        Reevaluation of the Necessity of Iron Injection to Newborn Piglets

        The growth and immune responses to endotoxin lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge ( $20{\mu}g/kg$) of piglets with and without a iron dextran injection (Fe, 200 mg/head) two days after birth are compared. Sixty-four newborn piglets from eight litters were allocated randomly to one of four treatments. The control received no iron dextran and only saline (Sal) injection on the second and fifteenth day after birth (Sal-Sal). The remaining three groups received Fe-Sal, Sal-LPS, Fe-LPS treatments respectively. On fifteen days of age, blood samples of piglets were taken at 0 h, 1 h, 2 h and 4 d after saline or LPS injection to determine immune functions and blood characteristics. The trial terminated when the pig reached 56 days and the average daily gain of piglets was then measured. Daily gain, serum immunoglobulin G (IgG) concentration and red blood cell counts did not vary significantly among the four groups at any measuring times. Serum tumor necrosis factor-${\alpha}$ (TNF-${\alpha}$) concentration increased sharply 1 h after LPS injection. However, iron injection did not change TNF-${\alpha}$ concentration responds to LPS injection. White blood cell counts of two LPS injection groups were significantly lowered 1 h following the injection. In contrast, serum lactoferrin concentration had increased significantly 1 and 2 h postinjection. Furthermore, iron injection produced no further effects on these two criteria. Iron injection increased the hemoglobin (Hb) concentration of piglets at any measuring time, and LPS injection lowered Hb concentration. In conclusion, a 200 mg/head of iron dextran injection on the second day after birth increased Hb concentration, had no detrimental effect on the immune responses and growth of piglets. Moreover, if creep feed (175 mg Fe/kg feed) is provided from d 7 after birth, the Fe-injection does not contribute to overall performance of piglets and may not be a necessity in practice.

        Effects of dietary supplementation with Taiwanese tea byproducts and probiotics on growth performance, lipid metabolism, and the immune response in red feather native chickens

        Objective: This study compared the catechin composition of different tea byproducts and investigated the effects of dietary supplementation with green tea byproducts on the accumulation of abdominal fat, the modulation of lipid metabolism, and the inflammatory response in red feather native chickens.Methods: Bioactive compounds were detected, and in vitro anti-obesity capacity analyzed via 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. In animal experiments, 320 one-day-old red feather native chickens were divided into 4 treatment groups: control, basal diet supplemented with 0.5% Jinxuan byproduct (JBP), basal diet supplemented with 1% JBP, or basal diet supplemented with 5×10<sup>6</sup> colony-forming unit (CFU)/kg <i>Bacillus amyloliquefaciens</i>+5×10<sup>6</sup> CFU/kg <i>Saccharomyces cerevisiae</i> (BA+SC). Growth performance, serum characteristics, carcass characteristics, and the mRNA expression of selected genes were measured.Results: This study compared several cultivars of tea, but Jinxuan showed the highest levels of the anti-obesity compound epigallocatechin gallate. 3T3-L1 preadipocytes treated with Jinxuan extract significantly reduced lipid accumulation. There were no significant differences in growth performance, serum characteristics, or carcass characteristics among the groups. However, in the 0.5% JBP group, mRNA expression of fatty acid synthase (FAS) and acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACC) were significantly decreased. In the 1% JBP group, FAS, ACC and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor γ levels were significantly decreased. Moreover, inflammation-related mRNA expression levels were decreased by the addition of JBP.Conclusion: JBP contained abundant catechins and related bioactive compounds, which reduced lipid accumulation in 3T3-L1 preadipocytes, however there was no significant reduction in abdominal fat. This may be due to a lack of active anti-obesity compounds or because the major changes in fat metabolism were not in the abdomen. Nonetheless, lipogenesis-related and inflammation-related mRNA expression were reduced in the 1% JBP group. In addition, dietary supplementation with tea byproducts could reduce the massive amount of byproducts created during tea production and modulate lipid metabolism and the inflammatory response in chickens.         Design of wireless sensor network and its application for structural health monitoring of cable-stayed bridge

        A low-cost wireless sensor network (WSN) solution with highly expandable super and simple nodes was developed. The super node was designed as a sensing unit as well as a receiving terminal with low energy consumption. The simple node was designed to serve as a cheaper alternative for large-scale deployment. A 12-bit ADC inputs and DAC outputs were reserved for sensor boards to ease the sensing integration. Vibration and thermal field tests of the Chi-Lu Bridge were conducted to evaluate the WSN's performance. Integral acceleration, temperature and tilt sensing modules were constructed to simplify the task of long-term environmental monitoring on this bridge, while a star topology was used to avoid collisions and reduce power consumption. We showed that, given sufficient power and additional power amplifier, the WSN can successfully be active for more than 7 days and satisfy the half bridge 120-meter transmission requirement. The time and frequency responses of cables shocked by external force and temperature variations around cables in one day were recorded and analyzed. Finally, guidelines on power characterization of the WSN platform and selection of acceleration sensors for structural health monitoring applications were given.

