Estrogen is believed to decrease coronary artery disease. Protein kinase C-α(PKCα)appear to be important in signal conduction pathways. Estrogen treatment increases catalytic activity of PKCα,and activation of PKCαcan modulate estrogen receptor levels and responsiveness. And it was reported that activation of PKC can protect cells from apoptosis induced by Fas ligation. But the beneficial effect of estrogen on PKCαwas not clearly demonstrated. The objective of this study was to evaluate the role of PKCαafter ovariectomy and estrogen therapy in rat aorta. The results were summarized as below: 1. The significant pathological changes were not observed in the rat aorta irrelevant to ovariectomy and estrogen therapy. 2. The expression of Fas was decreased in the aorta of estrogen-treated rats than that of ovariectomized rats without estrogen therapy. 3. Increased expression of PKCαwas more marked in the aprta of estrogen-treated rats than that of ovariectomized rat without estrogen therapy. In conclusion,PKCαmay be important in signal conduation pathway on the effect of estrogen. Activation of PKCαby estrogen reduced Fas expression, suggesting that PKCαactivation may play a role in protection against atherasclerosis. Further studies are needed to elucidate the role of PKCαafter estrogen therapy.

This study was carried out to survey the state of growth, sustainable management, and improved plans of the village groves. The purpose of this study was to propose better methods of village grove management on 24 village groves of Kangwon and Kyungsang provinces. The main study field was classified into two parts. The one is cultural situation (historical backgrounds, user behaviour, development, land owners, managers, access, and parking) and the other is natural situation(growing condition, land condition, soil condition, and damage by blight and noxious insects) of Korean village groves. The data have been collected during the site survey. And then they were analyzed by frequency and cross tabulation analysis with SPSS 10 version. And they stand on roadsides, entrances of villages, riversides, and edge ways of the farmland. These groves are influenced by human actives, and vehicles. It diagnosed the current condition of the village groves with a field survey of the area. It analyzed natural condition(vegetation structure, land and soil, surrounding environment) of village groves and proposes better methods of facility, user, soil, plant, and tree management in order to improve natural conditions for them. The possibility of their sustenance can be determined from continuous management and program series, which involve recorded history, culture, importance of resources and ecological value etc.

Metal-ceramic system has been widely using for aesthetic dental prosthesis. Opaque porcelain is used fore the masking of the metallic color of coping and the enhancing of the bond strength between metal and porcelain for PFM system. Paste opaque is a new type of opaque porcelain to easily apply onto metal coping and to get uniform thickness and good bonding characteristics to metal. The paste opaque was prepared by mixing of powder opaque with organic substances for this study. Three kinds of paste opaque which are in market were selected to compare the particle size distribution and bond strength with the paste opaque prepared in this study. The particle size distributions of all paste opaques were measured by particle size analyser, and the bond strengths were examined by using universal testing machine. This study shows that the maximum size of all samples is under 50㎛ and Ceramco has the finest mean particle size. The bond strength of the prepared paste opaque is about 35 MPa, and it is satisfied with ISO standard(25MPa).

The antigenic potential of CFA-001, cefazolin, a cephalosporin derivative produced by an enzymatic semisynthesis, was determined in Hartley guinea pigs. A battery of tests employed consisted of active systemic anaphylaxis (ASA), passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA), and indirect hemagglutination test (IHA). The results were as follows: 1) In ASA, no signs attributable to anaphylaxis was observed in guinea pigs sensitized with CFA-001, whereas OVA-sensitized animals induced severe anaphylactic symptoms; 2) guinea pigs did not produce antibodies against CFA-001 when sensitized with or without Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) in homologous PCA tests. Meanwhile, antibodies against ovalbumin (OVA) were clearly detected; 3) No CFA-001-specific hemagglutination was observed in the IHA using sera obtained from CFA-001-sensitized guinea pigs. These results suggest that CFA-001 has no antigenicity potential in guinea pigs.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P><B>Purpose</B></P> <P>To develop a nomogram predicting the risks of distant metastasis following postoperative adjuvant radiation therapy for early stage cervical cancer.</P> <P><B>Materials and methods</B></P> <P>We reviewed the medical records of 1069 patients from ten participating institutions. Patients were divided into two cohorts: a training set (<I>n</I> =748) and a validation set (<I>n</I> =321). The demographic, clinical, and pathological variables were included in the univariate Cox proportional hazards analysis. Clinically established and statistically significant prognostic variables were utilized to develop a nomogram.</P> <P><B>Results</B></P> <P>The model was constructed using four variables: histologic type, pelvic lymph node involvement, depth of stromal invasion, and parametrial invasion. This model demonstrated good calibration and discrimination, with an internally validated concordance index of 0.71 and an externally validated c-index of 0.65. Compared to FIGO staging, which showed a broad range in terms of distant metastasis, the developed nomogram can accurately predict individualized risks based on individual risk factors.</P> <P><B>Conclusions</B></P> <P>The devised model offers a significantly accurate level of prediction and discrimination. In clinical practice it could be useful for counseling patients and selecting the patient group who could benefit from more intensive/further chemotherapy, once validated in a prospective patient cohort.</P>

