Egg production traits are economically important both for egg-laying and broiler lines of chicken. In sheep, the Q249R mutation in BMPR-IB is associated with ovulation rate. The present study cloned a partial chicken BMPR-IB fragment which contained the corresponding ovine Q249R mutation, including partial exon 6 and exon 7 and full-length intron 6. Five nucleotide changes were identified by alignment of the fragment amplified from Jining Bairi and Zang chickens. Among these nucleotide substitutions, the C/T transition at the base position of 35 and the A/G transition at the base position of 287 were found to be highly polymorphic, and named as SNPs C35T and A287G, respectively. For the SNP C35T, 331 hens of a synthetic broiler line were genotyped by a PCR-SSCP approach and allele C was found to be dominant. For the SNP A287G, 604 birds from the synthetic broiler line, a commercial egg-laying line, as well as three Chinese indigenous chicken breeds were genotyped by a PCR-RFLP technique. The associations of these two SNPs with egg production traits in the broiler line were analyzed. The results indicated that both the C35T and the A287G SNPs were not associated with egg production at 33wks and from 33wks to 42 wks (p>0.1), whereas the SNP A287G was associated with egg production from 47 to 56 wks (p<0.05). The dominance genetic effects on this latter trait and on egg production from 33 to 42 wks were significant (p<0.05).

A polymer pyrolysis chemical vapor deposition (CVD) route has been established to synthesize homogeneously dispersed carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in Al nanoflakes within a closed batch reactor, with polyethylene glycol (PEG) and cobalt nitrate as precursors of carbon and catalyst, respectively. A parametric study is conducted to control the CNT growth by optimizing parameters such as synthesis temperature, residence time, and mass ratio of PEG to citric acid to cobalt nitrate. Observations show that the structure, and the size and the amount of CNTs are significantly dependent on the synthesis parameters. The batch reaction mode and the relatively lower synthesis temperature (typically 600oC) qualify the CVD method as a safe and easy way to scale up the synthesis of CNT/Al composite powders for industrial production.

<P>Recent research in heterogeneous catalysis, especially on size-selected model systems under UHV conditions and also in realistic catalytic environments, has proved that it is necessary to think in terms of the exact number of atoms when it comes to catalyst design. This is of utmost importance if the amount of noble metal, gold in particular, is to be reduced for practical reactions like CO oxidation. Here it is shown that on TiO2 only Au6 and Au7 clusters are active for CO oxidation which holds for the single crystal, thin films, and titania clusters deposited on HOPG. Size-selected cluster deposition and TPD methods have been employed to investigate the CO oxidation activity of Au<I>n</I>/TiO2 systems which are compared to recent results reported by Lee <I>et al.</I> to form a consistent picture in which only two species can be regarded as “active”. The efficiency of investigated Au<I>n</I>/(TiO2)93/HOPG composite materials is attributed to carbon-assisted oxygen spillover from gold to support particles and across grain boundaries.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>The probability of creating CO oxidation-active species on TiO2 is very small since only Au6 and Au7 are catalytically active. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c4cp00160e'> </P>
Cloning and characterization of a novel GIGANTEA gene in sweet potato
Tang, W.,Yan, H.,Su, Z.x.,Park, S.C.,Liu, Y.j.,Zhang, Y.g.,Wang, X.,Kou, M.,Ma, D.f.,Kwak, S.S.,Li, Q. Gauthier-Villars ; Elsevier Science Ltd 2017 Vol. No.
<P>The transition from vegetative to reproductive growth, a key event in the lifecycle of a plant, is affected by environmental stresses. The flowering-time regulator GIGANTEA (GI) may be contributing to susceptibility of the regulation of photoperiodic flowering, circadian rhythm control, and abiotic stress resistance in Arabidopsis. However, the role of GI in sweet potato remains unknown. Here, we isolated and characterized a GI gene (IbGI) from sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas [LI Lam). The IbGI cDNA sequence was isolated based on information from a sweet potato transcriptome database. IbGI mRNA transcript levels showed robust circadian rhythm control during the light-dark transition, and the expression of IbGI was stronger in leaves and roots than in stems. IbGI protein is predominantly localized to the nucleus. IbGI expression was upregulated by high temperature, drought, and salt stress but downregulated by cold stress. Overexpressing IbGI in the Arabidopsis gi-2 mutant background rescued its late flowering phenotype and reduced its salt tolerance. Taken together, these results indicate that IbGI shares functions in regulating flowering, the circadian rhythm, and tolerance to some stresses with other GI orthologs. (C) 2017 Elsevier Masson SAS. An experiment was performed to evaluate the effects of dietary metabolizable energy (ME) and lysine on carcass characteristics and meat quality in Arbor Acres (AA) broilers from 1 to 56 days of age. A total of 2,970 1-d-old male broiler chicks were randomly allocated to nine dietary treatments (three ME levels in combination with three lysine levels), and dietary ME and lysine concentrations were formulated by varying corn, soybean meal, tallow, and L-lysine sulfate concentrations. Live body weight (BW), carcass weight (CW), dressing percent, breast muscle weight (BMW), yield of breast muscle, muscle color (CIE L*, a*, and b*), pH values 45 min and 24 h postmortem ($pH_{45}$, and $pH_{24}$), meat shear force value (SFV), and water loss rate (WLR) were evaluated. Results showed that live body weight and dressing percent increased (p<0.05) as dietary energy increased. Higher dietary lysine content improved breast muscle weight. Neither carcass weight nor yield of breast muscle was affected by dietary energy or lysine content. Higher ME increased the b* value (p = 0.067) and $pH_{24}$ value (p<0.05), whereas it decreased SFV (p<0.05) and WLR (p = 0.06). Only water loss rate was influenced (p<0.01) by dietary lysine, which was higher in broilers from the high lysine diet as compared to those from medium or low lysine diets. The $pH_{45}$ value and L* value of breast muscle were not affected by ME or lysine. Significant interaction of dietary ME and lysine was found on a* value of breast muscle. These results indicated that dietary ME and lysine had important effects on breast muscle growth and meat quality, however their effects were different. Different concentrations of dietary ME and lysine might be considered to improve meat quality.

