Secretory leukocyte protease inhibitor (SLPI) plays an important role in promoting the invasion and metastasis of a range of cancer cells. However, there are no reports of the expression and function of SLPI in oral carcinoma cells. In this study, the oral carcinoma cell line KB was used to determine whether SLPI affects the proliferation, migration and invasion of oral carcinoma cells. RT-PCR and Western blotting revealed high levels of endogenous SLPI expression in KB cells as well as a strong increase in SLPI secretion after wounding compared to immortalized normal oral keratinocytes (INOK). The wound healing assay revealed more migration of KB cells than INOK cells, and the SLPI treatment increased the migration of KB cells. KB cell proliferation was increased significantly by the SLPI protein but decreased by SLPI-siRNA. SLPI strongly increased the migration and invasion of KB cells. On the other hand, SLPI-siRNA decreased the migration and invasion of KB cells. This suggests that SLPI plays an important role in the metastasis of oral carcinoma cells.

Background: Virtual reality (VR) programs based on motion capture camera are the most convenient and cost-effective approaches for remote rehabilitation. Assessment of physical function is critical for providing optimal VR rehabilitation training; however, direct muscle strength measurement using camera-based kinematic data is impracticable. Therefore, it is necessary to develop a method to indirectly estimate the muscle strength of users from the value obtained using a motion capture camera. Objects: The purpose of this study was to determine whether the pedaling speed converted using the VR engine from the captured foot position data in the VR environment can be used as an indirect way to evaluate knee muscle strength, and to investigate the validity and reliability of a camera-based VR program. Methods: Thirty healthy adults were included in this study. Each subject performed a 15-second maximum pedaling test in the VR and built-in speedometer modes. In the VR speedometer mode, a motion capture camera was used to detect the position of the ankle joints and automatically calculate the pedaling speed. An isokinetic dynamometer was used to assess the isometric and isokinetic peak torques of knee flexion and extension. Results: The pedaling speeds in VR and built-in speedometer modes revealed a significantly high positive correlation (r = 0.922). In addition, the intra-rater reliability of the pedaling speed in the VR speedometer mode was good (ICC [intraclass correlation coefficient] = 0.685). The results of the Pearson correlation analysis revealed a significant moderate positive correlation between the pedaling speed of the VR speedometer and the peak torque of knee isokinetic flexion (r = 0.639) and extension (r = 0.598). Conclusion: This study suggests the potential benefits of measuring the maximum pedaling speed using 3D depth camera in a VR environment as an indirect assessment of muscle strength. However, technological improvements must be followed to obtain more accurate estimation of muscle strength from the VR cycling test.

Wang, Ke,Jin, Seon-Mi,Xu, Jiangping,Liang, Ruijing,Shezad, Khurram,Xue, Zhigang,Xie, Xiaolin,Lee, Eunji,Zhu, Jintao American Chemical Society 2016 ACS NANO Vol.10 No.5
<P>In this report, we demonstrate the confined assembly of polymer-tethered gold nanorods in anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) channels with the assistance of electric field (EF). Various interesting hybrid assemblies, such as single-, double-, triple-, or quadruple-helix, linear, and hexagonally packed structures are obtained by adjusting pore size in AAO channels, ligand length, and EF orientation. Correspondingly, surface plasmonic property of the assemblies can thus be tuned. This strategy, by coupling of external-field and cylindrically confined assembly, is believed to be a promising approach for generating ordered hybrid assemblies with hierarchical structures, which may find potential applications in photoelectric devices, biosensors, and data storage devices.</P>

Aims: The treatment responses of advanced hepatocellular carcinoma( HCC) with portal vein tumor thrombosis(PVTT) were not acceptable and treatment modalities were limited. So, we compared effects and safety of sorafenib vs. hepatic arterial infusion chemotherapy( HAIC). Methods: We prospectively collected data of 58 advanced HCC with PVTT patients whose Child-Turcotte-Pugh(CTP) score range 5 to 7 in 6 university hospitals from January 2013 to Oct 2015. Each twenty nine patients were treated with sorafenib or HAIC. Results: 1. The mean age was 60.2±8.4 years old and 89.7% of the patients were male. Causes of HCC were HBV (67.3%), HCV (8.6%), alcohol (19.0%) and others (5.2%). CTP class A was 89.7%, modified Union for International Cancer Control (mUICC) stage IVa was 63.8%, tumor diameter >10cm was 55.2%, multiple tumor was 60.3%, infiltrative type was 56.9%, main PVTT was 63.8%, median AFP value was 240.4 ng/ml. 2. 29 patients were enrolled to each groups. Baseline characteristics( sex, mean age, cause of HCC, mUICC stage, size of tumor, number of tumor, type of tumor(nodular, massive, infiltrative, diffuse), location of PVTT(main, main+branch, branch). CTP class, median value of AFP) has no significant difference between two groups. 3. The objective response rate was 38.1% in HAIC and 4.5% in sorafenib group (p=0.003). In univariate analysis, treatment modality, main portal vein invasion, objective response, massive tumor type were significant prognostic factors of overall survival (p=0.012, 0.046, 0.011, 0.041) and treatment modality, tumor number, massive tumor type were significant prognostic factors of time to progress (p=0.004, 0.043, <0.01). In multivariate analysis, objective response was a significant prognostic factor of overall survival (p=0.048) and treatment modality was a significant prognostic factor of time to progress (p=0.016). 4. Major complications were neutropenia (6.9%, more than grade 3) and catheter-related complication (3.4%) in HAIC group, hand-foot syndrome (20.7%) and diarrhea (3.4%) in sorafenib group. Conclusions: For treatment of advanced HCC with PVTT patient, HAIC can be a valuable treatment modality like as sorafenib and more large size of study is needed.

