Background : The cun measurement System, an essential and convenient method in locating acupoints, has been widely used in the practice of acupuncture. However, traditional cun measurement has been criticized for its lack of reliability. Objectives : The purposes of this study are to determine if one cun measured by the directional methods have a consistency with that of proportional methods and to investigate which factors are related with these differences, especially in forearm. Methods : The distance between the elbow crease and the wrist crease of forearm was compared to a reference value of one cun obtained by the directional method. In this method, one cun is one third of the distance between index finger and Small finger of a subject, measured at proximal interphalangeal joint. In addition, to investigate the factors influencing the differences between these two methods, we measured the height and body weight and calculated body mass index (BMI). Finally we analyzed the factors correlated with these lengths by linear regression test. Results : The results showed that one cun obtained by the directional methods were significantly different from one cun by the proportional methods in forearm. It was demonstrated that the length acquired with the directional method was more correlated with body weight and body mass index, while the length obtained by the proportional method was more correlated with the height.

Here we introduce an ensemble strategy for a real-time label-free fluorescent graphene (Gr) aptasensor platform. This platform employs aptamer length-dependent tunability, thus enabling the reagentless quantitative detection of biomolecules through computational processing coupled with real-time fluorescence imaging data. We demonstrate that this strategy effectively delivers dose-dependent quantitative readouts of adenosine triphosphate (ATP) concentration on chemical vapor deposited (CVD) Gr and reduced graphene oxide (rGO) surfaces, thereby providing cytotoxicity assessment. Compared with conventional fluorescence spectrometry methods, our highly efficient, universally applicable, and rational approach will facilitate broader implementation of imaging-based biosensing platforms for the quantitative evaluation of a range of target molecules.
</▼2>

To evaluate the psychopathology and personalitic characteristics of shamanistic practitioners of Chinju area in Korea, the authors interviewed 22 persons using Symptom Check List-90-R(SCL-90-R) and Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ), and the comparison was made with the data obtained from 20 control persons. The results were as follows : 1) In SCL-90-R, positive symptom distress index of the shamanistic practitioners was significantly higher than that of the controls(p<0.001), but positive symptom total of the shamanistic practitioners was significantly lower than that of the controls(p<0.05). 2) In EPQ, toughmindedness and lie subscores of the shamanistic practitioners were significantly higher than those of the controls(p<0.05, p<0.001). 3) The number of significant correlations between symptom subscores in SCL-90-R and character subscores in EPQ was larger in the shamanistic practitioners than the controls. The neuroticism subscore in SCL-90-R showed significant correlations with 9 symptom subscores in EPQ in the shamanistic practitioners. The extraversion-introversion subscore in EPQ showed negative correlations with the hostility subscore in SCL-90-R in the controls and with the interpersonal senitivity and phobic anxiety subscores in SCL-90-R in the shamanistic practitioners. The authors conclude that the number of psychopathologic symptoms of the shamanistic practitioners was smaller than that of the controls but the severity of the psychopathologic symptoms of the shamanistic practitioners was higher than that of the controls. We conclude that the shamanistic practitioners showed higher subscore in toughmindedness than the controls and they expressed their affects less openly than the controls. The number of significant correlations between symptom subscores in SCL-90-R and character subscores in EPQ was larger in the shamanistic practitioners than in the controls.

The realization of a high-throughput biosensor platform with ultrarapid detection of biomolecular interactions and an ultralow limit of detection in the femtomolar (fM) range or below has been retarded due to sluggish binding kinetics caused by the scarcity of probe molecules on the nanostructures and/or limited mass transport. Here, as a new method for the highly efficient capture of biomolecules at extremely low concentration, we tested a three-dimensional (3D) platform of a bioelectronic field-effect transistor (bio-FET) with vertically aligned and highly dense one-dimensional (1D) ZnO nanorods (NRs) as a sensing surface capped by an ultrathin TiO2 layer for improved electrolytic stability on a chemical-vapor-deposited graphene (Gr) channel. The ultrarapid detection capability with a very fast response time (1 min) at the fM level of proteins in the proposed 3D bio-FET is primarily attributed to the fast binding kinetics of the probe-target proteins due to the small diffusion length of the target molecules to reach the sensor surface and the substantial number of probe molecules available on the largely increased surface area of the vertical ZnO NRs. This new 3D electrical biosensor platform can be easily extended to other electrochemical nanobiosensors and has great potential for practical applications in miniaturized biosensor integrated systems.

BACKGROUND: A number of distinct stress signaling pathways in myocardium cause cardiac hypertrophy and heart failure. Class II histone deacetylases (HDACs) antagonize several stress-induced pathways and hypertrophy. However, cardiac hypertrophy induced by transgenic overexpression of the homeodomain only protein, HOP, can be prevented by the nonspecific HDAC inhibitors trichostatin A and valproic acid, suggesting that alternate targets that oppose class II HDAC function might exist in myocardium. We tested the effects of several HDAC inhibitors, including a class I HDAC-selective inhibitor, SK-7041, on cardiac hypertrophy induced by angiotensin II (Ang II) treatment or aortic banding (AB). METHODS AND RESULTS: Cardiac hypertrophy was induced by chronic infusion of Ang II or by AB in mice or rats and evaluated by determining the ratio of heart weight to body weight or to tibia length, cross-sectional area, or echocardiogram. Cardiac hypertrophy induced by Ang II or AB for 2 weeks was significantly reduced by simultaneous administration of trichostatin A, valproic acid, or SK-7041. Echocardiogram revealed that exaggerated left ventricular systolic dimensions were relieved by HDAC inhibitors. HDAC inhibitors partially reversed preestablished cardiac hypertrophy and improved survival of AB mice. The expressions of atrial natriuretic factor, alpha-tubulin, beta-myosin heavy chain, and interstitial fibrosis were reduced by HDAC inhibition. CONCLUSIONS: These results suggest that the predominant effect of HDAC inhibition, mainly mediated by class I HDACs, is to prevent cardiac hypertrophy in response to a broad range of agonist and stretch stimuli.
