The Experiments for the Enhancement of Regression Rate of Hybrid Rocket Fuel

Many studies have been conducted to increase regression rate of solid fuel in hybrid rocket. One of them resorts to swirl flow since it can extend the residence time of oxidizer in the fuel grain. Also, metal wires may lead to increase the regression rate of solid fuel as shown in solid propellants. In this study, a series of experiments was designed to investigate the enhancement of regression rate of solid fuel by embedded metal wires and by fuel port grain. And fuel port was designed with a helical configuration to attempt to induce swirl flow. PMMA with gaseous oxygen is the solid fuel used for investigation. Test results showed that embedded metal wires turned out to be ineffective method because only $3-4\%$ increases in regression rate were observed. However, fuel port grain configuration yields higher burning performance of up to $50\%$ increase in regression rate. Also pitch number as well as total impulse was found to be a design variable.

To understand various aspects related to regeneration methods and tending practices for Quercus mongolica-Abies holophylla natural mixed stands, the vertical structure and horizontal distribution of Abies holophylla, the Korean fir, in disturbed mixed stands were investigated. Seedling and sapling advance regenerations of Abies holophylla were found on the forest floor beneath high shade from a mixed broad leaved forest canopy. These seedlings and saplings were showed the suspended growth from and grew very little for an extended time as about 5cm in height with the age of 10 years old, 1.2cm in height with 50 years old, and 2m in height with 60-70 years old. The horizontal distribution of seedlings and saplings of Abies holophylla was subject to restriction by the Sasa borealis(Hack). Makino, condition of soil moisture, boggy ground, and exposed rocks. Because of no appearance of Abies holophylla individual trees between 50 to 110 years old at diameter height(DBH) age(between 100 to 160 years old at collar age)in this stand, we could presume that a disturbance occurred during these periods. However, we could not estimate the magnitude of the disturbance to this natural mixed stand. Silvicultural system associated with regeneration methods and tending practices for this Quercus mongolica-Abies holophylla natural mixed stand are also discussed. These include : 1) possibility of selection method application, 2) time of release from overstory broad leaved tree canopy for growth promotion of Abies holophylla advance regenerations, 3) possibility of Abies holophylla as advance planting for the species of under planting in natural mixed broad leaved forest.

N/A OK-432 has been shown to have antitumor activity in cancer patients, and intrapleural injection of OK-432 had also been shown to cause reduction or disappearance of pleural effusions and/or tumor cells in pleural effusions of cancer patients. Forty patients with malignant pleural effusions were treated with intrapleural administration of OK-432. Their age ranged from 20 to 80 years with a median of 56 years, and the male to female ratio was 24:16. Primary tumor sites were lung in 30 patients, stomach in 3, colon in 1, ovary in 1, and 5 patients had adenocarcinoma of unknown primary site. Cytologic examinations of pleural fluid were positive in 30 patients, and 10 patients without cytologic proof had exudative effusions with elevated levels of carcinoembryonic antigen. Their performance status was ECOG grade 1 in 9, 2 in 18, and 3 in 13 patients. One to three courses of intrapleural injection of OK-432 were tried weekly (mean 1.3 courses) without any concomitant anticancer treatment. The responses were categorized as objective response or failure. Seven patients were not evaluable for response because of early death without pleural effusion in two, protocol violation in one, and lost to follow-up in four. Twenty-four patients (72.7%) achieved objective responses among 33 evaluable patients. Response duration ranged from 4+ to 59 weeks with a median of 52 weeks. Common toxicities included fever and chill (38/52 courses), and pleuritic chest pain (24/52), but those symptoms were tolerable. These results show that intrapleural administration of OK-432 appears to be effective in the control of malignant pleural effusions with acceptable toxicity.

P. marneffei is a fungus that causes life-threatening disseminated infection in a geographically distinct areas of the world. Following the first case of human infection in 1959, the incidence of this infection has risen markedly during the past 5 years. However, even in the midst of such rapid increase, the infection has always occurred only in a limited geographic distributions or in persons who have visited this limited geographic areas. These areas include Myanmar, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, and the Guangxi province of southern China. P. marneffei infection occurs mostly in immunocompromised patients, particularly AIDS patients. P. marneffei infection commonly presents with skin and subcutanous tissue infection, fungemia, diarrhea, bone marrow infection, and generalized lymphadenopathy with hepatosplenomegaly. We report the case of continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis caused by P. marneffei. The case occurred in Korea, a non-endemic area of P. marneffei, in a non-AIDS patient who has not been exposed to any of the endemic areas. This warrants further consideration in determining the yet unknown transmission route of this fungal organism. P. marneffei was diagnosed without delay by 18sRNA PCR and sequencing, and was later confirmed by culture. PCR and sequencing may contribute to the early diagnosis of the P. marneffei infection, which is important given this infection`s ability to progress to a systemic infection with high mortality rate when diagnosis and management are delayed.