Purpose: Mortality rates following hip fracture surgery have been well-studied. This study was conducted to examine mortality rates in asymptomatic patients presenting for treatment of acute hip fractures with concurrent positive COVID-19(+) tests compared to those with negative COVID-19(–) tests. Materials and Methods: A total of 149 consecutive patients undergoing hip fracture surgery during the COVID-19 pandemic at two academic medical centers were reviewed retrospectively. Patients were divided into two groups for comparative analysis: one group included asymptomatic patients with COVID-19+ tests versus COVID-19– tests. The primary outcome was mortality at 30-days and 90-days. Results: COVID-19+ patients had a higher mortality rate than COVID-19– patients at 30-days (26.7% vs 6.0%, P=0.005) and 90-days (41.7% vs 17.2%, P=0.046) and trended towards an increased length of hospital stay (10.1 ±6.2 vs 6.8±3.8 days, P=0.06). COVID-19+ patients had more pre-existing respiratory disease (46.7% vs 11.2%, P=0.0002). Results of a Cox regression analysis showed an increased risk of mortality at 30-days and 90- days from COVID-19+ status alone without an increased risk of death in patients with pre-existing chronic respiratory disease. Conclusion: Factors including time to surgery, age, preexisting comorbidities, and postoperative ambulatory status have been proven to affect mortality and complications in hip fracture patients; however, a positive COVID19 test result adds another variable to this process. Implementation of protocols that will promote prompt orthogeriatric assessments, expedite patient transfer, limit operating room traffic, and optimize anesthesia time can preserve the standard of care in this unique patient population.

Objective To determine physical activity, sleep, and nutrition patterns in individuals with cerebral palsy (CP) and investigate the association of Gross Motor Function Classification System (GMFCS) and age with these health behaviors. Methods A cross-sectional study was conducted in an outpatient setting. Participants included adolescents and adults with CP (n=28; GMFCS level I–V; mean age 35.1±14.4 years). An Exercise Questionnaire or Leisure Time Physical Activity Questionnaire was used to measure physical activity in adolescents and adults, respectively. Sleep quality was measured using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). An adapted version of the PrimeScreen questionnaire was used to assess nutrition. Linear regression analyses were performed to investigate the association between GMFCS and age with physical activity, sleep, and nutrition. Results The average total physical activity was 29.2±30.0 min/day. Seventy-five percent of the participants had poor sleep quality (PSQI score >5). Seventy-one percent reported “fair” eating behaviors; none reported “excellent” eating behaviors. Neither GMFCS nor age were significantly associated with PSQI score, PrimeScreen score, or total physical activity. A negative correlation existed between sleep quantity (hr/night) and PSQI score (r=-0.66, p=0.01). Conclusion The triad of health components, consisting of physical activity, sleep, and nutrition, was not associated with GMFCS or age in our sample of 28 individuals with CP, suggesting that these three health behaviors should be assessed during clinical encounters of CP in adolescents and adults at all levels of the GMFCS.
