Purpose:Based on a previous gene expression study in a mouse model of asthma, we selected 60 candidate genes and investigated their possible roles in human asthma. Methods: In these candidate genes, 90 SNPs were genotyped using MassARRAY technology from 311 asthmatic children and 360 healthy controls of the Hungarian (Caucasian) population. Moreover, gene expression levels were measured by RT PCR in the induced sputum of 13 asthmatics and 10 control individuals. t-tests, chi-square tests, and logistic regression were carried out in order to assess associations of SNP frequency and expression level with asthma. Permutation tests were performed to account for multiple hypothesis testing. Results: The frequency of 4 SNPs in 2 genes differed significantly between asthmatic and control subjects: SNPs rs2240572, rs2240571, rs3735222 in gene SCIN, and rs32588 in gene PPARGC1B. Carriers of the minor alleles had reduced risk of asthma with an odds ratio of 0.64 (0.51-0.80; P=7×10-5) in SCIN and 0.56 (0.42-0.76; P=1.2×10-4) in PPARGC1B. The expression levels of SCIN, PPARGC1B and ITLN1 genes were significantly lower in the sputum of asthmatics. Conclusions: Three potentially novel asthma-associated genes were identified based on mouse experiments and human studies.

We studied the effect of short fibers on the mechanical properties of a magnesium alloy. In particular, deformation mechanisms in a Mg-Al-Sr alloy reinforced with short alumina fibers were studied in situ using neutron diffraction and acoustic emission methods. The fibers’ plane orientation with respect to the loading axis was found to be a key parameter, which influences the acting deformation processes, such as twinning or dislocation slip. Furthermore, the twinning activity was much more significant in samples with parallel fiber plane orientation, which was confirmed by both acoustic emission and electron backscattering diffraction results. Neutron diffraction was also used to assist in analyzing the acoustic emission and electron backscattering diffraction results. The simultaneous application of the two in situ methods, neutron diffraction and acoustic emission, was found to be beneficial for obtaining complementary datasets about the twinning and dislocation slip in the magnesium alloys and composites used in this study.
Uṣṇīṣavijayā-dhāraṇī: The Complete Sanskrit Text Based on Nepalese Manuscripts
Gergely HIDAS 동국대학교 불교학술원 2020 International Journal of Buddhist Thought & Cultur Vol.30 No.2
While the Uṣṇīṣavijayā tradition received considerable scholarly attention regarding its Central and East Asian aspects, examinations of native South Asian evidence have been sparse. This paper offers now the first critical edition and translation of the Uṣṇīṣavijayā-dhāraṇī as it survives in Sanskrit manuscripts. Using ten Nepalese witnesses, the text with the nidāna, dhāraṇī and kalpa sections is presented, which throws light on key ritual practices involving caitya deposits of various materials to provide longevity.
TCP-Based Dynamic Media Stream Adaptation in Ubiquitous Environment
Gergely Homanyi,Gabor Paller 보안공학연구지원센터 2008 International Journal of Hybrid Information Techno Vol.1 No.4
More and more media material is consumed in ubiquitous environment where the service can be experienced over different devices, network conditions, network bearers, etc. Unlike in traditional wireless environments where at least changes of the QoS parameters are controlled by the network, ubiquitous networks are characterized by abrupt changes. Transition from complete disconnectivity to low-cost, high-bandwidth connection can happen in a relatively short time span. Media consumption over such networks are influenced by two, contradictory user requirements. The first requirement is that the users would not like to see quality changes in the media stream. The second requirement is that the user would like to consume the media with the best available quality. This paper presents an adaptation algorithm that aims to reconcile these requirements. Architecture variants of the media adaptation problem and prototyping experiences are also presented.

Objective: The posterolateral extradural suboccipital approach can be used to reach the anterior epidural space and the retro-odontoid regions. The extent of necessary bone removal of the atlas vertebra (C1) has not yet been defined. We studied the changes in the size of the horizontal and vertical surgical windows using stepwise bone removal of C1. A representative case is shown. Methods: The anatomical study was performed bilaterally on five Thiel-fixed human cadavers (mean age, 83.7 years). The surgical window (horizontal×vertical) required to access the retro-odontoid region via a posterolateral approach was measured for an intact C1 posterior arch, after a semicircular inferior partial resection of the C1 arch, after resection of the unilateral hemiarch of C1, and finally after drilling approximately 3 mm from the medial aspect of the lateral mass of C1. Results: The intact C1 resulted in a very narrow surgical window of 6.3 mm×9.7 mm (horizontal×vertical). The vertical window increased to a 13 mm after the semicircular inferior partial resection of the C1 arch and to 17.3 mm in the case of removal of the ipsilateral C1 posterior arch. The bone removal from the medial aspect of the C1 lateral mass resulted in a widening of the horizontal surgical window to 10.3 mm. The final size of the surgical window was 10.3 mm×17.3 mm. The patient with severe kyphoscoliosis of the craniocervical spine was successfully operated on using odontoid and C1–2 facet osteotomies. Conclusion: If only the anterior epidural space or the base of the odontoid needs to be reached, the semicircular inferior partial resection of the C1 arch allows for an adequate surgical window. The tip of the odontoid could only be reached if the ipsilateral posterior arch is resected.

The presence of traditional media content on online platforms is one of the critical issues nowadays, and Article 17 of the European Media Freedom Act (EMFA) seeks to regulate this. However, it can be seen that the current version of the text is not yet free of flaws: both its harmonisation with the Digital Services Regulation, its use of definitions and the media fast track mechanism it contains would require careful legislative scrutiny before the final text is adopted. The article examines if the self-declaration procedure envisaged by the EMFA would create a loophole for rogue media actors and bring confusion at both the European and horizontal levels or if it would fit the original goal of the EMFA, which is to improve the functioning of the internal European media market and to reinforce the independent media.
