        Small-World Features of Real-World Networks

Wenjun Xiao,Meisheng Li,Guanrong Chen 한국통신학회 2017 Journal of communications and networks Vol.19 No.3

It is well known that there are a large number of complex networks that have vertex-degree distributionsin a power-law form of $ck^{-\gamma}$, where $\emph{k}$ is the degree variable and $\emph{c}$ and $\gamma$are scaling and exponent constants. Recently, we found that it is effective to reveal the underlyingmechanism of power-law formation in real-world networks by analyzing their vertex-degree sequences. We showed before that, for a scale-free network of size \emph{N}, if its vertex-degree sequence is$ k_{1}<k_{2}<{\cdots}<k_{l} $, where $\{k_{1},k_{2},{{\cdots}},k_{l}\}$ is the set of all non-equal vertex degreesin the network, and if its power exponent satisfies $\gamma>1$, then the length \emph{l} of the abovevertex-degree sequence is of order $\log N$. We underline that this conclusion is important, which proves thatthe length of the vertex-degree sequence is a fundamental characteristic of a scale-free network. In this paper,we further investigate complex networks with more general distributions and we prove that the same conclusionabout the vertex-degree sequences holds even for non-network type of complex systems. We thereby conclude thatreal-world networks typically possess small-world features. We support this conclusion by verifying a largenumber of real-world networks and systems. To that end, we discuss some potential applications of the new findingin various fields of science, engineering and society, demonstrating that the conclusion is important with manyreal applications.

Numerical Investigation of Supersonic Lateral Jet Interaction for Subsonic Projectiles with Different Fins at Large Angle of Attack

        Xiao Wang,Ruyi Tao,Wenjun Ruan,Hao Wang,Dongjian Su,Xinggan Lu 한국항공우주학회 2021 International Journal of Aeronautical and Space Sc Vol.22 No.2

Detached Eddy Simulation is used to study the interaction flowfields of a supersonic lateral jet penetrating into the crossflow of projectiles with cruciform or X-type fin configurations at Ma=0.3 and α=0∘,30∘∼60∘. For α=0∘, typical flow structures such as barrel shock, Mach disk and counter-rotating vortex pair(CVP) induced from the jet orifice are observed. Asymmetrical flowfields downstream of the jet for α=30∘ are analyzed, as well as the pressure distribution on the surfaces of all the projectiles. The reason why the CVP mentioned above disappears in this condition is also proposed. The variations of the normal forces acting on these projectiles are pointed out. The investigations into the amplification factor and the control efficiency of the jet force show that X-type fin configuration is more beneficial to maintain attitude for projectiles at large angle of attack.

Effects of resveratrol on the inflammatory response and renal injury in hyperuricemic rats

        Xiao Benxi,Ma Wenjun,Zheng Ying,Li Zhen,Li Dan,Zhang Yanjun,Li Yuanhong,Wang Duan 한국영양학회 2021 Nutrition Research and Practice Vol.15 No.1

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVES: Hyperuricemic nephropathy is a common cause of acute kidney injury. Resveratrol can ameliorate kidney injury, but the explicit mechanism remains unclear. We investigated the effects of resveratrol on the inflammatory response and renal injury in hyperuricemic rats. MATERIALS/METHODS: A rat model of hyperuricemic nephropathy was established by the oral administration of a mixture of adenine and potassium oxinate. Biochemical analysis and hematoxylin and eosin staining were performed to assess the rat kidney function. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays were performed to evaluate the immune and oxidative responses. RESULTS: The expression levels of urine albumin and β2-microglobulin were significantly decreased after resveratrol treatment. In addition, the levels of serum creatinine and uric acid were significantly decreased in the resveratrol groups, compared with the control group. The levels of proinflammatory factors, such as interleukin-1β and tumor necrosis factor-α, in kidney tissue and serum were also increased in the hyperuricemic rats, and resveratrol treatment inhibited their expression. Moreover, the total antioxidant capacity in kidney tissue as well as the superoxide dismutase and xanthine oxidase levels in serum were all decreased by resveratrol treatment. CONCLUSIONS: Resveratrol may protect against hyperuricemic nephropathy through regulating the inflammatory response.

Impact of Defects in Steel-Concrete Interface on the Corrosion-Induced Cracking Propagation of the Reinforced Concrete

        Wenjun Zhu,Chengyue Yang,Zhongxu Yu,Junhua Xiao,Yude Xu 대한토목학회 2023 KSCE Journal of Civil Engineering Vol.27 No.6

This paper presents the corrosion-induced cracking performance of reinforced concrete in a chloride condition. The meso-scale structures of concrete specimens were studied according to the X-ray micro-computed tomography test, including the corrosion propagation, the accumulation and transportation of corrosion products, the defects and cracking behaviors of concrete cover. The experimental results show that the defects could provide a reasonable space for the accommodation of corrosion products, which could significantly increase the corrosion process and postpone the cracking performance. The propagation of the cracking path initiating from the corrosion area of the reinforcement to the concrete cover was also captured based on the experimental images, which can make contribution to the recognition of corrosion-induced cracking behavior of the concrete cover.

