      • Journalistic Heritage of Karel Čapek

        본 논문은 카렐 차페크의 작품에서 지속적인 화제가 되고 있는 중요한 부분인, 저널리즘 유산에 대한 연구이다. 이미 중학생 시기에 신문 기고가로 활동했던 초창기의 삶과 작가로서의 세계관을 형성하는 데 결정적인 영향을 미친 대학 시절뿐만 아니라 저널리스트로서의 차페크의 생애를 시대별로 접근하고 있다.카렐 차페크는 실용주의 철학과의 밀접한 관계가 있음을 증명하는 몇 가지 연구를 단행했는데 그는 여기에서 실용주의야말로 강압적인 혁명적 방법을 동원할 당위성을 배제한 지식과 실제 행동의 두 가지 차원 모두에서, 사람들에게세계를 형성하고 변화시킬 가능성을 제공한다고 보았다. 이 논문에서 본문의 중심 부분은 차페크가『Národní listy[나로드니 리스트], 민족지(民族誌)』와『Lidové noviny[리도베 노비니], 국민신문』라는 유명한 체코의 양대 신문사에서 편집부원으로 일할 당시의 저널리스트의 경력을 소개 하고 있다. 현실 세계의 다양한 국면에 관심을 기울인 그의 기고문들은 체코슬로바키아 제 1 공화국의 평화롭고 또 극적인 시간들을 사실적이고 자세하게 묘사한 시대의 반사경과도 같은 것들이었다. 체코슬로바키아 제 1 공화국의 대통령 토마쉬 가리그 마사리크의 절친한 친구이자 국민으로부터 존경받는 한 인물(마사리크)과 또 자신의 저서들에 대한 해설자 역할을 했던 카렐 차페크는, 체코슬로바키아 민주주의 정권의 대표적 상징 그 자체가 되었다. 결과적으로 그는 이와 같은 자신의 입장과 철학에 반대하는 극우파와 극좌파 성향의 저널리즘 양측의 표적이 되었다. 나치 독일로부터 위협받는 매우 위태로운 시기에 있어 민족과 정치, 문화의 역할과 지식인들의 사명에 대해 이야기하고 있는 차페크의 훌륭한 저널리즘 유산은 우리에게 여전히 감동의 한 부분으로 메아리친다. This essay is dedicated to an important and constantly topical part of the Karel Čapek´s work, to his journalistic heritage. The text follows the periods of Čapek´s career as a journalist in a chronological order, but it also mentions his very beginnings as a newspaper contributor at the age of a junior high school student. His university years are taken into account as well, because that time had the decisive influence on the forming of the author´s view of the world. Karel Čapek wrote then some studies demonstrating his close relation to the philosophy of pragmatism, in which he saw an approach giving the people the possibility to shape and change the world on both knowledge and practical action level without the necessity of using violent revolutionary methods. The main part of the text makes the readers acquainted with the Čapek´s engagement in editorial staffs of two renowned Czech newspapers Národní listy and Lidové noviny. His contributions dedicated to a immense number of aspects of the surrounding reality are a true and detailed time mirror of the quieter and more dramatic periods of the Czechoslovak First republic. Karel Čapek, the close friend and the respectful expounder of the personality and the work of T.G. Masaryk, the first president of the Czechoslovakia, became himself the almost symbolistic representative of the democratic regime. He had to face the oppositional views from the side of both the extreme right and left wing orientated journalism. His brilliantly formulated contemplations on the role of nation, policy, culture and the tasks of the intellectuals in the time of endanger and peril from the side of Nazi Germany remain the most impressive part of Čapek´s journalistic heritage.

        Resistive switching characteristics of ZnO-graphene quantum dots and their use as an active component of an organic memory cell with one diode-one resistor architecture

        We investigated the resistive switching characteristics of a polystyrene:ZnO-graphene quantum dots system and its potential application in a one diode-one resistor architecture of an organic memory cell. The log-log I-V plot and the temperature-variable I-V measurements revealed that the switching mechanism in a low-current state is closely related to thermally activated transport. The turn-on process was induced by a space-charge-limited current mechanism resulted from the ZnO-graphene quantum dots acting as charge trap sites, and charge transfer through filamentary path. The memory device with a diode presented a ~10<SUP>3</SUP>I<SUB>ON</SUB>/I<SUB>OFF</SUB> ratio, stable endurance cycles (10<SUP>2</SUP>cycles) and retention times (10<SUP>4</SUP>s), and uniform cell-to-cell switching. The one diode-one resistor architecture can effectively reduce cross-talk issue and realize a cross bar array as large as ~3kbit in the readout margin estimation. Furthermore, a specific word was encoded using the standard ASCII character code.

        Powerset Theory of Fuzzy Soft Sets

        Fuzzy powerset theory is defined by a monad, and therefore it can be applied in computer science. Fuzzy soft sets generalize fuzzy sets and have considerable application potential in, for instance, decision-making and optimization. In this study, we prove that fuzzy soft sets also give rise to a powerset theory, which is also defined by a monad. As in the case of fuzzy sets, in fuzzy soft set theory, it is possible to use several theoretical constructions requiring the existence of a powerset theory and monads. We describe the construction of fuzzy soft relations as an example of the use of monads in fuzzy soft sets.

