Purpose: To investigate the efficacy and detection rate of disease in the customized eye examination program. Methods: We reviewed the medical charts of 122 patients who have conducted the customized eye examination program from January 2018 to January 2019 in Kim’s Eye Hospital retrospectively. The customized eye examination program consisted of visual acuity test, intraocular pressure measurement, color vision test, slit-lamp examination, visual field tests, fundus photography, spectral domain optical coherence tomography (Cirrus HD-OCT, Zeiss), Optical Quality Analysis System (OQAS, Visiometrics, Terrassa, Spain), and dry eye test (LipiView II TearScience, Morrisville, NC, USA). The rate of newly diagnosed diseases and vision-threatening disorders including glaucoma and retinal disorders were calculated. Results: A total of 122 patients (46 males and 76 females, mean age; 47.8 ± 14.0 years old, from 22 to 85 years) were included. Nine patients (14 eyes) had a poor vision of less than 0.8. Newly detected diseases were found in 17 patients (13.9%), and among them, 10 glaucoma (8.2%) and retinal disorders (5.7%) were included. When it comes to glaucoma, 7 patients were diagnosed with definite glaucoma with visual field loss, and 3 patients had preperimetric glaucoma. Retinal disorders were composed of 5 epiretinal membranes, 1 diabetic retinopathy, and 1 central serous chorioretinopathy. Conclusions: Various diseases were identified by the customized eye examination program, and vision-threatening diseases such as glaucoma and retinal disorders were found. Therefore, a regular eye examination is needed to detect the serious ocular diseases in the early stage.

Effects of physical and chemical treatments on chitosan viscosity were investigated. Chitosan viscosity was considerably affected by physical (grinding, heating, autoclaving, ultrasonication) and chemical (ozone) treatments, except for freezing, and decreased with an increase in treatment time and temperature. Freezing at -40℃ for 9 days did not affect the viscosity of chitosan solution. The chitosan solution stored at 4 and 23℃ for 61 days decreased in viscosity by 23 and 64%, respectively. This suggests that chitosan solution stored at 4t is relatively stable from a viscosity point of view.

<P>Abstract</P><P>Background and Aims</P><P>Alterations in the Doppler hepatic vein (HV) waveform are associated with cirrhosis and portal hypertension. We prospectively evaluated the correlation between the extent of abnormal Doppler HV waveforms expressed as damping index (DI) and the hepatic venous pressure gradient (HVPG) and response to propranolol in patients with cirrhosis.</P><P>Material and Methods</P><P>In 76 patients with cirrhosis (69 men and seven women), both DI of Doppler HV waveform and HVPG were measured, and the relationship between them was analysed. DI was calculated by the minimum velocity/maximum velocity of the HV waveform. An HVPG>12 mmHg was defined as severe portal hypertension. In a subgroup of 19 patients receiving propranolol, changes in both DI and HVPG were evaluated after propranolol administration for 3 months. One author (S. K. B.) performed all DI of Doppler HV waveform studies.</P><P>Results</P><P>Abnormal HV waveforms were seen in 66 of 76 patients (86.8%). DI significantly correlated with the grade of HVPG, i.e. with higher HVPG increased DI was observed (<I>P</I><0.01). By logistic regression analysis, DI>0.6 was significantly more likely to be severe portal hypertension (odds ratio: 14.19, 95% confidence interval: 4.07–49.55). Receiver-operating characteristic curve according to the value of 0.6 of DI showed a sensitivity of 75.9% and a specificity of 81.8% for the presence of severe portal hypertension. In 19 patients of the propranolol subgroup, change of DI following propranolol treatment also significantly correlated with that of HVPG (<I>P</I><0.01).</P><P>Conclusions</P><P>Damping index of the HV waveform by Doppler ultrasonography might be a non-invasive supplementary tool in evaluating the severity of portal hypertension and in responding to propranolol in patients with liver cirrhosis.</P>

Purpose: To evaluate the reproducibility of ImageJ software in analyzing the color of the optic disc. Methods: One hundred twelve normal participants (56 males and 56 females) were enrolled in this study. The image of the optic disc was taken using Kowa digital disc photo-graphy, and the gray scales of the nasal rim (NR), brightest cupping center (BCC) and largest inferior retinal vein (IRV) were calculated using histogram in ImageJ. Three different observers calculated the gray scales three separate times. Reproducibility was assessed using the interclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Results: The mean age of the participants was 50.6 years old (range, 11 to 82 years). The mean gray scales of the nasal rim were 91.81, 94.91, and 93.24; those of the brightest cupping center were 174.84, 179.94, and 177.76; and those of the largest inferior retinal vein were 61.85, 53.48, and 56.73 for observers 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Inter-observer reproducibility for NR, BCC and IRV was considered good based upon ICC values of 0.944, 0.860, and 0.789 for observers 1, 2, and 3, respectively. Significant age-related differences between the values of the brightest cupping center were noted, and the gray scale score was decreased in the older participants (p<0.001). Conclusions: The gray scale of the brightest cupping center diminished with age. ImageJ can be a useful objective tool with high reproducibility in the analysis of optic disc color.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We demonstrate the fabrication of a MnO<I> x </I>/carbamide carbon nanofiber (CCNF) composite consisting of MnO particles embedded in CCNFs as a highly flexible and freestanding electrode material for supercapacitors. A sacrificial polymer component, polymethylmethacrylate, included in the precursor solution, pyrolyzes during heating, resulting in pores in the fibers, some of which are filled by the MnO nanocrystals. Carbamide is added to control the size of the MnO<I> x </I> particles as well as to increase the carbon content of the composite and hence its conductivity. The X-ray diffraction and Raman spectra of the composite show that the MnO particles formed have low crystallinity. Transmission electron microscopy confirms that the MnO particles are distributed very uniformly over the CCNFs. Symmetric supercapacitors constructed using electrodes of this composite exhibit specific capacitances of 498F∙g−1 at a scan rate of 10mV∙s−1 and 271F∙g−1 at a current density of 1A∙g−1. They also exhibit excellent long-term cycling performance, retaining 93% of their initial capacity after 5000 cycles of galvanostatic charging/discharging.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> We successfully fabricated a novel flexible MnO/CCNF composite. </LI> <LI> Flexible MnO/CCNF showed excellent retention (93%) after 5000 cycles at 1Ag−1. </LI> <LI> MnO/CCNF composite demonstrated specific capacitance of 498Fg−1 at a scan rate of 10mVs−1. </LI> <LI> Dynamic MnO particle formation controlled by using carbamide. </LI> </UL> </P>
