mechanism and investigating the measurement error correction, this study analyzed the synergetic deformation of OFS and asphalt mixture (AM) under load. Firstly, a threedimensional AM single-edge notched beam (SEB) model with OFS was established and verified using the discrete element method. Secondly, the micro-crack propagation of SEB model during loading procedure was analyzed to explore the debonding behavior between OFS and AM. Thirdly, strain development of OFS and AM was investigated during fracture stage and post-fracture stage. Finally, a measurement error correction method was developed based upon the materials and test conditions in this study. Results demonstrate that debonding occurs on OFS surface when macro-crack extends across OFS position. The key to making the strain measurement accuracy is to ensure the effective bonding between OFS and AM. In addition, this study provides a framework used to develop the measurement error correction, and the research results give the theoretical foundation for data selection and error correction of asphalt pavement strain measurement and crack detection using distributed optical fiber sensors.

      • Comprehensive Expression Analysis Suggests Functional Overlapping of Human FOX Transcription Factors in Cancer

        Zhang, Ya-Li,Sun, Feng-Ting,Zhang, Ze,Chen, Xiao-Xu,Liu, Ai-Xiang,Pan, Jing-Jing,Peng, Fei,Zhou, Shuai,Sun, Li-Jun Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.23

Forkhead-box (FOX) transcription factors comprise a large gene family that contains more than 50 members in man. Extensive studies have revealed that they not only have functions in control of growth and development, but also play important roles in different diseases, especially in cancer. However, biological functions for most of the members in the FOX family remain unknown. In the present study, the expression of 39 FOX genes in 48 kinds of cancer was mined from the Gene Expression Atlas database of European Bioinformatics Institute. The analysis results showed that some FOX genes demonstrate overlapping expression in various cancers, which suggests particular biological functions. The pleiotropic features of the FOX genes make them excellent candidates in efforts aimed to give medical treatment for cancers at the genetic level. The results also indicated that different FOX genes may have the synergy or antagonistics effects in the same cancers. The study provides clues for further functional analysis of FOX genes, especially for the pleiotropic biological functions and crosstalk of FOX genes in human cancers.

      • An on-chip hybrid plasmonic light steering concentrator with ∼96% coupling efficiency

        Zhang, Tian,Wang, Maoning,Yang, Yong,Fan, Fei,Lee, Takhee,Liu, Haitao,Xiang, Dong The Royal Society of Chemistry 2018 Nanoscale Vol.10 No.11

<P>We, for the first time, propose and theoretically study a plasmonic light steering concentrator (PLSC) that is based on a hybrid photonic-plasmonic sandwich structure. In this device, a transverse electric (TE) polarization guided mode supported by a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguide is vertically coupled to a metal-dielectric-metal sandwich structure, while the structure steers the light to a perpendicular metal taper and focuses the light on the apex of the taper with a small radius of 15 nm. Based on the coupled-mode theory, the two supermodes (quasi-TM modes) are clarified to illustrate the coupling mechanism of the device. We numerically obtain over 96% coupling efficiency at the 1500 nm telecommunication wavelength, and the mode width supported by the apex is limited laterally within the range of ∼110 nm, where the field enhancement calculated is found to be more than 107 compared to that of light in the silicon waveguide.</P>

Study on the space frame structures incorporated with magnetorheological dampers

Fei-Hong Xu,Zhao-Dong Xu,Xiang-Cheng Zhang 국제구조공학회 2017 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.19 No.3

Magnetorheological damper has received significant attention in recent years due to the reason that it can offer adaptability of active control devices without requiring the associated large power sources. In this paper, performance tests on a MR damper are carried out under different currents, excitation amplitudes and frequencies, the damping characteristics and energy dissipation capacity of the MR damper are analyzed. Elasto-plastic dynamic analysis on a space frame structure incorporated with MR dampers is conducted, and numerical analysis results show that MR dampers can significantly mitigate the structural vibration responses. Finally, the genetic algorithm with the improved binary crossover and mutation technique is adopted to optimize the arrangement of MR dampers. Numerical results show that dynamic responses of the optimal controlled structure are mitigated more effectively.

Interference Management by Vertical Beam Control Combined with Coordinated Pilot Assignment and Power Allocation in 3D Massive MIMO Systems

( Guomei Zhang ),( Bing Wang ),( Guobing Li ),( Fei Xiang ),( Gangming Lv ) 한국인터넷정보학회 2015 KSII Transactions on Internet and Information Syst Vol.9 No.8

