Background/Aims: As the incidence rate of and mortality from pseudomembranous colitis (PMC) are increasing worldwide, it is important to study the simple predictive risk factors for PMC among patients with hospital-acquired diarrhea (HAD). This study focused on identifying the clinical risk factors that can easily predict PMC. Methods: The presumed HAD patients were prospectively recruited at the Hallym University Kangdong Sacred Heart Hospital. Results: Age of 70 and older (adjusted odds ratio [OR], 1.76, 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.12 to 0.75), use of proton pump inhibitors (adjusted OR, 4.07, 95% CI, 2.512 to 6.57), use of cephalosporins (adjusted OR, 2.99, 95% CI, 1.82 to 4.94), and underlying cancer (adjusted OR, 1.72, 95% CI, 1.04 to 2.82) were independent risk factors for PMC in the multivariate logistic regression analysis. The prevalence of PMC was very low in the patients with HAD who exhibited no risk factors. Conclusions: The risk factors for PMC in patients with HAD included cephalosporin use, proton pump inhibitor use, old age, and cancer. Considering the strongly negative predictive values of these risk factors, endoscopic evaluation can be delayed in patients with HAD without risk of developing PMC. (Gut Liver 2014,8:41-48)

Nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) with high blue fluorescence efficiency were synthesized by the hydrothermal method from p-Phenylenediamine and p-Coumaric acid. The N-GQDs possess several superiorities, most significantly in excellent solubility and superior photostability. Besides, the as-prepared N-GQDs exhibit a uniform size distribution with a diameter of about 3.8 ± 0.5 nm. After dispersing the N-GQDs in water, the formed aqueous solution still presents a stable and homogeneous phase even after 2 months at room temperature. The N-GQD dispersion was further utilized as sensing probes for the selective detection of copper ions (Cu2+), which is realized by the photoluminescence (PL) quenching of N-GQDs after adding Cu2+. The detection limit for Cu2+ was found to be 57 nM L−1, with superior selectivity in the presence of other commonly interfering metal ions. The presented results in this study provide a facile and high-efficiency method for synthesizing N-GQDs, with ultra-high detectivity and selectivity for Cu2+ detection, offering numerous opportunities for the development of biosensing, bioimaging, environment monitoring, and others.

온라인 전기자동차는 도로에 매설된 급전선로로부터 유도자계를 통하여 비접촉 방식으로 전기를 집전 받아 정차 및 주행 중에 충전하는 자동차이다. 이러한 비접촉 충전을 위해서는 도로에 매설된 급전 시스템과 차량 하부에 장착된 집전 시스템이 필요하며, 급전 시스템은 다시 급전 인버터와 급전선로로, 집전 시스템은 집전 모듈(pick-up)과 집전 레귤레이터로 구성된다. 본 논문에서는 급집전 시스템 각각의 장치를 소개하며, 더불어 구축된 시스템의 성능에 대해서도 소개한다.

Gear system has been widely used in industrial applications and unexpected failures of gears are not only extremely damaging but also leading to economic losses. So, early detection of fault is important for diagnosis machine condition. And acoustic emission is an efficient non-destructive testing technique fur the diagnosis of machine health and is useful technique far early detection of fault because it can find low-amplitude and high-frequency signal on account of high sensibility. Therefore, in this paper, the AE signal was measured and preprocessed using envelope analysis for gearbox with misalignment between pinion and gear. And then the gear misalignment's vibration characteristic were analyzed.

온라인 전기자동차는 도로에 매설된 급전선로로부터 유도자계를 통하여 비접촉 방식으로 전기를 집전 받아 정차 및 주행 중에 충전하는 자동차이다. 이러한 비접촉 충전을 위해서는 도로에 매설된 급전 시스템과 차량 하부에 장착된 집전 시스템으로 구성된 비접촉 유도전력 전달(IPT, Inductive Power Transfer) 시스템이 필요하며, 급전 시스템은 다시 급전 인버터와 급전선로로, 집전 시스템은 집전 모듈(pick-up)과 집전 레귤레이터로 구성된다. 본 논문에서는 이러한 비접촉 IPT 시스템 각각의 장치를 소개하며, 더불어 구축된 시스템의 성능에 대해서도 소개한다.

TiAlN coatings were deposited on the YT15 tungsten carbide inserts by magnetron sputtering technique. The TiAlN coated tools weredeep cryogenic treatment (DCT) at -196oC for 30 h. The dry turning tests of 40Cr steel were carried out to evaluate performancesof uncoated, no cryogenically treated (NCT) and DCT coated tools on the CA6140A lathe. The effect of the three kinds of tools oncutting forces, cutting temperature, surface qualities and tool wear had been investigated to assess the performance of DCT coatedtools. Results of the investigation showed that the cutting forces and cutting temperature obtained by DCT coated tools weresignificantly decreased in comparison with the uncoated and NCT coated tools, especially at higher cutting speeds. Flank wear ofthe DCT coated inserts was less than that of the NCT coated inserts under the same cutting conditions. The DCT coated insertsproduced a good surface finish and yield a tool life of about 65 min. The wear mechanisms of the DCT coated carbide tools are mainlyabrasive and adhesive wear, accompanied with diffusion and oxidation wear.

Acute cholecystitis as a complication of malarial disease is a rare condition, especially with Plasmodium vivax infection. A 62 year-old-female was admitted via emergency room (ER) due to high fever (40.3°C) and epigastric pain. Initial abdominal ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) scan showed edematous gallbladder with stone, which suggested acute calculous cholecystitis. Emergency percutaneous transhepatic gallbladder drainage (PTGBD) was done with systemic antibiotic therapy. The clinical course, however, unusually worsened with hypotension and intensive care unit (ICU) management was done. Four days after admission multi-focal splenic infarction was developed and Plasmodium vivax infection was diagnosed afterward. The clinical symptoms and laboratory results, including fever and epigastric pain, improved dramatically after anti-malarial treatment and cholecystectomy was done. The resected gallbladder (GB) specimen shows vasculitis pattern with capillary red blood cell (RBC) engorgement, which suggests the cause of cholecystitis was due to Plasmodium vivax rather than GB stone.

Background/Aims Chronic intestinal pseudo-obstruction (CIPO) is a serious, life-threatening motility disorder that is often related to bacterial overgrowth. Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) results in restoration of the normal intestinal microbial community structure. We investigated the efficacy of FMT in the treatment of CIPO patients. Methods Nine patients (age 18-53 years) with CIPO were enrolled in this prospective, open-label study. Patients received FMT for 6 consecutive days through nasojejunal (NJ) tubes and were followed up for 8 weeks after treatment. We evaluated the rate of clinical improvement and remission, feeding tolerance of enteral nutrition, and CT imaging scores of intestinal obstructions. Lactulose hydrogen breath tests were performed before FMT and 8 weeks after FMT to evaluate for the presence small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). Results FMT significantly alleviated bloating symptoms, and symptoms of pain were relieved 2 weeks after FMT. Enteral nutrition administered through a NJ tube after FMT was well-tolerated by 66.7% (6/9) of patients. CT scores of intestinal obstructions were significantly reduced after FMT (P = 0.014). SIBO was eliminated in 71.0% (5/7) of patients. Conclusions This pilot study demonstrated the safety of using FMT. FMT may relieve symptoms in selected patients with CIPO. FMT may also improve patient tolerance of enteral nutrition delivered via a NJ tube. (J Neurogastroenterol Motil 2017;23:289-297)
