Paper records were generally degraded by some factors from atmospheric environments, like temperature, relative humidity or air pollutants. In this study, the degradation behavior of paper records by single or mixed gases of NO₂, SO₂, HCHO and TVOC was evaluated. The mechanical, optical and chemical properties of 4 kinds of paper (acid and neutral-based printing paper, traditional Hanji, and filter paper) were directly and indirectly affected by gaseous harmful materials. The brightness and L* value in all papers were slightly increased by accelerated aging under gaseous HCHO and TVOCs, but highly decreased by conditions under gases NO₂ and SO₂. The optical properties of paper records were most vulnerable in acid-based paper and high stable in filter paper and traditional Hanji by air pollutant degradation. The aging treatments under mixed gas pollutants including NO₂ resulted in decrease of physical, mechanical and optical properties of paper, so it was supposed that the concentration of NO₂ gas would be strictly controlled for optimum indoor air quality management in domestic storage centers for paper records.

28세 남자의 후천성 면역 결핍증 환자에서 S. pneumoniae 폐렴이 합병되어 사망한 1예를 경험하여 부검소견과 함께 보고하는 바이다. Pulmonary infections such as Pneumocystis carinii, cytomegalovirus, and tuberculosis are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in patients with human immunodeficiency virus(HIV) infection. Patients with HIV infection are at increased risk for bacterial pneumonia in addition to opportunistic infection. Although in a primary defect, HIV infection is associated with substantial dysfunction of humoral immunity, which predisposes patients to bacterial infections, particularly with encapsulated organisms, such as Streptococcus pneumoniae. We report a case of 28 year-old Korean male with HIV infection who died of respiratory failure due to pneumococcal pneumonia with autopsy findings.

<P>Excessive mitochondrial fission is a prominent early event and contributes to mitochondrial dysfunction, synaptic failure, and neuronal cell death in the progression of Alzheimer's disease (AD). However, it remains to be determined whether inhibition of excessive mitochondrial fission is beneficial in mammal models of AD. To determine whether dynamin-related protein 1 (Drp1), a key regulator of mitochondrial fragmentation, can be a disease-modifying therapeutic target for AD, we examined the effects of Drp1 inhibitor on mitochondrial and synaptic dysfunctions induced by oligomeric amyloid-beta(A beta) in neurons and neuropathology and cognitive functions in A beta precursor protein/presenilin 1 double-transgenic AD mice. Inhibition of Drp1 alleviates mitochondrial fragmentation, loss of mitochondrial membrane potential, reactive oxygen species production, ATP reduction, and synaptic depression in A beta-treated neurons. Furthermore, Drp1 inhibition significantly improves learning and memory and prevents mitochondrial fragmentation, lipid peroxidation, BACE1 expression, and A beta deposition in the brain in the AD model. These results provide evidence that Drp1 plays an important role in A beta-mediated and AD-related neuropathology and in cognitive decline in an AD animal model. Therefore, inhibiting excessive Drp1-mediated mitochondrial fission may be an efficient therapeutic avenue for AD.</P>