In order to accommodate huge number of antennas in a limited antenna size, a large scale antenna array is expected to have a three dimensional (3D) array structure. By using the Active Antenna Systems (AAS), the weights of the antenna elements arranged vertically could be configured adaptively. Then, a degree of freedom (DOF) in the vertical plane is provided for system design. So the three-dimension MIMO (3D MIMO) could be realized to solve the actual implementation problem of the massive MIMO. However, in 3D massive MIMO systems, the pilot contamination problem studied in 2D massive MIMO systems and the inter-cell interference as well as inter-vertical sector interference in 3D MIMO systems with vertical sectorization exist simultaneously, when the number of antenna is not large enough. This paper investigates the interference management towards the above challenges in 3D massive MIMO systems. Here, vertical sectorization based on vertical beamforming is included in the concerned systems. Firstly, a cooperative joint vertical beams adjustment and pilot assignment scheme is developed to improve the channel estimation precision of the uplink with pilots being reused across the vertical sectors. Secondly, a downlink interference coordination scheme by jointly controlling weight vectors and power of vertical beams is proposed, where the estimated channel state information is used in the optimization modelling, and the performance loss induced by pilot contamination could be compensated in some degree. Simulation results show that the proposed joint optimization algorithm with controllable vertical beams` weight vectors outperforms the method combining downtilts adjustment and power allocation.

Hounsfield Units as an Independent Predictor of Failed Percutaneous Drainage of Spinal Tuberculosis Paraspinal Abscess Under Computed Tomography Guidance

        Yu Xiang,Jinyue He,Ruonan Bai,Huorong Gou,Fei Luo,Xuequan Huang,Zehua Zhang 대한척추신경외과학회 2023 Neurospine Vol.20 No.4

Objective: To investigate the value of Hounsfield units (HUs) as an independent predictor of failed percutaneous drainage of spinal tuberculosis paraspinal abscess under computed tomography (CT) guidance. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on 61 patients who underwent CT-guided percutaneous drainage for spinal tuberculosis paraspinal abscess between October 2017 and October 2020. Preoperative CT scans were used to measure the HUs of the abscess. Patients were categorized into successful drainage (n = 49) and failed drainage (n = 12) groups. Statistical analysis involved independent sample t-tests and chi-square tests to compare between the 2 groups. Binary logistic regression was performed to identify independent predictive factors for drainage failure. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves were employed to ascertain risk factor thresholds and diagnostic performance. Results: Among the patients, 49 experienced successful drainage while 12 faced drainage failure. The mean HUs of abscesses in the failed drainage group were significantly higher than those in the successful drainage group (p < 0.001). ROC analysis revealed an area under the curve of 0.897 (95% confidence interval, 0.808–0.986) for predicting drainage failure based on HUs. The optimal HU cutoff value for predicting drainage failure was 22.3, with a sensitivity of 91.7% and specificity of 69.4%. Conclusion: HUs are an independent predictor of failed percutaneous drainage of spinal tuberculosis paraspinal abscess under CT guidance. The HU value of 22.3 can be used as an initial screening threshold for predicting the success or failure of drainage.

Post-Transcriptional Control of Tropoelastin in Aortic Smooth Muscle Cells Affects Aortic Dissection Onset

        You-Fei Qi,Chang Shu,Zhan-Xiang Xiao,Ming-Yao Luo,Kun Fang,Yuan-Yuan Guo,Wen-Bo Zhang,Jie Yue 한국분자세포생물학회 2018 Molecules and cells Vol.41 No.3

Aortic dissection (AD) is a catastrophic disease with high mortality and morbidity, characterized with fragmentation of elastin and loss of smooth muscle cells. Although AD has been largely attributable to polymorphisms defect in the elastin-coding gene, tropoelastin (TE), other undermined factors also appear to play roles in AD onset. Here, we investigated the effects of post-transcriptional control of TE by microRNAs (miRNAs) on elastin levels in aortic smooth muscle cells (ASMC). We found that miR-144-3p is a miRNA that targets TE mRNA in both human and mouse. Bioinformatics analyses and dual luciferase reporter assay showed that miR-144-3p inhibited protein translation of TE, through binding to the 3-UTR of the TE mRNA. Interestingly, higher miR-144-3p levels and lower TE were detected in the ASMC obtained from AD patients, compared to those from non-AD controls. In a mouse model for human AD, infusion of adeno-associated viruses (serotype 6) carrying antisense for miR-144-3p (as-miR-144-3p) under CAG promoter significantly reduced the incidence and severity of AD, seemingly through enhancement of TE levels in ASMC. Thus, our data suggest an essential role of miR-144-3p on the pathogenesis of AD.

Study of the Electric Field Screening Effect for Field Emitter Arrays

        Nannan Li,Fei Yan,Shucai Pang,Lei Chen,Dazhi Jin,Wei Xiang,De Zhang,Jingyi Dai,Baoqing Zeng 한국물리학회 2015 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.66 No.8

Understanding the influence of the interaction of emitters on the field emission performance of a field emitter array is of great importance for the design of a multi-emitter device. In this work, a screening factor S is defined to quantify the effect of electric field screening due to the interaction of emitters in an array. A three-dimensional finite integration technique is used to study the electric field screening effect for Spindt-type field emitter arrays which have potential applications in flatscreen displays and high-power vacuum electronics. The dependences of the electric field screening on the tip-to-tip spacing, half-angle of the emitter, height of the emitter and radius of the tip’s curvature are analyzed. The effects of the variations in the size of the emitter’s geometry on the most efficient arrangement to achieve maximum emission efficiency in an array are discussed.
