        Relations between rheological and mechanical properties of fiber reinforced mortar

        Fresh and hardened behaviors of a new hybrid fiber (steel fiber, polyvinyl alcohol fiber and calcium carbonate whisker) reinforced cementitious composites (HyFRCC) with admixtures (fly ash, silica fume and water reducer) have been studied. Within the limitations of the equipment and testing program, it is illustrated that the rheological properties of the new HyFRCC conform to the modified Bingham model. The relations between flow spread and yield stress as well as flow rate and plastic viscosity both conform well with negative exponent correlation, justifying that slump flow and flow rate test can be applied to replace the other two as simple rheology measurement and control method in jobsite. In addition, for the new HyFRCC with fly ash and water reducer, the mathematical model between the rheological and mechanical properties conform well with the quadratic function, and these quadratic function curves are always concave upward. Based on mathematical analysis, an optimal range of rheology/ flowability can be identified to achieve ideal mechanical properties. In addition, this optimization method can be extended to PVA fiber reinforced cement-based composites.

        The relationship between reinforcing index and flexural parameters of new hybrid fiber reinforced slab

        In this paper, a new hybrid fiber system (NHFS) is investigated for the application of slab. The steel fiber, polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) fiber and calcium carbonate (CaCO3) whisker is added to form NHFS. The four-point bending test is carried out on the flexural properties of slab with plain, steel fiber, traditional hybrid fiber system (THFS) and NHFS reinforced cementitious composites. The flexural behavior is evaluated by ASTM C1018-97, JCI-SF4 and post-crack strength (PCS) technique. The evaluation parameters of flexural toughness such as toughness index (TI), equivalent flexural strength (EFS) and PCS are determined. The size of slab specimens is 15 mm (thickness)×50 mm (width)×200 mm (length). The results show that adding CaCO3 whisker to THFS can significantly improve the flexural strength, TI, EFS, PCS of the slab. The empirical relation between reinforcing index (RIv) and flexural parameters show that flexural parameters of slabs increase first and then decrease; which indicates that optimum RIv values can be helpful in the considering the mix design of steel-PVA fibers-CaCO3 whisker composites for achieving the desired flexural-related properties. The scanning electron microscopy is performed to observe the micro-morphological characteristics of the fracture surface, which proved the positive hybrid effect among the different fibers in cementitious composites. The NHFS can arrest the generation and propagation of the crack from micro to macro level.

        Evaluation of New Selective Molecularly Imprinted Polymers for the Extraction of Resveratrol from Polygonum Cuspidatum

        Four different molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) were prepared using resveratrol as the template, methacrylic acid (MAA) or acrylamide (AA) as functional monomers, 2,2-azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as the initiator, and thermo- or photo-induced polymerization. The ability of the different polymers to rebind selectively not only the template but also other phenols was evaluated. In parallel, the influence of the different templates and functional monomers used during polymer syntheses on the performance of the obtained MIPs was also studied through different rebinding experiments. The binding ability and selectivity of the polymer were studied by static balance method and Scatchard analysis. It was concluded that AA-based polymer by photo-induced polymerization presents the best properties to be used as a selective absorbent for the extraction of resveratrol.

      • Organ-sparing Surgery in Treating Patients with Liposarcoma of the Spermatic Cord: Institutional Experience and Pooled Analysis

        Background: Liposarcoma of the spermatic cord is rare and frequently misdiagnosed. The standard therapeutic approach has been radical inguinal orchiectomy with wide local resection of surrounding soft tissues. The current trend of organ preservation in the treatment of several cancers has started to evolve. Herein we present our testis-sparing surgery experience in the treatment of spermatic cord liposarcoma and a pooled analysis on this topic. Materials and Methods: Clinical information from patient receiving organ-sparing surgery was described. Clinical studies evaluating this issue were identified by using a predefined search strategy, e.g., Pubmed database with no restriction on date of published papers. The literature search used the following terms: epidemiology, surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, testis sparing surgery, spermatic cord sarcomas/liposarcomas. Results: Patient received a complete excision of the lesion, preserving the spermatic cord and the testis. The final pathological report showed a well differentiated liposarcoma with negative surgical margins and no signs of local invasion. After 2-year of follow-up, there was no evidence of local recurrence. Since the first case reported in 1952, a total of about 200 well-documented spermatic cord liposarcoma cases have been published in English literature. Among these patients, only three instances were reported to have received an organ-sparing surgery in the treatment of spermatic cord liposarcoma. Conclusions: Radical inguinal orchiectomy and resection of the tumor with a negative microscopic margin is the recommended treatment for liposarcoma of the spermatic cord. But for small, especially well-differentiated, lesions, testis-sparing surgery might be a good option if an adequate negative surgical margin is assured.