Particulate matters (PM), the main contributor to air pollution, have become a serious issue that threatens human’s health. Skin is the largest organ in humans, as well as the primary organ exposed to PM. Overexposure of PM induces skin damage. Diphlorethohydroxycarmalol (DPHC), an algal polyphenol with the potential of skin protection, has been isolated from the edible brown seaweed Ishige okamurae. The purpose of the present study is to investigate the protective eect of DPHC against PM (ERM-CZ100)-induced skin damage in human dermal fibroblasts (HDF) cells. The results indicated that DPHC significantly and dose-dependently reduced intracellular reactive oxygen species generation in HDF cells. In addition, DPHC significantly induced collagen synthesis and inhibited collagenase activity in ERM-CZ100-stimulated HDF cells. Further study demonstrated that DPHC remarkably reduced the expression of human matrix metalloproteinases through regulation of nuclear factor kappa B, activator protein 1, and mitogen-activated protein kinases signaling pathways in ERM-CZ100-stimulated HDF cells. This study suggested that DPHC is a potential candidate to protect skins against PM-induced damage, and it could be used as an ingredient in pharmaceutical and cosmeceutical industries.
Spontaneous regression with halo phenomenon in congenital melanocytic nevus after staging operations
( You Jin Jung ),( Ju Wang Jang ),( Dong Uk Cheon ),( Won Seon Koh ),( Jeong Eun Kim ),( Joo Yeon Ko ),( Young Suck Ro ) 대한피부과학회 2019 대한피부과학회 학술발표대회집 Vol.71 No.1
Congenital melanocytic nevus (CMN) is a neural crest derived hamartoma, which appears at or soon after birth. CMN has a dynamic course and may show variable changes, including spontaneous regression. Spontaneous involution with a halo is a rare phenomenon. The mechanism is suggested to be a destruction of melanocytes by immune responses of cytotoxic T cells or IgM autoantibodies and it may be triggered by UV radiation or local trauma. A 9-year-old boy presented with a 4.5x3 cm sized solitary brownish to blackish patch on right forearm which appeared since birth. Biopsy specimen showed cords and nests of nevus cells in the entire dermis, and infiltration of nevus cells in adnexal-centric fashion. Based on these findings, he was diagnosed with CMN. After the first incisional biopsy, halo was appeared around the lesion and after the second incisional biopsy, the lesion showed spontaneous involution especially around suture sites. From the histologic findings, involuted lesions revealed perivascular cellular infiltration composed of lymphohistiocytes and decreased nevus cells. After the sixth incisional biopsy, his lesion was completely disappeared. Herein, we report an interesting case in which surgical procedures act as a triggering factor to CMN regression accompanied by a halo phenomenon.

Background/Aims: The purpose of this study was to compare the diagnostic validity of two-dimensional (2D) and three-dimensional (3D) ultrasonography (US) when predicting the extrathyroidal extension of papillary thyroid cancer. Methods: All 2D data were interpreted in real time and 3D data were stored, rendered using tomographic ultrasound imaging (TUI), and then reviewed retrospectively. Results: Extrathyroidal extension was present in 17 papillary thyroid cancers 24.3%) on pathology reports. The presence of contact was significantly associated with extrathyroidal extension on both 2D and 3D US (p = 0.007 and p = 0.003), and the sensitivity and specificity were not significantly different between 2D and 3D US (p = 1.000 and p = 0.754). The coexistence of protrusion and contact was not significantly associated with extrathyroidal extension on either 2D or 3D sonogram. Conclusions: Three-dimensional images rendered with TUI algorithms alone do not seem to be markedly superior to real-time 2D US in predicting the extrathyroidal extension of papillary thyroid cancer.