        NQO1 (NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1)에 의한 대식세포 활성화 억제

        본 연구는 대식세포 활성화 과정에서 NQO1의 역할을 확인하는 것이다. 대식세포의 활성화 정도는 배양액으로 분비하는 IL-6와 TNF-α 양을 측정하여 평가하였다. 먼저 NQO1 WT 생쥐와 NQO1 KO 생쥐에서 각각 분리한 복강대식세포의 활성화 정도를 비교해 보았다. 특이하게도 NQO1 KO 복강대식세포가 NQO1 WT에 비해서 더 높게 활성화되어 있었다. 또한 일반 생쥐의 복강대식세포에 NQO1 억제제(dicumarol)을 처치한 경우에도 강한 활성이 유도됨을 확인하였다. Dicumarol을 처치한 RAW264.7 (대식세포주)에 서도 강한 활성화가 관찰되었다. 이는 NQO1이 대식세포의 활성화 과정을 억제하는 경로와 연관되어 있음을 보여준다. 더욱이 dicumarol을 처치하여 NQO1의 기능을 억제시킨 다양한 대식세포에서 IκB 단백질이 유의하게 감소한다는 사실을 확인하였다. 대식세포 활성화 과정을 매개하는 주요 신호분자가 NFκB이며 이 분자에 대한 억제자가 IκB라는 사실들을 감안할 때, NQO1의 기능이 IκB 단백질변성 억제와 연관되어 있으며 이를 통해 대식세포의 활성화를 차단했을 가능성이 있다. 본 연구는 향 후 대식세포 활성화 과정을 조절하는 NQO1의 역할을 규명하는데 있어서 중요한 기초 결과가 될 것이다. We previously reported that NAD(P)H:quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1)-knockout (KO) mice exhibited spontaneous inflammation in the gut. We also found that NQO1-KO mice showed highly increased inflammatory responses compared with NQO1-WT control mice when subjected to DSS-induced experimental colitis. In a Clostridium difficile toxin-induced mouse enteritis model, NQO1-KO mice were also sensitive compared with NQO1-WT mice. Moreover, numerous studies have shown that NQO1 is functionally associated with immune regulation. Here, we assessed whether NQO1 defects can alter macrophage activation. We found that peritoneal macrophages isolated from NQO1-KO mice produced more IL-6 and TNF-a than those isolated from NQO1-WT mice. Moreover, the dicumarol-induced inhibition of NQO1 significantly increased IL-6 and TNF-a production in peritoneal macrophages isolated from NQO1-WT mice, as well as in the cultured mouse macrophage cell line, RAW264.7. These results indicate that NQO1 may negatively regulate the activation of macrophages. Knockout or chemical inhibition of NQO1 markedly reduced the expression of IκB (inhibitor of NFκB) in both mouse peritoneal macrophages and RAW264.7 cells. Finally, RAW264.7 cells treated with dicumarol exhibited morphological changes reflecting macrophage activation. Our results suggest that NQO1 may suppress the NFkB pathways in macrophages, thereby suppressing the activation of these cells. Thus, immunosuppressive activity may be among the many possible functions of NQO1.

        Pyridinolysis of 2,4-Dinitrophenyl Phenyl Thionocarbonate: Effect of Changing Electrophilic Center from C=O to C=S on Reactivity and Mechanism

        Second-order rate constants (kN) have been measured spectrophotometrically for nucleophilic substitution reactions of 2,4-dinitrophenyl phenyl thionocarbonate 4 with a series of Z-substituted pyridines in 80 mol %H_2O/20 mol % DMSO at 25.0 ± 0.1 ^oC. The Brønsted-type plot for the reactions of 4 exhibits downward curvature (i.e., β_1 = 0.21 and β_2 = 1.04), indicating that the reactions proceed through a stepwise mechanism with a change in rate-determining step. It has been found that 4 is less reactive than its oxygen analogue, 2,4-dinitrophenyl phenyl carbonate 3, although the thionocarbonate is expected to be more electrophilic than its oxygen analogue. The pK_a at the center of the Brønsted curvature, defined as pK_a^o, has been analyzed to be 6.6for the reactions of 4 and 8.5 for those of 3. Dissection of k_N into the microscopic rate constants k_1 and k_2/k_(-1)ratio has revealed that the reactions of 4 result in smaller k_1 values but larger k_2/k_(-1) ratios than the corresponding reactions of 3. The larger k_2/k_(-1) ratios have been concluded to be responsible for the smaller pK_a^o found for the reactions of 4.

        Pharmacokinetics of a novel antiangiogenic agent KR-31831 in rats

        <P>This study reports the absorption, dose-linearity and pharmacokinetics of a novel antiangiogenic agent KR-31831 in rats after i.v. and oral administration at doses of 5, 10 and 25 mg/kg on both occasions. Concentrations of KR-31831 were determined by a validated LC/MS/MS assay method. After i.v. injection, plasma concentration-time profiles showed multi-compartmental characteristics, and there were no significant differences in Cl (20.8–27.7 ml/min/kg) and dose-normalized AUC (178.1–231 µg·min/ml based on the 5 mg/kg dose) as a function of dose. However, V<SUB>ss</SUB> was significantly increased at the 25 mg/kg dose (4931 ml/kg) compared with those (2288–2421 ml/kg) at lower doses. Subsequently, t<SUB>1/2</SUB> was increased from 143–159 min at the lower doses to 304 min at the 25 mg/kg dose. The altered V<SUB>SS</SUB> was found to be a result of reduced plasma protein binding at relatively high concentrations. Following oral administration (doses 5–25 mg/kg), the absolute oral bioavailability ranged from 37.8% to 46.3%, and there were no significant alterations in dose-normalized AUC, T<SUB>max</SUB>, C<SUB>max</SUB> and t<SUB>1/2</SUB> as a function of dose. The extent of urinary excretion was low for both i.v. (0.35%–0.54%) and oral (0.13%–0.33%) doses. Further discussions on the chemical and microsomal stability were included. In conclusion, dose-independent absorption kinetics were observed at oral doses from 5 to 25 mg/kg in rats. Orally administered KR-31831 could be eliminated mainly by the liver metabolic pathway.
