Patch Plate Repair Method for Steel Structures Combining Adhesives and Stud Bolts

Recently, a repair method by bonding patch plates is being applied to corroded steel structures. However, one of the issues of patch plate bonding repair is the brittle debonding of the patch plates. Generally, when the delamination of the patch plates occurs, the composite eff ect acting between the steel members and patch plates abruptly decreases. Therefore, to prevent the brittle debonding of the patch plates, a repair method combining an adhesive and stud bolts is proposed. Till date, tensile and compressive tests have been performed for the proposed method. In this study, plate bending tests were conducted to verify the eff ectiveness of this method under bending conditions. Furthermore, two types of epoxy resin-based adhesives were prepared to evaluate the eff ectiveness of the proposed method with diff erent adhesive properties. The test results show that the proposed method is able to prevent the brittle debonding of the patch plates in the case of both epoxy resins.

The NCT Program, in which the present JT-60U is being modified into a superconducting coil machine, is discussed under nationwide collaboration in Japan. Its mission is to establish high-beta steady-state operation for DEMO and to contribute to ITER. NCT is designed to have potential to investigate such research.
Short-term Response of Vegetation to Cattle Grazing in an Abandoned Orchard in Southwestern Japan

An abandoned mandarin orange orchard in southwestern Japan was set-stocked by Japanese Black cows at two stocking rates (1.0 and 2.0 animals/ha), and vegetation dynamics and diet selection by cattle were monitored for two years, in an effort to obtain information on effective use of abandoned agricultural fields for low-cost animal production and environmental conservation. Two dominant species at the commencement of grazing, kudzu (Pueraria lobata Ohwi) and tall goldenrod (Solidago altissima L.), showed different responses to grazing during the two years; the composition of kudzu decreased, contrasting with that of tall goldenrod which increased at both stocking rates. This was caused by high preference for kudzu and avoidance or low preference for tall goldenrod by cattle. Retrogression of vegetation due to cattle disturbances occurred at both stocking rates, with the high stocking rate leading to a lower degree of succession than the low stocking rate. It was shown that cattle grazing, particularly at a high stocking rate, was effective in the management of vegetation of an abandoned orchard.

High-k thin lms of ZrO2, PrOx of 10 nm thickness have been prepared by pulsed laser deposition, and characterized in microscopic structure and electrical properties. Crystallization is promoted in ZrO2 lms deposited above 400 C, but a signicant XRD peak was not observed in the ZrO2 lm grown below 400 C. The leakage current is decreased by increasing growth temperature, but an equivalent-oxide thickness (EOT) obtained from accumulation capacitance of C .. V characteristics becomes large. The lms deposited at 400 C were annealed at 400 C in O2 gas to reduce the leakage. The leakage current change to be small, but the EOTs become large. Oxygen radical annealing is carried out to reduced the leakage, and is eective for ZrO2 thin lm. On the other hand, only small improvement is observed in the PrOx lms.
Feline Interstitial Cystitis Enhances Mucosa-Dependent Contractile Responses to Serotonin

Purpose: To determine whether responses to serotonin are altered in bladder strips from cats diagnosed with a naturally occurring form of bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis termed feline interstitial cystitis (FIC). Methods: Full thickness bladder strips were isolated from aged matched healthy control cats and cats with clinically verified FIC. Bladder strips were mounted in an organ bath and connected to a tension transducer to record contractile activity. A serotonin dose response (0.01–10μM) was determined for each strip with the mucosa intact or denuded. Results: Bladder strips from control and FIC cats contracted in response to serotonin in a dose-dependent manner. The normalized force of serotonin-evoked contractions was significantly greater in bladder strips from cats with FIC (n=7) than from control cats (n=4). Removal of the mucosa significantly decreased serotonin-mediated responses in both control and FIC bladder preparations. Furthermore, the contractions in response to serotonin were abolished by 1μM atropine in both control and FIC bladder strips. Conclusions: The effect of serotonin on contractile force, but not sensitivity, was potentiated in bladder strips from cats with FIC, and was dependent upon the presence of the mucosa in control and FIC groups. As atropine inhibited these effects of serotonin, we hypothesize that, serotonin enhances acetylcholine release from the mucosa of FIC cat bladder strips, which could account for the increased force generated. In summary, FIC augments the responsiveness of bladder to serotonin, which may contribute to the symptoms associated with this chronic condition.
