      • Smart System Identification of Super High-Rise Buildings using Limited Vibration Data during the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake

        A method of smart system identification of super high-rise buildings is proposed in which super high-rise buildings are modeled by a shear-bending system. The method is aimed at finding the story shear and bending stiffnesses of a specific story only from the horizontal floor accelerations. The proposed method uses a set of closed-form expressions for the story shear and bending stiffnesses in terms of the limited floor accelerations and utilizes a reduced shear-bending system with the same number of elements as the observation points. A difficulty of prediction of an unstable specific function in a low frequency range can be overcome by introducing an ARX model and discussing its relation with the Taylor series expansion coefficients of a transfer function. It is demonstrated that the shear-bending system can simulate the vibration records with a reasonable accuracy. It is also shown that the vibration records at two super high-rise buildings during the 2011 Tohoku (Japan) earthquake can be simulated with the proposed method including a technique of inserting degrees of freedom between the vibration recording points. Finally it is discussed further that the time-varying identification of fundamental natural period and stiffnesses can be conducted by setting an appropriate duration of evaluation in the batch least-squares method.

        Verification and Mitigation of Seismic Failure in Concrete Piers under Near-field Earthquakes

        This paper verifies the difference of the seismic behavior and seismic damage of the neighboring two reinforced concrete piers damaged by the 1995 Hyogoken Nanbu earthquake. The two piers were almost the same size, carrying slightly different dead load, and were provided with the same reinforcement arrangement except the amount of longitudinal reinforcement at the bottom portion of the piers. The pier with more reinforcement was completely collapsed due to this near field earthquake by shear failure at the longitudinal reinforcement cut-off while the other was only damaged at the bottom by flexure even though the longitudinal reinforcement cut-off was also existed at the mid height of the pier. According to the results of the pseudo dynamic test, the seismic damage was recognized to be greatly dependent on the ground motion characteristics even though the employed ground motions had the same peak acceleration. The severe damage was observed when the test employed the seismic wave that had strong influence to the longer period range compared to the initial natural period of the pier. On the other hand, based on the similar model experiment, the defect of gas-pressure welded splice of longitudinal reinforcement was revealed to save the piers against collapse due to the so-called fail-safe mechanism contrary to the intuitive opinion of some researchers. It was concluded that the primary cause of the collapse of the pier was the extremely strong intensity and peculiar characteristics of the earthquake motion according to both the site-specific and the structure-specific effects.

      • Comparison of Radical Cystectomy and Chemoradiotherapy in Patients with Locally Advanced Bladder Cancer

        The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical outcomes of radical cystectomy (RC) and concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CRT) with methotrexate, vinblastine, doxorubicin, and cisplatin (MVAC) in patients with locally advanced bladder cancer (BC). From December 2000 to February 2012, 72 patients with locally advanced BC (T3-4a, N0 or N+, M0) received either RC or CRT. RC with bilateral pelvic lymph node dissection including the common iliac region as the standard procedure. Patients in the CRT group received one cycle of MVAC followed by radiotherapy with a half dose of MVAC and then two more cycles of MVAC. Standard fractionation at a daily dose of 1.8-2.0 Gy was used, with a median total dose of 50 Gy (range, 45-60 Gy). The 3-year progression-free survival (PFS) rates in the RC and CRT groups were 56.2% and 25.6%, respectively (p=-0.015) and the 3-year overall survival (OS) rates were 63.5% and 48.1% (p=0.272). Multivariate Cox proportional hazards regression analysis with application of a propensity score indicated that RC was a significant predictor of PFS (p=0.033) but not of OS (p=0.291). Among patients with locally advanced BC, PFS was significantly prolonged in the RC group compared with the CRT group. However, RC was not a significant predictor of OS. Although the sample size in this study was small, the results suggest that patient background and postoperative quality of life should be considered when choosing treatment strategy for locally advanced BC.

      • Fuzzy Controller of Three-Inertia Resonance System designed by Differential Evolution

        In this paper, a new design method of vibration suppression controller for multi-inertia (especially, 3-ineritia) resonance systems is proposed. The controller consists of a digital fuzzy controller for speed loop and a digital PI controller for current minor loop. The three scaling factor of the fuzzy controller and two PI controller gains are determined by Differential Evolution (DE). The DE is one of optimization techniques and a kind of evolutionary computation technique. In this paper, we have applied the DE/rand/1/bin strategy to design the optimal controller parameters. Comparing with the conventional design algorithm, the proposed method is able to shorten the time of the controller design to a large extent and to obtain accurate results. Finally, we confirmed the effectiveness of the proposal method by the computer simulations.

        Three-Dimensional Characterization of Strong Recirculating Flow by Stereoscopic PIV

        Spray characteristics in the swirling flow were investigated by Stereoscopic PIV. Spatial spray structures were measured by PIV as well as PDA in order to understand stable flame stabilization. The feasibility study of Stereoscopic PIV in spray flame was also demonstrated. The size and location of recirculation flow were measured. The stereoscopic PIV could provide 3-D flow fluctuation that cannot be measured by convectional measurement systems.