The peripheral neutrophil recovery test was conducted to determine the efficacy of CJ-50001, a drug developed in Cheil Jedang R&D center as a recombinant granulocyte-colony stimulating factor (rG-CSF). Grasin was used as control drug. CJ-50001 and Grasin were subcutaneously administered to γ-ray irradiated mice for 21 days at a dose of 10 ㎍/kg after bone marrow transplantation and the recovery of neutrophil number was examined on the days of 9, 13, 17, and 21 after the drug administration. It was observed that the peripheral neutrophil number of the vehicle control group was recovered to the normal level on the day of 13 after the transplantation whereas the group administered with CJ-50001 and Grasin respectively, showed the normal level of peripheral neutrophil number on 9th day after the bone marrow transplantation. The number of peripheral neutrophils reached the highest level on the 21st day of drug administration, and was recovered to the normal level on the 4th day after ceasing of the drug administration (on the 25th day of the transplantation). Thus, it was presumed that CJ-50001 showed efficacy similar to Grasin on the peripheral neutrophil recovery after bone marrow transplantation.

Neutropenia is a major dose-limiting side effect of cancer chemotherapy. The therapeutic effects of CJ-50001 were examined on neutropenia caused by anticancer agents. Neutropenia was induced by cyclophosphomide (130 mg/kg), doxorubicin (4.5 mg/kg), and vincristine (1 mg/kg) in normal ICR mice and by cyclophosphamide (200 mg/kg) in CT26 adenocarcinoma bearing BALB/C mice. After the subcutaneous injection of anticancer agents, we administered subcutaneously recombinant human granulocyte-colonystimulating factor (100 ㎍/kg/day) to mice in order to stimulate neutrophil production. In normal and tumor-bearing mice, neutrophil production efficacy of CJ-50001 (rG-CSF) was similar to that of Grasin. These results suggest that CJ-50001 could be effective in its clinical use for neutropenia treatment.

A diversification of external morphology and genital characteristics among conspecific animal populations that are geographically divided is particularly important to study the context of evolution and it is regarded as the early stage of allopatric speciation. The aim of the present study is to understand the morphological variations of Callipogon relictus Semenov from the three different populations (South Korea, China, Russia) in the Eastern Palaearctic region. A morphometric analysis was performed based on 87 selected external and internal characteristics from 95 specimens. As results of the present study, South Korean specimens shows remarkable morphological differences in genital characteristics compare to Russian ones. In Principal Component Analysis (PCA), South Korean and Russian populations are divided into two groups and the Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) analysis indicate that these two populations have significant differences in 14 morphometric characteristics.

N/A CJC-50100 is a recombinant hepatitis B virus surface antigen (HBsAg) expressed in yeast. The general pharmacological properties of CJC-50100 were evaluated in mice, rats, dogs and isolated guinea pig ileum. The doses were 0.33∼33.3 ㎍/㎏ i.m. for mice and rats and 3.3∼9.9 ㎍/㎏ i.v. for dogs. The concentrations of 0.002∼0.02 ㎍/mlwere used for the assay with guinea pig ileum. Intramuscular administration of CJC-50100 at the doses did not alter general behavior and the responses for central nervous system, smooth muscle, gastrointestinal system, cardiovascular and respiratory system, and water and electrolytes excretion. In summary, CJC-50100 had no pharmacological effect in these studies even up to the 100-fold of the expected clinical dose, 20 ㎍/man/60 kg.