      • Large-scale synthesis of n-type gallium nitride nanowires using NiI<sub>2</sub>-decorated carbon nanotubes as a reactant

        This study demonstrates the first example of the use of NiI<SUB>2</SUB>-filled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) for the synthesis of GaN nanowires (NWs). Large quantities of single crystal and n-type GaN NWs were synthesized after NiI<SUB>2</SUB>-decorated CNTs reacted with Ga<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> in NH<SUB>3</SUB>. Comparatively few short GaN NWs (<1μm) were synthesized in the absence of CNTs, and GaN NWs were found to be synthesized with a reasonable yield using graphite as a reactant. Therefore, CNTs play no role as a template in the growth of NW, but this growth is assisted by NiI<SUB>2</SUB> nanocrystals via a vapour-liquid-solid mechanism in which the presence of carbon materials facilitates the reduction of Ga<SUB>2</SUB>O<SUB>3</SUB> to Ga<SUB>2</SUB>O and Ga, thus providing a constant Ga source during the growth of the NW. Furthermore, the use of NiI<SUB>2</SUB>-filled single wall carbon nanotubes results in a higher NW yield at a low growth temperature (600<SUP>o</SUP>C), indicating that NiI<SUB>2</SUB>-filled single wall CNTs can serve as an effective reactant for the synthesis of GaN NWs.

        Dynamical stability, electronic and thermoelectric properties of quaternary ZnFeTiSi Heusler compound

        We investigated the dynamical stability, electronic and thermoelectric properties of the ZnFeTiSi Heusler compound by combining the first-principles calculations and semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. The phonon dispersion indicates the dynamical stability and the calculated formation energy is negative which confirm the stability of ZnFeTiSi in the Heusler structure. The calculated electronic structures show that ZnFeTiSi is a semiconductor with an indirect band gap of about 0.573 eV using GGA and 0.643 eV by mBJ-GGA potentials at equilibrium lattice parameter (5.90 Å). Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity and electronic thermal conductivity were calculated to describe the thermoelectric properties of the ZnFeTiSi compound. It is found that it exhibits high Seebeck coefficient and power factor, making it promising for future thermoelectric applications.

        본고는 Lin(2014)의 후반부를 번역한 것이다. 그는 Chomsky(1995)와 그 후속 저작에서 말하는 경동사의 개념을 채택하는 대신, 표준중국어에서의 경동사는 통사부(syntax)에서 사건구조를 구성하는 데 있어 의미적 효과와 역할이 매우 중요하다고 강조한다. 이 관점에서 볼 때, 경동사는 사건 정보를 전달하고 논항을 문장에 도입한다. 이어서 그는 그의 노선을 따르는 2가지 제안(피영향성 구문과 장소 주어에 대한 분석)을 살펴보고, 아울러 중국어 경동사에 대한 또 다른 이론 3가지(상적 일치, 무경동사, 배분형태론)를 소개하고 검토한다. The paper is a translation of the latter half part of Lin (2014). Instead of adopting the notion of light verbs as described in Chomsky (1995) and its subsequent works, he stresses that light verbs in Mandarin Chinese are of great importance to the semantic effects and role in the composition of event structure in syntax. From this point of view, light verbs both carry event information and introduce an argument into the sentence. He then considers two suggestions(an analysis on affected constructions and locative subjects) that follow his line, and also introduces and reviews three alternative theories(aspectual agreement, no light verb, distributed morphology) of light verbs in Chinese.

      • Distribution of stress state in the Nankai subduction zone, southwest Japan and a comparison with Japan Trench

        <P>To better understand the distribution of three dimensional stress states in the Nankai subduction zone, southwest Japan, we review various stress-related investigations carried out in the first and second stage expeditions of the Nankai Trough Seismogenic Zone Experiment (NanTroSEIZE) by the Integrated Ocean Drilling Program (IODP) and compile the stress data. Overall, the maximum principal stress sigma(l) in the shallower levels (<similar to 1 km) is vertical from near the center of forearc basin to near the trench and; the maximum horizontal stress S-Hmax (interpreted to be the intermediate principal stress sigma(2)) is generally parallel to the plate convergence vector. The exception to this generalization occurs along the shelf edge of the Nankai margin where S-Hmax, is along strike rather than parallel to the plate convergence vector. Reorientation of the principal stresses at deeper levels (e.g., >similar to 1 km below seafloor or in underlying accretionary prism) with sigma(1) becoming horizontal is also suggested at all deeper drilling sites. We also make a comparison of the stress state in the hanging wall of the frontal plate-interface between Site C0066 in the Nankai and Site C0019 in the Japan Trench subduction zone drilled after the 2011 Mw 9.0 Tohoku-Oki earthquake. In the Japan Trench, a comparison between stress state before and after the 2011 mega-earthquake shows that the stress changed from compression before the earthquake to extension after the earthquake. As a result of the comparison between the Nankai Trough and Japan Trench, a similar current stress state with trench parallel extension was recognized at both C0006 and C0019 sites. Hypothetically, this may indicate that in Nankai Trough it is still in an early stage of the interseismic cycle of a great earthquake which occurs on the decollement and propagates to the toe (around site C0006).
