West Nile virus (WNV) is a mosquito-borne zoonotic pathogen that has spread throughout Europe and the United States. Recently, WNV spreadto East and Southeast Asia, and great efforts have been made in South Korea to prevent the spread of WNV from neighboring countries. Inthis study, we diagnosed the first case of WNV in pigeons (Columba livia domestica) residing in cities using a competitive enzyme-linkedimmunosorbent assay and confirmed it with nested reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction analysis and sequencing. This is the firstreport to provide convincing evidence that WNV is present within South Korea.

윤유식(Yoo Shik Yoon),오정학(Jeong Hak Oh),박경연(Kyung Yeon Park) 한국호텔외식관광경영학회 2009 호텔경영학연구 Vol.18 No.3
This study was to compare competitiveness among tourism hotels in Seoul city according to customers` cognition of importance of hotel selection attributes. From the literature review, positioning theory was identified and hotel selection attributes were extracted and utilized to measure their degree of importance as crucial attributes. A total of 170 useful sample were collected from tourism hotels such as Silla, Lotte, Intercontinental, W, Hilton, Grand Hyatt and Ritz Carlton. Reliability analysis, EFA, cluster analysis, MDS analysis were performed for positioning analysis in this study. The findings showed that there were differences of importance of hotel selection attributes and of hotel preference. Theoretical and managerial implications were discussed in the conclusion.
Synthesis and Thermal Properties of Poly(phenylene sulfide-co-phenylene sulfide ketone)
Park, Lee Soon,Oh, Hyun Shik,Lee, Tae Hyung,Kim, Soon Hak,Hwang, Jin Sang 한국공업화학회 2000 Journal of Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Vol.6 No.5
Poly(phenylene sulfide-co-phenylene sulfide ketone)s (PPS/SK) were synthesized from p-dichlorobenzene (DCB)/4,4`-dichlorobenzophenone (DCBP) and p-dibromobenzene (DBB) /DCBP monomer pairs using sodium sulfide trihydrate (Na₂S 3H₂O) in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidinone (NMP) solvent. The yield and molecular weight of the PPS/SK copolymers were higher with the DBB/DCBP/Na₂S monomers. The copolymer composition and molecular weight of the PPS/SK copolymers were determined by an elemental (C, H, S) analysis and high temperature (210℃) GPC with 1-chloronaphthalene as an eluent, respectively. The molecular weight of the PPS/SK copolymers showed a maximum value at a feed ratio of [DBB]/[DCBPJ = 70/30 ㏖%. The plot of the T_g's of the PPS/SK copolymers relative to the copolymer content of the DCBP repeat unit matched well with Fox equation. As the content of the DCBP unit increased in the PPS/SK copolymers, the T_g of the PPS/SK copolymer also increased. The PPS/SK copolymers exhibited T_m's with all compositions at a 20℃/min scan rate for the DSC measurement. The eutectic point appeared to be 267.2℃ with 29.8 ㏖% DCBP units in the copolymers.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are used in various composite materials to enhance electrical, thermal and mechanical properties of composite materials. In this study, we investigate the wear characteristics of polycarbonate/acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (PC/ABS) blends containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs). PC/ABS blends are commonly used in many industrial applications such as cellular phones and display cases and MWCNTs have been added to the PC/ABS blends to improve their electromagnetic interference shielding (EMS). We performed wear tests on PC/ABS blends containing MWCNTs under reciprocating linear sliding conditions with chrome steel balls as a counterpart material. The normal loads were 10, 30, 50, 70, 100 N, the sliding speed was 10 mm/s, the stroke length was 15 mm, and the tests lasted 900 s. The MWCNTs included in the PC/ABS blends lower the wear volume and friction coefficient of the composites. We analyzed the wear debris collected from the composites during the tests in terms of the MWCNT concentration using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. The results show that the quantity of MWCNTs in the debris is proportional to the concentration of MWCNTs in the composite, indicating that the exposure of the MWCNTs to environments by wear could be increased with their concentration in the composite.
Vol.19 No.3·4
Campylobacter jejuni isolated from river and lake waters and chicken samples were examined for their contamination and survival in surface waters and for inactivation by chlorination. The isolation rates of C. jejuni from chicken samples were 50 to 100%, while only one out of 48 studies was positive from the surface water. When the organisms suspended in sterile river water were incubated at 4℃, they survived upto 20 days, but they died off after 1 day incubation at 30℃ or above. The in situ survival studies of C. jejuni in the waters of Dsecheong Dam and Han-river (1st bridge) revealed that they survived upto 14 days in winter, but for shorter period of time in spring and summer. The survival rates of the organism in the deeper water were a little longer than in the surface water, but the rates were not different between the both water environments. When the organisms were treated with 0. 5, 1. 0 and 2. 0 ㎎/ℓ chlorine solution at pH 7. 0 and 15℃ for 60 minutes, they were inactivated by about 1, 4, and 6 logs, respectively, The inactivation rate was increasingly affected by lowering the reaction pH and by increasing the reaction temperature.