        Holographic Grating by Means of Polymer Liquid Crystals

        Formation of intensity gratings was studied with two s-polarized (s+s) configuration in polymer liquid crystals (PLCs) containing a photochromic moiety (azobenzene) and a mesogenic unit (tolane, T-AB; cyanobiphenyl, CB-AB) by photoinduced alignment of PLCs. Remarkable differences were observed between the two PLCs. T-AB showed a faster response to the change in the diffraction intensity than CB-AB. In T-AB, alignment change took place faster than that of CB-AB. By introducing the tolane unit at the side chain, we obtained a diffraction efficiency of 30 % in the Raman-Nath regime

        國立臺灣圖書館所藏敦煌文獻『成實論義記』卷中 (臺北131)について(二)

        The study of Harivarman’s *Satyasiddhiśāstra (or *Tattvasiddhiśāstra), translated by Kumārajīva (344?―413?; the translation was completed in CE 412), flourished in the first half of the Southern and Northern Dynasties, that is, the southern Song 宋, Qi 齊, and Linag 梁 dynasties, and also the Northern Wei 北魏 dynasty. This is one of the most remarkable features of the history of Abhidharma thought in China. However, the actual way in which *Satyasiddhiśāstra was studied at that time is still not known. In this research situation, we should pay attention to the eight remaining fragments of a commentary on the *Satyasiddhiśāstra, which were unearthed at Dunhuang and Turfan at the beginning of the preceding century. Each fragment is extremely valuable to scholars, as they show the actual way that *Satyasiddhiśāstra was studied in the period of the Southern and Northern Dynasties, but nobody has researched these fragments intensively up to this point. Therefore, in the present study, I will examine one of the fragments, the Chengshi lun yiji (the Commentary on the *Satyasiddhiśāstra) Fascicle 2 『成實論義記』卷中 (taibei 臺北 131), belonging to the National Taiwan Library, to arrange the position in the oter fragments especially with reference to the form of commentary. The findings of the study of this fragment are as follows: 1. We can roughly classify the form of commentary of the seven fragments out of the remaining eight fragments except the Chengshi lun yiji Fascicle 2, according to the suiwen jieshi 隨文解釋 (the successive commentary on each sentences) and the zhang 章 -style commentary. The early two fragments out of those are the typical suiwen jieshi commentaries, and the later five commentaries are the typical zhang 章 -style commentaries. 2. The form of commentary of the Chengshi lun yiji Fascicle 2 is a mixture of the suiwen jieshi commentaries and the zhang 章 -style commentaries. 3. Thus I think that the Chengshi lun yiji Fascicle 2 is the text which is in a position between the commentaries of the suiwen jieshi and the commentaries of the zhang 章 -style, and that the text was composed in when the form of commentary on *Satyasiddhiśāstra was in transition from the the suiwen jieshi to the zhang 章 -style. 중국 남북조 시대의 전반, 즉 유송(劉宋)․남제(南齊)․양(梁) 또한 북위(北魏)에서 하리발마(訶梨跋摩, 4세기) 조(造)․구마라집(鳩摩羅什, 344?-413?) 역 『성실론(成實論)』(412년 번역 완료)의 연구가 융성한 것은 중국 아비달마 사상사의 가장 큰 특징의 하나이지만, 당시의 『성실론』 연구의 실태는 아직 불분명한 부분이 많다. 여기에서 주목해야 되는 것이 전(前) 세기 초두에 돈황 및 투루판에서 출토한 8개의 『성실론』 주석서의 단편의 존재이다. 이 단편들은 모두 중국 남북조 시기 『성실론』 연구의 실태를 말하는 중요 자료이지만, 어느 문헌에 대해서도 본격적인 연구는 실시되지 않았었다. 그래서 본고에서는 이 가운데의 1개인 국립 대만도서관 소장 『성실론의기(成實論義記)』 권중(卷中)(대북臺北 131)을 주제로 삼아, 특히 주석형식이라는 관점에서 현존 『성실론』 주석서들 가운데 이 문헌이 차지하는 위치를 밝히고자 한다. 본고의 고찰 결과는 이하와 같다. 1. 현존하는 8개의 『성실론』 주석서 가운데 『성실론의기』 권중을 제외한 7개 주석서의 주석형식은 크게 수문해석(隨文解釋)과 「장(章)」 형식과의 두 가지로 나눌 수 있고, 그 중 성립시기가 이른 것으로 생각되는 2개는 전형적인 수문해석이며 성립시기가 늦은 것으로 생각되는 5개는 전형적인 「장」 형식의 주석서이다. 2. 『성실론의기』 권중의 주석형식은 수문해석과 공통되는 부분과 「장」 형식과 유사한 부분이 섞여 있다. 3. 따라서 『성실론의기』 권중은 수문해석에 의한 『성실론』 주석서와 「장」형식에 의한 『성실론』 주석서와의 중간에 위치하는 문헌이며, 당시 『성실론』 주석서의 주석형식이 수문해석으로부터 「장」형식으로 바뀌 가는 과도기에 성립된 문헌으로 생각된다.

      • Characteristics of Cow's Voices in Time and Frequency Domains for Recognition

        On the assumption that the voices of the cows are produced by the linear prediction filter, we characterized the cows' voices. The order of this filter was determined by examining the voice characteristics both in time and frequency domains. The proposed order of the linear prediction filter is 15 for modeling voice production of the cow. The characteristics of the amplitude envelope of the voice signal was investigated by analyzing the sequence of the short time variance both in time and frequency domains, and the new parameters were defined. One of the coefficients of the linear prediction filter generating the voice signal, the fundamental frequency, the slope of the straight line regressed from the log-log spectra of the short time variance and the coefficients of the linear prediction filter generating the sequence of the short time variance of the voice signal can differentiate the two cows.