        Dual Mode Dual-Band Circularly Polarized Modified Square Ring Antenna

        This paper proposes a dual-band circularly polarized (CP) modifi ed square ring antenna. The resonate structure of this antenna consists of a modifi ed square ring patch and a ground plane, and the antenna is fed by a modifi ed L probe with two unequal branches. A low order CP mode (TM 11 Mode) and a high order CP mode (TM 12 Mode) are both excited in this simple structure for the dual band operation. The truncated corners of the ring and the embedded corners of the slot are used to obtain the dual band CP operation. The overall size of the antenna is 150 × 150 × 11.7 mm 3 . The measured 10-dB return loss bandwidths are 13.0% for the lower 2.45 GHz band and 37.4% for the upper 5.8 GHz band. The measured 3-dB axial ratio bandwidths are 2.1% and 5.8% for the lower band and upper band respectively. The measured peak gains of the lower band and upper band are 8.19 dBic and 9.44 dBic respectively.

        Ruthenium biochanin-A complex ameliorates lung carcinoma through the downregulation of the TGF-β/PPARγ/PI3K/TNF-α pathway in association with caspase-3-mediated apoptosis

        Lung cancer is the most often reported cancer with a terrible prognosis worldwide. Flavonoid metal complexes have exhibited potential chemotherapeutic effects with substantially low adverse effects. This study investigated the chemotherapeutic effect of the ruthenium biochanin-A complex on lung carcinoma in both in vitro and in vivo model systems. The synthesized organometallic complex was characterized via UV‒visible spectroscopy, FTIR, mass spectrometry, and scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, the DNA binding activity of the complex was determined. The in vitro chemotherapeutic assessment was performed on the A549 cell line through MTT assay, flow cytometry, and western blot analysis. An in vivo toxicity study was performed to determine the chemotherapeutic dose of the complex, and subsequently, chemotherapeutic activity was assessed in benzo-α-pyrene-induced lung cancer mouse model by evaluating the histopathology, immunohistochemistry, and TUNEL assays. The IC50 value of the complex in A549 cells was found to be 20 μM. The complex demonstrated significant apoptosis induction, enhanced caspase-3 expression and cell cycle arrest with downregulated PI3K, PPARγ, TGF-β, and TNF-α expression in A549 cells. The in vivo study suggested that ruthenium biochanin-A therapy restored the morphological architecture of lung tissue in a benzo-α-pyrene-induced lung cancer model and inhibited the expression of Bcl2. Additionally, increased apoptotic events were identified with upregulation of caspase-3 and p53 expression. In conclusion, the ruthenium biochanin-A complex successfully amelioratedlung cancer incidence in both in vitro and in vivo models through the alteration of the TGF-β/PPARγ/PI3K/TNF-α axis with the induction of the p53/caspase-3-mediated apoptotic pathway.

      • A Primary Permanent-Magnet Linear Motor for Urban Rail Transit

        In this paper, a new permanent-magnet (PM) linear motor is proposed, in which both the magnets and armature windings are placed in the short mover, while the long stator consists of iron core only. Hence, this new PM linear motor can be called a primary permanent-magnet linear motor. It exhibits the advantages of robustness, low cost, high efficiency, high power factor, and high thrust force density. It is especially suitable for long stator applications such as urban rail transit. In this paper, the topology and operation principle of this motor are discussed in detail. The steady-state characteristics including field distributions, flux-linkage, back-EMF, phase inductance and thrust force are investigated. In addition, the technique of skewing stator teeth is adopted to improve the electromagnetic performance. Results from finite element method (FEM) verified the theoretical analysis results.

        PRECONDITIONING FOR THE p-VERSION BOUNDARY ELEMENT METHOD IN THREE DIMENSIONS WITH TRIANGULAR ELEMENTS

        A preconditioning algorithm is developed in this paper for the iterative solution of the linear system of equations resulting from the p-version boundary element approximation of the three dimensional integral equation with hypersingular operators. The preconditioner is derived by first making the nodal and side basis functions locally orthogonal to the element internal bases, and then by decoupling the nodal and side bases from the internal bases. Its implementation consists of solving a global problem on the wire-basket and a series of local problems defined on a single element. Moreover, the condition number of the preconditioned system is shown to be of order $O((1+ln/p)^{7})$. This technique can be applied to discretization with triangular elements and with general basis functions.
