      • Concrete-steel bond-slip behavior of recycled concrete: Experimental investigation

        In order to study the interfacial bond-slip behavior of steel reinforced recycled concrete (SRRC) under cyclic loading, thirteen specimens were designed and tested under cyclic loading and one under monotonic loading. The test results indicated that the average bond strength of SRRC decreased with the increasing replacement ratio of recycled concrete, whereas the bond strength increased with an increase in the concrete cover thickness, the volumetric stirrup ratio, and the strength of recycled concrete. The ultimate bond strength of the cyclically-loaded specimen was significantly (41%) lower than that of the companion monotonically-loaded specimen. The cyclic phenomena also showed that SRRC specimens went through the non-slip phase, initial slip phase, failure phase, bond strength degradation phase and residual phase, with all specimens exhibiting basically the same shape of the bond-slip curve. Additionally, the paper presents the equations that were developed to calculate the characteristic bond strength of SRRC, which were verified based on experimental results.

        Current Situations and Issues of Higher Special Education Institutions in China

        The purpose of this study is to clarify current situations and issues of higher special education institutions in China. Data were collected from 21 higher special education institutions with three methods: literature review, phone surveys and in-person interview. First, the results of this study showed that hearing impairment and visual impairment are two main types of disabilities of students receiving higher special education. On the other hand, only a few institutions have offered higher special education for students with other disabilities, such as physical disability, speech and language disabilities, and intellectual disability since 2015. Second, most institutions offer the undergraduate majors or vocational training programs, and they are more likely to have majors such as art, design and Chinese medicine. A small but growing numbers of institutions establish new majors such as teacher education, inclusive education majors, and graduate school for students with disabilities. Third, provinces with both higher GDP and more population have many higher special education institutions (e.g., Guangdong, Jiangsu, Shangdong, and Henan). On the other hand, Hainan, Ningxia, Qinghai and Xizang, with both lower GDP and less population, have no higher special education institutions at all. This study suggests that it is necessary to establish the related laws and policies for higher special education institutions (e.g., creating various majors for students with disabilities, compilation of special budget for students with other disabilities except for hearing impairment or visual impairment, and compilation of national budget for several provinces having no higher special education institutions).

        The Rapid and Efficient Synthesis of Bromohydrins from Olefins under HBr/H2O2 System by Visible Light Induced

        A simple and safe method has been presented for conversion of olefins into bromohydrins using hydrogen bromide and hydrogen peroxide as bromide source by visible light induced within a very short time to get high yield bromohydrins along with a little mount dibromo-product. In this paper, cyclohexene is firstly carried out as the model substrate and investigated the bromination under HBr/H2O2 system using 150 W incandescent light irradiated in CCl4 within short time to get good yield of 2-bromocyclohexanol along with a little mount of 1,2-dibromocyclohexane; then, a series of alkenes are brominated to corresponding bromohydrins using the same protocol.

      • Mechanical behavior of crumb rubber concrete under axial compression

        This paper aims at investigating the effect of crumb rubber size and content on compressive behaviors of concrete under axial compression. Concrete specimens are designed and produced by replacing natural aggregate with crumb rubber content of 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and three different sized crumb rubbers (No. 20, No. 40, No. 80 crumb rubber). And the failure mode, compressive strength, elastic modulus, stress-strain curves, peak strain and ultimate strain are experimentally studied. Based on the test results, formulas have been presented to determine the compressive strength, elastic modulus, the relationship between prism compressive strength and cube compressive strength, stress-strain curves and peak strain of crumb rubber concrete (CRC). It is found that the proposed formulas agree well with the test result on the whole, which may be used to practical applications.

