Mitogenic Signal Transduction by Integrin- and Growth Factor Receptor-mediated Pathways

          Rudy,Juliano,이정원 한국분자세포생물학회 2004 Molecules and cells Vol.17 No.2

Engagement of cells with the extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins is crucial for various biological proc-esses, including cell adhesion, spreading, proliferation, differentiation, migration, apoptosis, and gene induc-tion, contributing to maintenance of tissue integrity, embryogenesis, wound healing, and the metastasis of tumor cells (Hynes, 2002b; Juliano, 2002). The en-gagement involves cell adhesion mediated by integrins, a large family of cell adhesion receptors that are transmembrane glycoproteins which bind to ECM or to counter-receptors on neighbor cells. In this review, the molecular basis of signaling mediated by integrins and their collaboration with growth factor receptors will be discussed, based on recent observations. Although other cell adhesion receptors including cadherins, se-lectins, syndecans, and the immunoglobulin superfamily of cell adhesion molecules (IgCAMs) can play important roles or be involved in these processes, we suggest read-ers refer to recent outstanding reviews on them (Barclay, 2003; Brummendorf and Lemmon 2001; Panicker et al. 2003).

Comparison of RULA and Checklist OCRA Ergonomic Risk Methods for Civil Construction

          Juliano,Prado,Stradioto,Ariel,Orlei,Michaloski,Antonio,Augusto,de,Paula,Xavie,Daniela,Colombini 대한산업공학회 2020 Industrial Engineeering & Management Systems Vol.19 No.4

The external plastering has a high rate of work accidents and corresponds to a large part of work-related musculoskeletal disorders (WMSD) in construction. The objective of this research was to statistically correlate the RULA and OCRA Checklist ergonomic risk methods, used in external workstations on building facades. The methodological approach consisted of a quantitative and qualitative research, including literature review and field research, including 32 employees, with the project approved by the Institution's Ethics and Research Committee. This research showed results that indicate the high physical requirements that the activity exerts on workers, a strong and significant statistical correlation between the methods, and that the OCRA checklist method is the best option among those for the ergonomic evaluation. The research showed limitations regarding the amount of ergonomic methods used as well as the difficult access to construction sites. The research leaves the possibility of future studies on the statistical comparison between other ergonomic methods, using a greater number of statistical tools, in addition to analyzing other activities that make up the execution of building work in civil construction.

Vol.17 No.2

This article presents an initial analysis of data collected on the perception of sounds of the Portuguese language by native Korean speakers, students in the initial learning phase at BUFS (Busan University of Foreign Studies - Busan University of Foreign Studies), South Korea. We discuss some of the several systems of Korean romanization and its idiosyncrasies. We continue commenting briefly on the phonological systems of both languages and comparing them face to face, demonstrating their points of divergence that may create problems when teaching Portuguese. We then discuss the experiment developed with words selected from divergent points in each language's phonological system and present the methodology by which the data were collected, as well as the forms of computational processing used. Finally, we focus on the analysis of the occlusive consonants in word initial position since they present great difficulty for Korean students. We present results that the perception of voiceless (/p, t, k/) and voiced (/b, d, ɡ/) consonant phonemes in Portuguese is not something simple that can be taught without effort. At the end of the article, we briefly propose a didactic approach on the problems raised about teaching Portuguese phonetics/phonology to Koreans. Wear Resistant Duplex Stainless Steels Produced by Spray Forming

          Juliano,Soyama,Thiago,Pama,Lopes,Guilherme,Zepon,Claudio,Shyinti,Kiminami,Walter,José,Botta,Claudemiro,Bolfarini 대한금속·재료학회 2019 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.25 No.2

In this work, boron-modified duplex stainless steels were prepared by spray forming using design guidelines provided bythermodynamic calculations. Firstly, an investigation of stable phases and phase formation sequence in duplex steels containinghigh levels of boron was conducted. The calculation indicated that there was an eutectic point at around 1 wt% boron withdifferent primary phase formations upon equilibrium solidification. For hypoeutectic compositions, the primary phase wasδ-Ferrite, whereas for hypereutectic a metallic boride (M2B) should form. Additionally, eutectic reactions for both compositionsshould lead to the formation of borides M2Band M3B2. Secondly, spray forming experiments were conducted basedon the thermodynamic calculations. Sample preparation was carried out using a conventional superduplex steel (2507) asstarting material. Two different compositions were selected: one hypoeutectic (0.8 wt% B) and one hypereutectic (2.5 wt%B). The microstructural investigation revealed the formation of different types of borides embedded in an austenitic-ferriticmatrix. Finally, the wear resistance was evaluated with the dry sand/rubber wheel test and a significant improvement wasobserved for boron-containing steels in comparison with the same steel without boron. This improvement was attributed tothe presence of fine and well-distributed boride particles that protected the austenitic-ferritic matrix from material removal.

