Heme oxygenase (HO-1) catalyzes heme to carbon monoxide (CO), biliverdin/bilirubin, and iron and is known to prevent the pathogenesis of several human diseases. We assessed the beneficial effect of heme degradation products on osteoclastogenesis induced by receptor activator of NF-κB ligand (RANKL). Treatment of RAW264.7 cells with CORM-2 (a CO donor) and bilirubin, but not with iron, decreased RANKLinduced osteoclastogenesis, with CORM-2 having a more potent anti-osteogenic effect. CORM-2 also inhibited RANKLinduced osteoclastogenesis and osteoclastic resorption activity in marrow-derived macrophages. Treatment with hemin, a HO-1 inducer, strongly inhibited RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis in wild-type macrophages, but was ineffective in HO-1<sup>+/- </sup>cells. CORM-2 reduced RANKL-induced NFATc1 expression by inhibiting IKK-dependent NF-κB activation and reactive oxygen species production. These results suggest that CO potently inhibits RANKL-induced osteoclastogenesis by inhibiting redox-sensitive NF-κB-mediated NFATc1 expression. Our findings indicate that HO-1/CO can act as an antiresorption agent and reduce bone loss by blocking osteoclast differentiation. [BMB Reports 2017; 50(2): 103-108]
Coagulant와 Hydro-cyclone을 결합한 상향류식 여과시스템

Coagulation Hydro-cyclone can be added to the upward flow filtration system utilizing Fiber-Ball filter media to analyze and evaluate the treatment characteristics in order to Non-point pollution, which is a pollution problem, more efficiently. Hydro-cyclone was added to the existing Filter column to create an Up-Flow Filtration system. The treatment efficiency according to the operating conditions such as turbidity, suspended solids, pH, inflow flow rate, and head loss was analyzed. Comparison of inflow water and runoff water suspended solids and turbidity analysis results showed a minimum treatment efficiency of 93.21% and a maximum treatment efficiency of 99% or more. It was analyzed that the SS and turbidity analysis results showed a treatment efficiency of 80% or more before and after backwashing twice. When Coagulation Hydro-cyclone was added compared to the existing filtration system, it was analyzed that particles that had not been treated as an adsorption fiber company filter medium between particles could be treated.

The MBR method, also known as the membrane separation active sludge method, does not require a precipitation tank and has many advantages such as stable discharging water. The biggest disadvantages of the MBR method, which has many advantages, are maintenance problems due to reduced flux due to fouling, decreased processing efficiency, and membrane replacement. In this study, in order to reduce membrane pollution, membrane cleaning was performed using the washing principle of the airlift pump, and shear force according to the amount of air was analyzed using the Ansys Fluent computational fluid dynamics program. As a result of the analysis, the film recovery rate was 93.8% to 97.3% and the average was 95.8%, and the CFD analysis showed the highest shear force at about 5.425×10-2Pa at 10m3/m2/hr. It is believed that the MBR device using Airlift in this study can maximize the flux recovery rate by reducing the problem of membrane contamination.

This study concentrates an the trail of the CNU(Chungnam National University) forest. The amount of use and the pattern of damage are considered, as well as the extent of environmental damage. Finally, some managerial strategies are proposed in connection with sustainable maintenance. The trail of the university forest is composed of three sections; one is the neighborhood park and the Institute of Information Technology/Communications, the second is the Institute of Information Technology/Communications and the Dormitory, and the third section is the Dormitory and the Foreign prof's Apt. The total length of the trail is 2.6km. The daily amount of use is 1,269 visitors per day. The amount of using increased three times the amount of that in 1998. This study shows the pattern of damage of the trail in the order of root-exposure, widening, rock-exposure, deepening and the divergence in the frequency of occurrence of all these factors. Environmental damage is also graded thus: grade 3 is 27.4m, grade 4 is 0.8m, grade 5 is 1.5m, and grade 6 is 0.2m. Accordingly, some managerial strategies were proposed in connection with the sustainable trail maintenance.
Effect of Ecklonia cava Powder on Color and Texture of Sugar-Snap Cookies

Freeze-dried Ecklonia cava powder was incorporated into cookie dough at 5 levels (0%, 1.5%, 3%, 4.5%, and 6%, w/w) by replacing equivalent amount of wheat flour of the cookie dough. After aging and sheeting, cookies were baked at 185oC for 14 min in a convection oven. The baked cookies were cooled to room temperature for 30 min and packed in airtight bags prior to all measurements. Lightness (L*) decreased significantly as the E. cava powder content increased (p<0.05) and a decreasing trend in both redness (a*-value) and yellowness (b*-value) was observed. On the other hand, firmness increased significantly with an increase in E. cava powder content (p<0.05). Increases in E. cava powder concentration up to 6% in the cookie formulation significantly increased the intensities of all sensory attributes such as color, flavor, taste, and firmness (p<0.05). Correlation analysis indicated that the E. cava concentration correlated significantly with most of the properties except for a*-value (p<0.01, 0.05, or 0.001). Properties such as firmness and sensory color and firmness correlated positively while L*- and b*-values correlated negatively with E. cava concentration. Sensory color correlated negatively with L*- and b*-values. Sensory firmness correlated positively with mechanically measured firmness.

Transarterial chemoembolization (TACE) is a useful treatment option for hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). TACE can particularly be used as a treatment for localized HCC, where surgical resection is impossible due to decreased liver function. However, TACE is associated with several complications, including vascular complications, liver failure, non-target embolization, infection, and death. The main risk factor for complications after TACE is decreased liver function. There have been only few reports of brain abscesses after TACE that are difficult to be distinguished from hepatic encephalopathy. Here, we report a rare case of brain abscess caused by Klebsiella pneumoniae that occurred after TACE. (J Liver Cancer 2021;21:81-86)
Feasibility of laparoscopic sentinel basin dissection for limited resection in early gastric cancer

<B>Background</B><P>The clinical applications of sentinel node (SN) biopsies in early gastric cancer are limited because of low sensitivity. Sentinel basin (SB) dissection has been suggested as alternative to SN biopsy to improve sensitivity. The aim of this study was to examine the feasibility of laparoscopic SB dissection.</P><B>Methods</B><P>Twenty-one gastric adenocarcinoma patients of cT1N0 were enrolled. Technetium 99 m human serum albumin and indocyanine green were injected into the submucosal layer around tumor using an intraoperative endoscope. Green-stained or radioactive lymphatic basins were detected and defined as SBs. After laparoscopic SB dissection, laparoscopy-assisted gastrectomy with D2 lymphadenectomy was performed. Dissected SB nodes and non-SB nodes were evaluated for metastasis pathologically.</P><B>Results</B><P>The SB detection rate was 95.2%. Numbers of SBs were one in 6, two in 10, and three in 4 patients. The mean number of SB nodes was 7.0. Two patients with lymph node metastasis were diagnosed by SB dissection. Mean time of laparoscopic SB dissection procedure was 15.2 min.</P><B>Conclusions</B><P>Above findings suggest that laparoscopic SB dissection is technically feasible, and it might have better sensitivity than SN biopsy.