        Paritaprevir ameliorates experimental acute lung injury in vitro and in vivo

        Paritaprevir is a potent inhibitor of the NS3/4A protease used to treat chronic hepatitis C virus infection. However, its therapeutic effect on acute lung injury (ALI) remains to be elucidated. In this study, we investigated the effect of paritaprevir on a lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced two-hit rat ALI model. The anti-ALI mechanism of paritaprevir was also studied in human pulmonary microvascular endothelial (HM) cells following LPS-induced injury in vitro. Administration of 30 mg/kg paritaprevir for 3 days protected rats from LPS-induced ALI, as reflected by the changes in the lung coefficient (from 0.75 to 0.64) and lung pathology scores (from 5.17 to 5.20). Furthermore, the levels of the protective adhesion protein VE-cadherin and tight junction protein claudin-5 increased, and the cytoplasmic p-FOX-O1 and nuclear β-catenin and FOX-O1 levels decreased. Similar effects were observed in vitro with LPS-treated HM cells, including decreased nuclear β-catenin and FOX-O1 levels and higher VE-cadherin and claudin-5 levels. Moreover, β-catenin inhibition resulted in higher p-FOX-O1 levels in the cytoplasm. These results suggested that paritaprevir could alleviate experimental ALI via the β-catenin/p-Akt/ FOX-O1 signaling pathway.

        Optimization of APE1547-catalyzed Enantioselective Transesterification of (R/S)-2-methyl-1-butanol in an Ionic Liquid

        Aeropyrum pernix esterase (APE1547) was successfully used to catalyze the enantioselective transesterification of (R/S)-2-methyl-1-butanol in an ionic liquid (IL). Effects of various reaction conditions on the synthetic activity of the enzyme as well as enantioselectivity, including the type of IL, acyl donor, temperature, water activity,and substrate molar ratio were inverstigated. APE1547showed good catalytic performance (activity > 0.8 μmol/min/mg, E > 25), and the enzyme-IL mixture was recycled five times with only a slight decrease in catalytic performance.

        Tenascin-C Produced by Oxidized LDL-Stimulated Macrophages Increases Foam Cell Formation through Toll-like Receptor-4

        Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease in which both innate and adaptive immunity are involved. Although there have been major advances in the involve-ment of toll-like receptor 4 (TLR4) and CD36 in the initiation and development of this disease, detailed mechanisms remain unknown. Here, we show that tenascin-C (TN-C) can stimulate foam cell formation and this can be inhibited by a TLR4-blocking antibody or CD36 gene silencing. Our results identify TN-C-TLR4 activation as a common molecular mechanism in oxLDL-stimulated foam cell formation and atherosclerosis. In addition, CD36 is the major scavenger receptor responsible for the TN-C-mediated foam cell formation. Taken together, we have identified that TN-C produced by oxLDL-stimulated macrophages increases foam cell formation through TLR4 and scavenger receptor CD36.

        Appearance-based gaze estimation with feature fusion of multi-level information elements

        Gaze estimation is a fundamental task in many applications of cognitive sciences, human–computer interaction, and robotics. The purely data-driven appearance-based gaze estimation methods may suffer from a lack of interpretability, which prevents their applicability to pervasive scenarios. In this study, a feature fusion method with multi-level information elements is proposed to improve the comprehensive performance of the appearance-based gaze estimation model. The multi-level feature extraction and expression are carried out from the originally captured images, and a multi-level information element matrix is established. A gaze conduction principle is formulated for reasonably fusing information elements from the established matrix. According to the gaze conduction principle along with the matrix, a multi-level information element fusion (MIEF) model for gaze estimation is proposed. Then, several input modes and network structures of the MIEF model are designed, and a series of grouping experiments are carried out on a small-scale sub-dataset. Furthermore, the optimized input modes and network structures of the MIEF model are selected for training and testing on the whole dataset to verify and compare model performance. Experimental results show that optimizing the feature combination in the input control module and fine-tuning the computational architecture in the feature extraction module can improve the performance of the gaze estimation model, which would enable the reduction of the model by incorporating the critical features and thus improve the performance and accessibility of the method. Compared with the reference baseline, the optimized model based on the proposed feature fusion method of multi-level information elements can achieve efficient training and improve the test accuracy in the verification experiment. The average error is 1.63 cm on phones on the GazeCapture dataset, which achieves comparable accuracy with state-of-the-art methods.
