Background Coptisine is a natural alkaloid compound and is known to have multiple benefcial efects including antioxidant activity. However, whether it can protect lung fbroblasts from oxidative damage has not been studied yet. Objectives To investigate the potential inhibitory efect of coptisine against oxidative stress in V79-4 lung fbroblast cells. Methods V79-4 cells were treated with H2O2 (1 mM) in the presence or absence of coptisine (50 µg/ml), N-acetyl cysteine (NAC, 10 mM) or zinc protoporphyrin IX (ZnPP, 10 µM) for the indicated times. The alleviating efects of coptisine on cytotoxicity, cell cycle arrest, apoptosis, reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, DNA damage, mitochondrial dynamics, and inhibition of ATP production against H2O2 were investigated. Western blot analysis was used to analyze the expression levels of specifc proteins. Results Coptisine inhibited H2O2-induced cytotoxicity and DNA damage by blocking abnormal ROS generation. H2O2 treatment caused cell cycle arrest at the G2/M phase accompanied by increased expression of cyclin-dependent kinase (Cdk) inhibitor p21WAF1/CIP1 and decreased expression of cyclin B1 and cyclin A. However, these efects were attenuated in the presence of coptisine or NAC. Coptisine also prevented apoptosis by decreasing the rate of Bax/Bcl-2 expression in H2O2-stimulated cells and suppressing the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and the cytosolic release of cytochrome c. In addition, the activation of nuclear factor-erythroid-2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) and heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) was markedly promoted by coptisine in the presence of H2O2. However, zinc protoporphyrin IX, a potent inhibitor of HO-1, attenuated the ROS scavenging and anti-apoptotic efects of coptisine. Conclusions Based on current data, we suggest that coptisine can be used as a potential treatment for oxidative stress-related lung disease.

Applying work restrictions for asymptomatic healthcare personnel (HCP) with potential exposure to coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is recommended to prevent transmission from potentially contagious HCP to patients and other HCP. However, it can lead to understaffing, which threatens the safety of both patients and HCP. We evaluated 203 COVID-19 exposure events at a single tertiary hospital from January 2020 to June 2021. A total of 2,365 HCP were potentially exposed, and work restrictions were imposed on 320 HCP, leading to the loss of 3,311 working days. However, only one of the work-restricted HCP was confirmed with COVID-19. During the study period, the work restriction measures might be taken excessively compared to their benefit, so establishing more effective standards for work restriction is required.
Redoable Tie-Over Dressing Using Multiple Loop Silk Threads

After skin grafting, to prevent hematoma or seroma collection at the graft site, a tie-over dressing has been commonly used. However, although the conventional tie-over dressing by suture is a useful method for securing a graft site, refixation is difficult when repeated tie-over dressing is needed. Therefore, we recommend a redoable tie-over dressing technique with multiple loops threads and connecting silk threads. After the raw surface of each of our cases was covered with a skin graft, multiple loop silk thread attached with nylon at the skin graft margin. We applied the ointment gauze and wet cotton/fluffy gauze over the skin graft, then fixed the dressing by connecting cross-counter multiple loop thread with connecting silk threads. When we opened the tie-over dressing by cutting the connecting silk threads, we repeated the tie-over dressing with the same method. The skin graft was taken successfully without hematoma or seroma collection or any other complications. In conclusion, we report a novel tie-over dressing enabling simple fixation of the dressing to maintain proper tension for wounds that require repetitive fixation. Further, with this reliable method, the skin grafts were well taken.

Background/Aims: Telomerase activity and telomerase reverse transcriptase (TERT) expression have been proposed as a marker for malignancy. However, little is known about those markers in intestinal metaplasia (IM). This study was performed to evaluate the usefulness of telomerase activity in gastric washing fluid and TERT expression in tissue as a marker for early diagnosis of stomach cancer. Methods: Gastric washing fluid and biopsies were taken endoscopically. We examined the telomerase activity by telomeric repeat amplification protocol (TRAP) and the TERT expression by semiquantitative reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction in 26, 21 and 15 cases of cancer, IM, and normal mucosa respectively. Results: The telomerase activity was positive in 65% of cancer, 44% of incomplete IM, and 33% of complete IM. The TERT was expressed in 89% of cancer, 81% of IM, but not in normal mucosa. The TERT expression level was higher in cancer and incomplete IM than in complete IM and normal mucosa (p<0.05). Conclusions: Telomerase activity in gastric washing fluid and TERT expression in tissue may have limited usefulness as a marker for the early diagnosis of stomach cancer. However, the increased levels of TERT expression in IM and cancer suggest that TERT expression may be associated with carcinogenesis in stomach cancer. (Korean J Gastroenterol 2003;42:183-189)

Most clinicians have taken a lot of interest in tumors arising from the bony thorax because not only of their rarity and predictable diagnosis which could be reflected as a unique radiologic shadow but also variable surgical modes for maintenance of chest wall stability encountered after en-bloc resection. By the retrospective review, we have analyzed 24 cases of primary bony thorax tumors which were experienced and surgically treated at the St. Mary`s hospital of Catholic Medical College from Jan. 1969 to Sept. 1984. The results are as follows: 1. Age incidence was evenly distributed through all decades and the male-female ratio is 15:9. 2. 16 cases out of 24 were benign tumors and the commonest one of which was fibrous dysplasia. 3. Remaining 8 cases were malignant tumors and among which osteogenic sarcoma was the commonest one. 4. The majority of tumors [22/24] were developed from the rib and the remains were from the sternum. 5. Common manifestation were palpable mass or swelling and localized tenderness. 6. Various kinds of operative procedure were underwent: single resection of rib including tumor,14 cases; multiple resection of ribs with chemotherapy or myoplasty, 2 cases; en-bloc resection of the chest wall and reconstructive procedure, 5 cases; partial resection of sternum, 1 case; bone biopsy and chemotherapy, 2 cases.
Characterization of Metal Contacts to Two-Dimensional MoTe2

Transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) atomic layers are an atomically thin material in the form of MX2, where M is a transition metal atom (such as Mo or W) and X is a chalcogen atom (such as S, Se, or Te). Among them, MoTe2 is attractive because of its narrow band gap (i.e., 1 eV), leading to optical and electrical applications such as field-effect transistors, photodetectors, light- emitting diodes, and photovoltaics. The TMD atomic layers, however, suffer from the extremely high contact resistance of the metal electrodes. The formation of a low-resistance ohmic contact is essential to achieving good device performance. Here, we examined the contact resistance of the two-dimensional MoTe2 atomic tri-layers from transmission line model (TLM) measurements. 2H-phase MoTe2 atomic tri-layers were synthesized on a silicon dioxide/silicon substrate by using metal-organic chemical vapor deposition. The TLM pattern was fabricated on the tri-layers to examine the specific contact resistance of metals. This method is highly effective for minimizing the contact resistance of TMD atomic layers.