A controllability-based formulation for the topology optimization of smart structures

Juliano,F.,Gonçalves,Jun,S.O.,Fonseca,Otávio,A.A.,Silveira 국제구조공학회 2016 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.17 No.5

This work presents a methodology to distribute piezoelectric material for structural vibration active control. The objective is to design controlled structures with actuators which maximizes the system controllability. A topology optimization was formulated in order to distribute two material phases in the domain: a passive linear elastic material and an active linear piezoelectric material. The objective is the maximization of the smallest eigenvalue of the system controllability Gramian. Analytical sensitivities for the finite element model are derived for the objective functions and constraints. Results and comparisons with previous works are presented for the vibration control of a two-dimensional short beam.

Maximal isometric handgrip strength: comparison between weight categories and classificatory table for adult judo athletes

          Emerson,Franchini,Juliano,Schwartz,Monica,Yuri,Takito 한국운동재활학회 2018 JER Vol.14 No.6

The aims of this study were to compare the maximal isometric handgrip strength of judo athletes from different weight categories and to create a classificatory table for this test. A total of 406 athletes had their maxi-mal isometric handgrip strength measured, following standardized rec-ommendations. Absolute and relative values were calculated for each hand and for the sum of both hands. Weight categories were compared through a one-way analysis of variance, followed by Tukey test. The ef-fect size was determined by partial eta squared, and the relationship between variables was determined using Pearson correlation coeffi-cient. There was a large effect of weight category in absolute handgrip strength for each hand and for the sum of both hands, with lower values for the lighter categories. Conversely, when the relative strength was considered higher values were found for the lighter categories (P<0.001). Very large and significant positive correlations (P<0.001) were found between right and left for absolute (r=0.886) and relative (r=0.883) handgrip values. Overall, there was an increase in absolute and a decrease in relative handgrip strength across weight categories. These differences found in grip strength in weight categories are prob-ably linked to differences in muscle mass between them. There was a high correlation between each hand for absolute and relative values, which suggests that assessing only one hand may be enough, and therefore a faster way of evaluation. Finally, the normative classificatory table created may serve as a reference for different purposes.

Effect of official judo matches on handgrip strength and perceptual responses

          Rafael,Lima,Kons,Juliano,Dal,Pupo,Jonathan,Ache-Dias,Thyago,Garcia,Romário,Rodrigues,da,Silva,Luiz,Felipe,Guarise,Katicips,Daniele,Detanico 한국운동재활학회 2018 JER Vol.14 No.1

This study aimed to verify the effect of judo matches on handgrip strength and perceptual responses during an official tournament in medalists and nonmedalists. Thirty-four male judo athletes participated in an offi-cial judo tournament. Before the first match and immediately after each match, maximum isometric handgrip strength and rate of perceived ex-ertion overall and in specific areas were assessed. Analysis of variance for repeated measures was used to compare variables before the first match and after each match, and t-test was used to compare medalists and nonmedalists with the level of significance set at 5%. Also, effect size (ES) analysis was used. The results showed decrease in handgrip strength in both hands from the third match (P<0.05). The rate of per-ceived exertion (RPE) increased from the first match and remained high over the subsequent matches (P<0.001). A very large effect for nonmed-alist group (ES=3.44) and large effect for medalist group (ES=1.94) was found in the third match compared to prematch. Forearm and fingers were the body regions most cited by athletes in both groups. We con-cluded that an official judo competition induced significant drop in hand-grip strength from the third match and increased the RPE from first match. Medalists seem to have better recovery after the third match compared to nonmedalists.

Producing Alkaline Lipase by Fusarium oxysporum Using Unconventional Medium Components

          Cedenir,Pereira,de,Quadros,Juliano,Lemos,Bicas,Iramaia,Angelica,Neri-Numa,Glaucia,Maria,Pastore 한국식품과학회 2009 Food Science and Biotechnology Vol.18 No.6

This study reports the use of different inducing agents (olive, soybean, and used frying oils) and culture mediums [synthetic medium (SM), whey protein, and corn steep liqueur (SL)] to optimize the production of lipase by Fusarium oxysporum. A relationship among the inoculum size, presence of a fat source, fungal growth, and lipase production was evident during the fermentation. The best results were achieved when the inoculum was grown in SM or SL and the fermentation was developed in SM with frying oil as the inducing agent. The maximum activity (about 15 U/㎖) was obtained after a 72 hr cultivation.
