Segmentation of fundamental heart sounds–S1 and S2 is important for automated monitoring of cardiac activity includingdiagnosis of the heart diseases. This pa-per proposes a novel hybrid method for S1 and S2 heart sound segmentation usinggroup sparsity denoising and variation mode decomposition (VMD) technique. In the proposed method, the measured phonocardiogram(PCG) signals are denoised using group sparsity algorithm by exploiting the group sparse (GS) property ofPCG signals. The denoised GS-PCG signals are then decomposed into subsequent modes with specifi c spectral characteristicsusing VMD algorithm. The appropriate mode for further processing is selected based on mode central frequencies and modeenergy. It is then followed by the extraction of Hilbert envelope (HEnv) and a thresholding on the selected mode to segmentS1 and S2 heart sounds. The performance advantage of the proposed method is verifi ed using PCG signals from benchmarkdatabases namely eGeneralMedical, Littmann, Washington, and Michigan. The proposed hybrid algorithm has achieved asensitivity of 100%, positive predictivity of 98%, accuracy of 98% and detection error rate of 1.5%. The promising resultsobtained suggest that proposed approach can be considered for automated heart sound segmentation.

This study was designed to investigate the protective role of pretreatment with graded doses of freshly pre-pared tomato paste against 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA)-induced genetic damage and oxidative stress in maleSwiss mice. The incidence of bone marrow micronuclei and the extent of hepatic lipid peroxidation and the antioxidants glu-tathione, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione S-transferase were monitored. Three different concentrations (0.5, 1, and 2g/kg body weight) of tomato paste were tested for their anticlastogenic effects against DMBA (35 mg/kg body weight). In-creased frequency of micronuclei and enhanced lipid peroxidation accompanied by compromised antioxidant defenses wereobserved in DMBA-treated animals. Pretreatment with all three doses of tomato paste significantly reduced the frequenciesof DMBA-induced micronuclei and oxidative stress. These findings demonstrate that administration of tomato paste protectsagainst the clastogenic effects of DMBA by decreasing lipid peroxidation and enhancing the antioxidant status.

We evaluated the comparative chemopreventive efficacy of green tea polyphenols (polyphenon-E) and blacktea polyphenols (polyphenon-B) on 7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA)-induced hamster buccal pouch (HBP) carcino-genesis. Lipid peroxidation, reduced and oxidized glutathione (GSH and GSSG, respectively), and the GSH-dependent en-zymes glutathione peroxidase and glutathione S-transferase in the erythrocytes were used as biomarkers of chemoprevention.Enhanced lipid peroxidation in erythrocytes of DMBA-treated animals was accompanied by a significant decrease in the an-tioxidant status. Dietary administration of polyphenon-E and -B to DMBA-treated animals significantly decreased the extentof lipid peroxidation and enhanced the levels of GSH, GSH/GSSG ratio, and activities of GSH-dependent enzymes. Our studyprovides evidence that polyphenon-B is more effective in inhibiting HBP carcinogenesis than polyphenon-E by enhancing theantioxidant status, suggesting that polyphenon-B may have a major impact in the chemoprevention of oral cancer.

The reproductive performance of forty two male broilers divided into three similar groups and fed on isocaloric and isonitrogneous diets containing 0, 10 or 20% water washed neem seed kernel meal (WWNSKM) was investigated from 20 to 32-wks of age. Results on semen characteristics revealed that feeding of WWNSKM led to significant (p < 0.05) reduction in semen volume, sperm concentration associated with increased incidences of morphological abnormalities in the spermatozoa when compared to that of the control birds. A drastic reduction in the fertilizing ability of spermatozoa was observed, the adverse effects being more at higher inclusion level of the cake. Hatchability of eggs also declined in the WWNSKM fed group. Histological examination of testes revealed a higher number of degenerating cells and poor spermatogenesis along with multinucleated giant cells in the seminiferous tubules of the testes of birds receiving the high dose of WWNSKM in diet. It may be concluded that the feeding of WWNSKM by incorporating in isocaloric and isonitrogneous diets to cockerels is associated with adverse effect on their fertility.

We investigated the effects of pretreatment with tomato, garlic, and turmeric, alone and in combination, against7,12-dimethylbenz[a]anthracene (DMBA)-induced genetic damage and oxidative stress in male Swiss mice. Measurement ofthe incidence of bone marrow micronuclei as well as the extent of lipid peroxidation and the status of the antioxidants re-duced glutathione, glutathione peroxidase, and glutathione-S-transferase in the liver and erythrocytes were used as biomark-ers of chemoprotection. In DMBA-treated animals, increased frequency of bone marrow micronuclei was accompanied by en-hanced lipid peroxidation and antioxidant depletion. Pretreatment with tomato, garlic, and turmeric alone and a combinationof these agents significantly reduced the frequencies of DMBA-induced bone marrow micronuclei as well as the extent oflipid peroxidation. These changes may be mediated by the antioxidant-enhancing effects of the dietary agents. The results ofthe present study suggest that a diet containing even low levels of different naturally occurring compounds is effective in ex-erting antigenotoxic effects by inhibiting DMBA-induced oxidative stress.

We described herein the importance of Ionic Liquids to synthesize in situ monodisperse copper nanoparticles with high surface area at room temperature. The in situ formed nanoparticles were characterized by Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), Energy-dispersive spectrometer (EDS) and X-ray powder diffraction (XRD) and shows excellent catalytic activity for cycloaddition reaction between azides with terminal alkynes to furnish 1,4-triazoles in excellent yields under mild conditions. The present catalytic system can take advantage of both ionic liquids and nanoparticles. The proposed catalytic system can minimize the time to synthesize copper nanoparticles with stabilizer and eliminates additional additives as well.

A recombinant Escherichia coli (pBAB1) containing styrene monooxygenase (SMO) was developed for the conversion of styrene to enantiopure (S)-styrene oxide that is an important chiral building block in organic synthesis. The styAB genes encoding SMO was cloned into a multicopy plasmid under the tightly regulated promoter of bacterial L-arabinose operon which is inducible by L-arabinose. The recombinant showed that expression level of StyA protein and whole-cell SMO activities were varied depending on the concentration of the inducer L-arabinose. The maximum SMO activity was 108 U/g cdw when the cells were induced with 0.2% L-arabinose. SDS-PAGE and Western blot analyses indicated that whole-cell SMO activity was strongly correlated with the expression level of StyA protein. Organic-aqueous two-phase experiment could yield 50 mM enantiopure (S)-styrene oxide in organic phase in 18 h, but the recombinant SMO activity was unstable during the reaction. The expression of styAB under the control of L-arabinose promoter was significantly repressed in the presence of glucose.

Aluminium alloy 6082-T6 plays a vital role in the fabrication of lightweight structures, especially for the manufacturing of artillery, defense vehicles, and aircraft. Aluminium alloy 6082-T6 is a well-known structural alloy having a high strength-to-weight ratio and favorable corrosion resistance properties in extreme environments. In this study, three friction stir welding (FSW) process parameters (spindle speed, weld speed, and shoulder penetration), two geometrical tool parameters to precisely describe the pin profile, and the shoulder profile were considered at five levels. Optimization was conducted using the Taguchi experimental design method, and FSW experiments were conducted in a conventional milling machine. The parameters were optimized to maximize the tensile strength for various plate thicknesses. The number of tool pin polygon edges determines the corresponding welding pulses. The results show that 105-110 pulses/s is an optimal value to achieve a high-quality, defect-free weld.
