Graphical Approaches for Planning ExperimentsHigh Resolution Linear Graphs for ThreeLevel Designs
Lee, Sang-Heon Military Operations Research Society of Korea 2003 한국국방경영분석학회지 Vol.29 No.2
The lack of consideration for statistical properties in Taguchi's threelevel linear graphs is rectified. We propose a new set of linear graphs for the threelevel orthogonal arrays according to the maximum resolution criterion. In the presence of twofactor interactions however, the serious bias of all the estimated effects as well as the estimated variance shows that these designs should not be employed. The various alternative designs are discussed.

The first ever demonstration of a cable‐type lithium ion battery architecture with outstanding omni‐directional flexibility is described by Je Young Kim, Heon‐Cheol Shin, and co‐workers on page 5192. The Front Cover image illustrates the unique battery architecture comprising a skeleton frame surrounding an empty space, that is, a hollow‐spiral anode with a multi‐helical structure. This design enables the battery to reliably power an LED screen or an MP3 player even under severe mechanical twisting and bending.

The technological effects of Makgeolli lees fiber (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0%) on chicken salt-soluble breast meat proteins in a model system on proximate composition, physicochemical properties, and textural properties were investigated. Makgeolli lees fiber was obtained from Makgeolli brew processing, and the by-products showed good dietary fiber. The moisture and ash contents, water holding capacity, redness, yellowness, hardness, and apparent viscosity of chicken salt-soluble meat protein heat-induced gel systems with Makgeolli lees fiber were all higher than the control without Makgeolli lees fiber. However, protein solubility and electrophoretic patterns did not differ among the control and treatments with Makgeolli lees fiber samples. The chicken salt-soluble protein heat-induced gel systems incorporating Makgeolli lees fiber had improved water holding capacity, textural properties, and viscosity due to Makgeolli lees fiber addition. These results suggest that the addition of 4.0% Makgeolli lees fiber to gel is helpful to improve the physical properties of heat-induced gels.

Antioxidant Activity of Brown Soybean Ethanolic Extracts and Application to Cooked Pork Patties
Lee, Choong-Hee,Hwang, Ko-Eun,Kim, Hyun-Wook,Song, Dong-Heon,Kim, Yong-Jae,Ham, Youn-Kyung,Choi, Yun-Sang,Jang, Sung-Jin,Jeong, Tae-Jun,Kim, Cheon-Jei Korean Society for Food Science of Animal Resource 2016 한국축산식품학회지 Vol.36 No.3
The brown soybean extract (BE, extracted by distilled water, 50%, 75%, and 95% ethanol) were analyzed for their total phenol, flavonoid, anthocyanin content, and DPPH radical-scavenging activity to determine antioxidant activities. Brown soybean extract with 75% ethanol showed significantly higher DPPH radical scavenging activity, total phenol and anthocyanin content compared to the other treatments (p<0.05). Then, brown soybean extract with 75% ethanol was applied to pork patties at different concentration (0.05%, 0.1%, and 0.2%) and lipid oxidation was evaluated during 15 d of refrigerated storage. Addition of BE significantly increased redness and pH values, respectively (p<0.05). Moreover, TBARS value of pork patties decreased significantly (p<0.05) as BE concentration increased. In sensory evaluation, pork patties with 0.1% BE had significantly higher score than other treatments in flavor and overall acceptability (p<0.05). Consequently, these results indicate that 0.1% BE could be an effective natural antioxidant to inhibit lipid oxidation in pork patties.
Multilevel Data Storage Memory Using Deterministic Polarization Control

Multilevel non‐volatile memory for high‐density date storage is achieved by using the deterministic control of ferroelectric polarization. In a real ferroelectric thin‐film system, eight stable and reproducible polarization states are realized (i.e., 3‐bit data storage) by adjusting the displacement current. This approach can be used to triple or quadruple the memory density, even at existing feature scales.

Background: Postoperative venous thromboembolism (VTE) is a fatal condition in patients undergoing surgical procedure. The incidence of VTE and the usefulness of Caprini risk scoresfor predicting VTE in head and neck surgery have not been well established in Korean patients. Methods: In a prospective design, we enrolled subjects who underwent head and neck surgery from January to March 2013. Clinical characteristics and Caprini score were assessed at the day of operation. The development of VTE was monitored for the following 3 months after surgery. Results: Of 364 enrolled subjects, nine patients were identified to have VTE. The 3-month incidence rate of VTE in head and neck surgery was 2.5%. Three of these patients were in fatal condition requiring emergency embolectomy and one of them underwent extracorporeal membrane oxygenation before embolectomy. Caprini score in VTE patients was significantly higher than those without VTE (8.1 ± 5.1 vs. 3.9 ± 1.9, P = 0.048). Receiver-operating characteristic curve analysis revealed that the diagnostic accuracy of Caprini score was high with an area under the curve of 0.868 ±0.035. Conclusion: The incidence of VTE in patients with head and neck surgery was 2.47%. The Caprini risk score was useful in selecting high risk patients for VTE in head and neck surgery.
The Longitudinal Trend of Cardiac Surgery in Korea from 2003 to 2013
Lee, Kyeong Soo,Kim, Chang Suk,Park, Jong Heon,Hwang, Tae Yoon,Kim, Sang Won,Sim, Sung Bo,Lee, Kun Sei The Korean Society for Thoracic and Cardiovascular 2016 The Korean Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Vol.49 No.sup
Background: The purpose of this study was to investigate longitudinal changes of the utilization of operational and surgical medical care inside and outside a metropolitan area over 10 years, analyzing the residential areas of patients and the locations of medical facilities for major cardiovascular surgery. Methods: Data analysis was conducted by classifying the addresses of patients and the locations of medical care facilities of metropolitan cities and provinces, using data from the National Health Insurance Corporation from January 2003 to December 2013. Results: There is serious concentration of major heart surgery to medical facilities in Seoul; this problem has not improved over time. There were differences in percentages of surgical procedures performed in the metropolitan areas according to major diseases. In the case of Busan and Daegu provinces, at least 50% of the patients underwent surgery in medical facilities in the city, but there are other regions where the percentage is less than 50%. In the case of provinces, the percentage of surgical procedures performed in medical facilities in Seoul or nearby metropolitan cities is very high. Conclusion: Policies to strengthen the regional capabilities of heart surgery and to secure human resources are required to mitigate the concentration of patients in the capital area. Many regional multi-centers must be designated to minimize unnecessary competition among regional university hospitals and activate a win-win partnership model for medical services.
