Uterine arteriovenous malformations are very rare but potentially life threatening lesions. These lesions may be congenital or acquired, but especially occur in patients with a history of curettage, abortion or pregnancy. Color doppler ultrasonography is the preferred method of diagnosing of arteriovenous malformations. In many cases, hysterectomies are performed. But if patients want pregnancies, embolization therapy and conservative treatment are effective therapy. We have experienced a clinical case of uterine arteriovenous malformation, which is presented with a brief review of literature.

The high-throughput identification and accurate quantification of proteins are essential strategies for exploring cellular functions and processes in quantitative proteomics. Stable isotope tagging is a key technique in quantitative proteomic research, accompanied by automated tandem mass spectrometry. For the differential proteome analysis of mouse neuronal cell lines, we used a multiplexed isobaric tagging method, in which a four-plex set of amine-reactive isobaric tags are available for peptide derivatization. Using the four-plex set of isobaric tag for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) reagents, we analyzed the differential proteome in several stroke time pathways (0, 4, and 8 h) after the mouse neuronal cells have been stressed using a glutamate oxidant. In order to obtain a list of the differentially expressed proteins, we selected those proteins which had apparently changed significantly during the stress test. With 95% of the peptides showing only a small variation in quantity before and after the test, we obtained a list of eight up-regulated and four down-regulated proteins for the stroke time pathways. To validate the iTRAQ approach, we studied the use of oxidant stresses for mouse neuronal cell samples that have shown differential proteome in several stroke time pathways (0, 4, and 8 h). Results suggest that histone H1 might be the key protein in the oxidative injury caused by glutamate-induced cytotoxicity in HT22 cells.
Indeterminate leprosy presented as a hypoaesthetic ill-defined whitish patch

Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease caused by Mycobacterium leprae, which primarily affects the skin and peripheral nerves. Indeterminate leprosy is the early phase of Hansen disease before the host makes a definitive immunologic commitment. A 23-year old male patient from Sri-Lanka presented with a hypoaestheticskin lesion on his right elbow which had been present for 2 years. It had started as a small whitish macule but progressed to an ill-defined large scaly whitish patch (5cm x 5 cm). There was no thickening and/or tenderness of ulnar and radial nerve. There was no family history of leprosy or any apparent preceding immune suppression or trauma prior to development of the skin lesion. Lepromin test was negative. Histopathological examination of a biopsy taken from the lesion showed patchy lymphohistiocytic infiltrate around the skin appendage and dermal nerve and perivascular area. No epithelioid granulomatous infiltration was found and no acid-fast bacilli (AFB) were detected in the section after Fite-AFB staining. Polymerase chain reaction testing for M. leprae was negative. PGL-1 antibody test was also performed but the result was negative. We clinically diagnosed indeterminate leprosy and administered rifampin 600mg, ofloxacin 400mg, and minocycline 100mg daily for 6 months. At present, the skin lesion shows partial improvement and sensory anomaly has subsided.
Role of Ca<SUP>2</SUP> in the Stimulation of Glucose Transport by Insulin in Adipocytes

<P> We investigated the role of Ca<SUP>2</SUP> and protein kinases/phosphatases in the stimulatory effect of insulin on glucose transport. In isolated rat adipocytes, the simple omission of CaCl<SUB>2</SUB> from the incubation medium significantly reduced, but did not abolish, insulin-stimulated 2-deoxy glucose (2-DG) uptake. Pre-loading adipocytes with intracellular Ca<SUP>2</SUP> chelator, 5,5 -dimethyl bis (<I>o</I>-aminophenoxy)ethane-N,N,N N tetraacetic acetoxymethyl ester (5,5 -dimethyl BAPTA/AM) completely blocked the stimulation. Insulin raised intracellular Ca<SUP>2</SUP> concentration ([Ca<SUP>2</SUP>]<I><SUB>i</SUB></I>) about 1.7 times the basal level of 72⁑5 nM, and 5,5 -dimethyl BAPTA/AM kept it constant at the basal level. This correlation between insulin-induced increases in 2-DG uptake and [Ca<SUP>2</SUP>]<I><SUB>i</SUB></I> indicates that the elevation of [Ca<SUP>2</SUP>]<I><SUB>i</SUB></I> may be prerequisite for the stimulation of glucose transport. Studies with inhibitors (ML-9, KN-62, cyclosporin A) of Ca<SUP>2</SUP>-calmodulin dependent protein kinases/phosphatases also indicate an involvement of intracellular Ca<SUP>2</SUP>. Additional studies with okadaic acid and calyculin A, protein phosphatase-1 (PP-1) and 2A (PP-2A) inhibitors, indicate an involvement of PP-1 in insulin action on 2-DG uptake. These results indicate an involvement of Ca<SUP>2</SUP>-dependent signaling pathway in insulin action on glucose transport.

Understanding the damage mechanism in materialsis one of the very important subjects in the science and engineer-ing field. The microstructural change, microcracking, which causesmaterial strength deterioration, is usually termed as damage. Wegrained granite specimen under uniaxial compressive stress to bet-ter understand the fundamental problems of the true damage pro-cess at a micro to macro scale. With the use of an experimentalsystem, the continuous observation of the damage process alsoenabled us to clarify micro-damage in great detail. The results indi-cate that the mechanisms of micro-damage initiation in a granitespecimen under uniaxial compressive stres may be separated intotwo cases; the first in which two grains, such as quartz and feld-and the second in which a biotite grain inclined to the axial stressdirection is contained within a feldspar grain. The damage isstrongly localized for both cases and some shear zones are foundin the specimens.

소바구미과(Anthribidae)는 현재까지 15속 18종이 우리 나라에 기록되어 있다. 조사 결과 Enedreytes gotoi Shibata, Sympaector rugirostris (Sharp), Litocerus securus(Boheman)와 Rhaphitropis truncatoides Morimoto는 미기록종이다. 이로서 우리 나라의 소바구미과는 총 19속 22종이 된다. Eighteen species in 15 genera of anthribids have been reported from Korea. Four species of anthribids, Enedreytes gotoi Shibata, Sympaector rugirostris (Sharp), Litocerus securus (Boheman), and Rhaphitropis truncatoides Morimoto are added to the list for the first time in Korea. Thus Korean anthribids fauna have 22 species in 19 genera.
