This study was designed to compare segmental body composition and bone mineral density in spinal cord-injured(SCIS; n=9, SCIA; n=9) and non-injured control(AB; n=9) subjects. Dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry(DEXA) was used to measure %body fat, body fat mass, lean body mass, bone mineral contents, and bone mineral density in total and various body regions(arms, legs, trunk). The present results showed that body fat mass and %body fat were significantly higher and lean body mass was significantly lower in the SCIS group compared to AB group, while there was no difference between the SCIA and AB group in those of parameters. In BMC, there was no difference among groups and in BMD, SCI group was significantly lower that AB group, but there was no difference between SCIA group and AB group. Based on these results, in can be suggested that long-term regular exercise can reduce the negative changes in body composition, bone mineral density by spinal cord injury.

Hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) is a rare disorder characterized by the triad of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, thrombocytopenia, and acute renal failure. HUS arises from a wide spectrum of conditions, and chemotherapeutic agents have been reported to be associated with HUS, including Mitomycin, Cisplatin, Bleomycin, and Gemcitabine. A 76-year-old man treated with Gemcitabine due to non-small cell lung cancer developed clinical and laboratory findings compatible with HUS. Gemcitabine was ceased and hemodialysis and plasma exchange were utilized and he recovered. A high level of suspicion for HUS is necessary when cancer patients are treated with Gemcitabine, and prompt recognition and treatment are also essential.

This study is concerned with criterion for membrane to shell conversion in two-dimensional elastic-plastic finite element analysis using membrane/shell mixed element. It is well known that in the sheet metal forming some parts of the sheet deform under almost pure stretching (membrane) conditions, whereas other parts in contact with sharp tooling surfaces can develop significant bending strains. The membrane analysis has a short computational time; however, in the membrane analysis the bending effects can not be condidered at all. On the other hand, the shell analysis allows the consideration of bending effects, but involves too much computational time. So Onate1),2), Yang et al3),4) develped the membrane/shell mixed element. Onate introduced the energy ratio parameter and Yang et al introduced the ratio of thickness to radius of curvature as the criterion. In the present study we propose a new criterion by using the angle between both side elements in the nodal point.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Tungsten trioxide (WO<SUB>3</SUB>) is a typical electrochromic material that exhibits reversible optical property changes depending on the applied voltage. Previously, studies for its application in smart windows and various technologies have been made. However, improvements to the WO<SUB>3</SUB>-specific low color change rate are needed. The above problem can be solved by fabricating a color change layer with a large specific surface area through physical/chemical modification of the WO<SUB>3</SUB> layer and structural control for smooth electrolyte injection. In this study, three dimensional porous WO<SUB>3</SUB> nanostructures were prepared using polystyrene nanospheres. Inverse opal structured WO<SUB>3</SUB> thin films with high porosity showed excellent electrochromic properties. The change in transmittance was 86% at a wavelength of 700 nm; the response time was 5.55 s; and the coloration efficiency was calculated at 154.94 cm<SUP>2</SUP>/C. The response time was about 3 times faster and the coloration efficiency was about 2 times higher than that of the flat thin film. As a result, the WO<SUB>3</SUB> thin film with an inverted opal structure exhibited excellent electro reversibility and enhanced properties.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> WO<SUB>3,</SUB> one of electrochromic materials, was synthesized into a needle-shaped colloidal ink. </LI> <LI> The polystyrene beads were used as a template to fabricate an inverse opal structure. </LI> <LI> As the layer increases, the contact area with the electrolyte increases. </LI> <LI> Increasing the area of WO<SUB>3</SUB> in contact with the electrolyte improves ion transport. </LI> <LI> That is, the porous WO<SUB>3</SUB> film improves the overall electrochromic characteristics. </LI> </UL> </P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>The purposes of this study were to compare the perceived and actual 10-year risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD) and to evaluate the influence of cardiovascular risk factors on perceived CVD risk in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) in Korea. Additionally, the attainment of CVD prevention guideline goals by 3 levels of CVD risk (low, moderate, and high) was presented.</P><P>For this cross-sectional study, data were collected from 208 patients with RA. Actual CVD risk was estimated with the Systematic Coronary Risk Evaluation (SCORE), and goal attainment was assessed based on the European League Against Rheumatism guidelines. Actual CVD risk and perceived risk were compared with cross-tabulation. Chi-square tests were used to evaluate differences in cardiovascular risk factors by perceived risk. Levels of goal attainment were presented in percentages.</P><P>Among patients with RA, 13.9% were identified as being at high risk for CVD, whereas 39.9% were at moderate risk, and 46.2% were at low risk. The majority of those at high risk (96.6%) underestimated their risk for CVD. The use of antihypertensive or lipid-lowering medications and having a parental history of CVD significantly increased the likelihood that subjects with RA would perceive themselves as being at high risk for CVD. Diabetes, smoking, physical inactivity, and obesity did not affect perceived risk. A substantial proportion of the subjects with RA did not meet the prevention guideline goals.</P><P>Patients with RA who are at increased risk of developing CVD must be managed as soon as possible to attain the guideline goals and, accordingly, lower their risk of future CVD.</P>