Purpose: Constipation is a frequent complaint among dialysis patients. However, factors that contribute to constipation in these patients have not been evaluated rigorously. The aim of study was to assess the prevalence and factors that contribute to constipation in patients with End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) undergoing hemodialysis (HD) or peritoneal dialysis (PD). Methods: Patients undergoing HD or PD for more than six months in the six dialysis centers were asked to complete a self-administered questionnaire that is designed to assess constipation by Rome-III criteria. Beck depression inventory (BDI) were assessed. A total of 146 patients (HD 91, PD 55) completed the study. Results: The prevalence of constipation was 33% in 91 HD patients and 31% in 55 PD patients. Prevalence of constipation was 32% and did not differ by dialysis mode. Older age, unemployed state, high cumulative illness rating scale and high BDI were associated with constipation. In multivariate analysis, BDI was an independent factor associated with constipation. The prevalence of constipation was 18% and 50% for patients with BDI <15 and ≥15, respectively. The odd ratio for constipation in patients with BDI ≥15 was 3.4 (95% CI, 1.4-8.1). Conclusion: Careful psychogenic attention must be paid to ESRD patients with constipation.
Development of salt-tolerant transgenic rice using OsCBF4 cDNA
So-Hyeon Baek,Eun-Mi Lee,Man-Kee Baek,Woo-Jae Kim,Jong-Ho Park,Ki-Yong Ha,Hyun-Soon Kim,Young-Chan Cho,Jeom-Ho Lee 한국육종학회 2014 한국육종학회 심포지엄 Vol.2014 No.07
This study was conducted to isolate a salt tolerant gene and to develop salt tolerant rice for reclaimed-saline areas through genetic transformation. A rice c/DRE binding factor 4(OsCBF4) cDNA was isolated from rice using RT-PCR. The full-length cDNA of the CBF4 gene consists of 1,429 nucleotides and 274 amino acid residues. In order to develop salt tolerant rice, transgenic rice plants containing the OsCBF4 gene were obtained via Agrobacterium-mediated transformation. The stable incorporation of the OsCBF4 gene into rice genome was confirmed by PCR and Southern analysis. The stable expression of introduced gene was also validated by RT-PCR analysis in T2 plants. Biological assay of T3 progeny of the transgenic plants in Yoshida solution containing 120mM Nacl for 2weeks, confirmed that the OsCBF4 confers salt tolerance to transgenic rice plants. OsCBF4 transgene in the transgenic line CBF4-10 was markedly expressed up to over three-fold in the leaf by 120 mM NaCl treatment. Real-time PCR analysis revealed that the levels of the transgene expression were markedly increased under salt treatment. The transgenic line CBF4-10 which showed highest ability to recover from the saline stress could be used as a potential source for salt tolerance in rice breeding programs
Original Articles : Case report : Colonic Enterolith in an 11-year-old Pony
( Kyung Hyun Lee ),( Hyun Kyoung Lee ),( Eun Jin Choi ),( Kang Hyun Baek ),( Jun Seok Hwang ),( Byoung Jae So ) 한국예방수의학회(구 한국수의공중보건학회) 2015 예방수의학회지 Vol.39 No.1
Abstract: A colonic enterolith was necropsied in an 11-year-old pony with a 2-week history of mild, intermittent colic. Theenterolith was in the distal portion of the large intestine. A 2.1-kg, greenish-gray, rugby ball-sized (19 cm × 15 cm × 12 cm)stone was extracted from the intestine. Analysis of the component elements revealed 100% magnesium ammonium phosphate(struvite). Enterolithiasis commonly affects Arabian horses, and most horses with enteroliths are ~10 years of age. Enterolithiasis is associated with recurrent colic. This is the first report of a colonic stone in a pony.

Objective We developed a fully automated smartphone-based stress management application and explored its usability, potential feasibility, and preliminary efficacy for stress management in Korean employees. Methods: Healthy employees working in large public enterprises were enrolled. Participants used our automated stress management application for four weeks. With the application, they monitored their stress level and life style factors. Personalized stress management techniques, including psychoeducation and cognitive behavioral technique, were also provided based on their stress level and lifestyle pattern. In 2014, additional relaxation techniques were incorporated. Participants’ mental health status and lifestyle pattern were self-assessed at baseline and at 4 weeks after using the application. Results: A total of 68 subjects were recruited. The application generally received high satisfaction rating. After the intervention, perceived stress level was significantly decreased, both in 2013 and 2014 (BEPSI-K score pre. vs. post. 14.27 vs. 11.00, F=12.49, p=0.001 in 2013; 12.05 vs. 10.00, F=17.18, p<0.001). In 2014, depression symptom severity was also significantly decreased (CES-D score pre- vs. Post-, 17.66 vs. 11.95, F=9.76, p=0.004). The effects were more significant in females and in those <35 years. Conclusion: Our fully automated stress management application is acceptable and usable, showing preliminary efficacy for reducing employees’ stress levels.