Dietary Tea Catechin Inclusion Changes Plasma Biochemical Parameters, Hormone Concentrations and Glutathione Redox Status in Goats

        Zhong, Rongzhen,Xiao, Wenjun,Ren, Guopu,Zhou, Daowei,Tan, Chuanyan,Tan, Zhiliang,Han, Xuefeng,Tang, Shaoxun,Zhou, Chuanshe,Wang, Min Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2011 Animal Bioscience Vol.24 No.12

The beneficial effects of tea catechins (TCs) are related not only to their antioxidant potential but also to the improvement of animal meat quality. In this study, we assessed the effects of dietary TC supplementation on plasma biochemical parameters, hormone responses, and glutathione redox status in goats. Forty Liuyang goats were randomly divided into four equal groups (10 animals/group) that were assigned to four experimental diets with TC supplementation at 4 levels (0, 2,000, 3,000 or 4,000 mg TC/kg DM feed). After a 60-day feeding trial, all goats were slaughtered and sampled. Dietary TC treatment had no significant effect on blood biochemical parameters, however, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (p<0.001), triglyceride (p<0.01), plasma urea nitrogen (p<0.01), and glucose (p<0.001) decreased and total protein (p<0.01) and albumin (p<0.05) increased with the feeding time extension, and day 20 was the turning point for most of changes. Interactions were found in glutathione (p<0.001) and the ratio of reduced and oxidized glutathione (p<0.05) in whole blood between treatment and feeding time. Oxidized glutathione in blood was reduced (p<0.05) by 2,000 mg TC/kg feed supplementation, and a similar result was observed in longissimus dorsi muscle. Though plasma glutathione peroxidase (p<0.01) and glutathione reductase (p<0.05) activities were affected by treatment and feeding time interactions, and glutathione S-transferases activity increased with feeding day extension, no changed values appeared in longissimus dorsi muscle. In conclusion, dietary TC supplementation affected the concentrations of some blood metabolites and accelerated GSH depletion in the blood of goats. In terms of less high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, the highest insulin and IGF-I concentrations, the highest ratio of reduced and oxidized glutathione in plasma, the dosage of 2,000 mg TC/kg feed might be desirable for growing goats to prevent glutathione depletion and keep normal physiological metabolism.

Glycine alleviated diquat-induced hepatic injury via inhibiting ferroptosis in weaned piglets

        Hua Hongwei,Xu Xiao,Tian Wei,Li Pei,Zhu Huiling,Wang Wenjun,Liu Yulan,Xiao Kan 아세아·태평양축산학회 2022 Animal Bioscience Vol.35 No.6

Objective: The beneficial effects of glycine were tested in piglets with diquat-induced hepatic injury. Methods: Thirty-two piglets were assigned by a 2×2 factorial experimental design including glycine supplementation and diquat challenge. After 3 weeks of feeding with a basic diet or a 1% glycine supplemented diet, piglets were challenged with diquat or saline. After 1 week later, the piglets were slaughtered and samples were collected. Results: Our results indicated that glycine alleviated diquat induced morphological hepatic injury, decreased the activities of plasma alanine aminotransferase, aspartate aminotransferase and glutamyl transpeptidase in the piglets under diquat challenge, and increased total antioxidant capacity and antioxidative enzyme activity significantly. Adding glycine enhanced the concentrations of hepatic adenosine triphosphate and adenosine diphosphate. Transmission electron microscope observation showed that diquat induced clear hepatocytes ferroptosis and its effect could be alleviated by glycine to a certain degree. Moreover, glycine significantly affected mRNA and protein expression of ferroptosis-related signals in the liver. Conclusion: These results demonstrated that glycine attenuated liver damage via inhibiting ferroptosis. Delayed Terminal Ileal Perforation in a Relapsed/Refractory B-Cell Lymphoma Patient with Rapid Remission Following Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-Cell Therapy

        Yongxian Hu,Jiasheng Wang,Chengfei Pu,Kui Zhao,Qu Cui,Guoqing Wei,Wenjun Wu,Lei Xiao,Yang Xiao,Jinping Wang,Zhao Wu,He Huang 대한암학회 2018 Cancer Research and Treatment Vol.50 No.4

Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell strategy targeting CD19 (CART19) has prominent anti-tumor effect for relapsed/refractory B-cell lymphomas. CART19-associated complications have been gradually recognized, however, late-onset complications have not been extensively studied. Herein, for the first time we report a diffuse large B-cell lymphoma patient with terminal ileum involvement obtained rapid remission and developed spontaneous terminal ileal perforation 38 days following CART19 infusion. The late-onset perforation reminds us that, for the safety of CART treatment, more cautions are warranted for the management of delayed GI complications.

The Novel Pathogenic Mutation c.849dupT in BRCA2 Contributes to the Nonsense-Mediated mRNA Decay of BRCA2 in Familial Breast Cancer

        Sanrong Li,Jing Ma,Caiying Hu,Xing Zhang,Deyong Xiao,Lili Hao,Wenjun Xiao,Jichun Yang,Ling Hu,Xiaowei Liu,Minghui Dong,Duan Ma,Rensheng Liu 한국유방암학회 2018 Journal of breast cancer Vol.21 No.3

In this study, we used next-generation sequencing methods to screen 300 individuals for BRCA1 and BRCA2. A novel mutation (c.849dupT) in BRCA2 was identified in a female patient and her unaffected brothers. This mutation leads to the truncation of BRCA2 functional domains. Moreover, BRCA2 mRNA expression levels in mutation carriers are significantly reduced compared to noncarriers. Immunofluorescence and western blot assays showed that this mutation resulted in reduced BRCA2 protein expression. Thus, we identified a novel mutation that damaged the function and expression of BRCA2 in a family with breast cancer history. The pedigree analysis suggested that this mutation is strongly associated with familial breast cancer. Genetic counsellors suggest that mutation carriers in this family undergo routine screening for breast cancer, as well as other malignancies, such as prostate and ovarian cancer. The effects of this BRCA2 mutation on drug resistance should be taken into consideration during treatment.