The effect of dispensers containing a 93 : 6 : 1 blend of Z8-12:Ac, E8-12:Ac, and Z8-12:OH for mating disruption of Grapholita molesta (Busck) was tested from 1998 to 2000 in pear orchards in Naju, Korea. The permeation of the atmosphere with synthetic sex pheromone significantly reduced the ability of male moths to locate pheromone-baited traps, and reduction of male moths to locate pheromone-baited traps was not significantly different among different pheromone doses. Success in suppression of infestations by pheromone permeation was achieved under the dose rate of 50 g/ha, and increasing pheromone concentration above this dose did not significantly reduce the fruit damage. The efficacy of pheromone treatment could not be predicted using captures of males in traps baited with synthetic pheromone. Apparently, a much lower titer of pheromone was required to reduce trap catch than to reduce damage. The trap catch was influenced by trap position in pheromone plots; significantly more moths were caught at the outer areas than at the inner areas. Also, fruit damage levels in pheromone plots were significantly heavier in the trees located in the outer area. However, the lowered efficacy in the outer areas was partly improved by the application of a high number of dispensers at these areas compared with the inner areas. Assessment of trap catch and damage level over a three-year period showed that the effectiveness of the disruption technique for G. molesta was enhanced through sequential suppression year after year at the same site.

<P>We describe the first complete mitochondrial genome of <I>Gelidium vagum</I> (Gelidiales) (24,901 bp, 30.4% GC content), an agar-producing red alga. The circular mitochondrial genome contains 43 genes, including 23 protein-coding, 18 tRNA and 2 rRNA genes. All the protein-coding genes have a typical ATG start codon. No introns were found. Two genes, <I>secY</I> and <I>rps12,</I> were overlapped by 41 bp.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Nanoporous NiO thin films were fabricated on indium tin oxide glass by simple chemical bath deposition (CBD). Dense porous structure was formed by NiO flakes with thickness controlled by aluminum through CBD. Nanoporous NiO thin films with high porosity showed excellent electrochromic properties, with transmittance change of 77% at 550 nm and coloration efficiency of 99.5 cm<SUP>2</SUP>/C. Electrochemical properties of these thin films were studied in a 0.1 M KOH electrolyte by cyclic voltammetry and chronoamperometry measurements. These nanoporous NiO thin films showed high porosity structure with excellent electro-reversibility. They are also very stable with long cyclic durability.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> NiO, one of the electrochromic materials, was synthesized by chemical bath deposition. </LI> <LI> Aluminum was added at atomic percent to control the thickness of the thin film very thinly. </LI> <LI> The nanoporous NiO was fabricated with the thickness controlled film. </LI> <LI> The increased interconnect membrane increases the contact force with the substrate and the contact area with the electrolyte. </LI> <LI> The nanoporous NiO enhanced the overall electrochromic properties and the coloration efficiency was as high as 99.51 cm<SUP>2</SUP>/C. </LI> </UL> </P>
