Acrylamide assisted photoinitiator-free photografting of acrylamido dyes onto wool

<P>Upon UV irradiation wool fabrics can be photografted with photoactive acrylamido dyes at room temperature without photoinitiaors, which is eco-friendly coloration process compared with conventional adsorption-based dyeing. Acrylamide addition as a comonomer can improve the photografting probably by reducing the steric hindrance between the bulky dyes during the photocopolymerization. Even without photointiators and neutral salts, the optimal K/S values of the photografted wool reached upto 18.7 and 18.5 for Reactive Red 84 and Yellow 39 dyes respectively. The optimal UV-grafting coloration can be achieved when a UV energy of 25 J/cm(2) was irradiated on the padded fabrics with 6.3 %owf dye containing 0.65 mole ratio of acrylamide to the dyes. Furthermore, the color fastness of the grafted fabrics was as good as those of conventionally dyed fabrics due to the copolymerization of dyes and comonomers.</P>

<P>We demonstrate organic residue free, bandgap-graded Cu2Zn(Sn1-xGex)S-4 (CZTGeS) thin-film solar cells based on metal chalcogenide complex (MCC) ligand capped nanocrystals (NCs). The bandgap of the CZTGeS films is tuned by varying the amount of Sn2S64- MCC ligand absorbed on the surface of the Cu2ZnGeS4 (CZGeS) NCs, without an undesirable postselenization process. Using CZGeS NCs inks with three different Sn/(Ge+Sn) ratios, bandgap-graded CZTGeS thin films are obtained via multicoating and annealing procedures. Compositional and spectroscopic analyses along the film thickness confirm that the bandgraded CZTGeS absorber layer, with a gradually increasing bandgap from the back contact to the p-n junction, is successfully accomplished. Compared with an ungraded band structured CZTGeS cell, this normal grading structure facilitates both higher short circuit current and open-circuit voltage, facilitating a power conversion efficiency of 6.3%.</P>

Objective: The study was conducted to evaluate the effects of the absorbent (a mixture of activated carbon and hydrated sodium calcium aluminosilicate) on growth performance, blood profiles and hepatic genes expression in broilers fed diets naturally contaminated with aflatoxin. Methods: A total of 1,200 one-day-old male chicks were randomly assigned to 6 treatments with 10 replicate cages per treatment. The dietary treatments were as follows: i) control (basal diets); ii) 50% contaminated corn; iii) 100% contaminated corn; iv) control+1% adsorbent; v) 50% contaminated corn+1% absorbent; vi) 100% contaminated corn+1% absorbent. Results: During d 1 to 21, feeding contaminated diets reduced (p<0.05) body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), and average daily feed intake (ADFI), but increased (p<0.05) feed-to-gain ratio (F/G). The absorbent supplementation increased (p<0.05) BW, ADG, and ADFI. There were interactions (p<0.05) in BW, ADG, and ADFI between contaminated corn and absorbent. Overall, birds fed 100% contaminated diets had lower (p<0.05) final BW and ADG, but higher (p<0.05) F/G compared to those fed control diets. The absorbent addition increased (p<0.05) serum albumin concentration on d 14 and 28 and total protein (TP) level on d 28, decreased (p<0.05) alanine transaminase activity on d 14 and activities of aspartate aminotransferase and alkaline phosphatase on d 28. Feeding contaminated diets reduced (p<0.05) hepatic TP content on d 28 and 42. The contaminated diets upregulated (p<0.05) expression of interleukin-6, catalase (CAT), and superoxide dismutase (SOD), but downregulated (p<0.05) glutathione S-transferase (GST) expression in liver. The absorbent supplementation increased (p<0.05) interleukin-1β, CAT, SOD, cytochrome P450 1A1 and GST expression in liver. There were interactions (p<0.05) in the expression of hepatic CAT, SOD, and GST between contaminated corn and absorbent. Conclusion: The results suggest that the naturally aflatoxin-contaminated corn depressed growth performance, while the adsorbent could partially attenuate the adverse effects of aflatoxin on growth performance, blood profiles and hepatic genes expression in broilers.

Background: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation is increasing, as rituximab has become widely used for B-cell lymphoma. Thus, prevention and management of HBV reactivation are important in HBV-endemic areas. Methods: Hepatitis B virus (HBV) reactivation in HBV surface antigen (HBsAg)-positive patients and HBsAg-negative/HBV core antibody (HBcAb)-positive patients who received rituximab-containing chemotherapy was investigated by the Asia Lymphoma Study Group via retrospective (n=340), and the results were compared to cross-sectional analysis with patients who were prospectively monitored in a single institute (n=127). The goal of the study was to define the frequency of HBV reactivation and the efficacy of antiviral prophylaxis. Results: HBV reactivation was found in 27.8% of HBsAg-positive patients (45/162) in the retrospective analysis, being significantly less frequent in patients receiving antiviral prophylaxis than those not (22.9%, 32/140 versus 59.1%, 13/22; p<0.001). Lamivudine was most commonly used (96/162, 59.3%), but more than 20% of HBsAg-positive patients showed breakthrough HBV reactivation. In the cross-sectional analysis, a reduced rate of HBV reactivation occurred for entecavir as compared with lamivudine prophylaxis (6.3% versus 39.3%; p<0.05). HBV DNA monitoring of HBsAg-negative/HBcAb-positive patients in the cross-sectional analysis showed HBV reactivation in only 2.4% of cases. Conclusions: This is the largest study of HBV reactivation in patients receiving rituximab-containing chemotherapy to date, and we defined the probability of HBV reactivation in an HBV-endemic region.

During the past year, the design of most accelerator systems went through major iterations, and initial research and developments was started on the prototyping of several key components.

<P>2-deoxyribose-5-phosphate aldolase (DERA) is a class I aldolase that catalyzes aldol condensation of two aldehydes in the active site, which is particularly germane in drug manufacture. Structural and biochemical studies have shown that the active site of DERA is typically loosely packed and displays broader substrate specificity despite sharing conserved folding architecture with other aldolases. The most distinctive structural feature of DERA compared to other aldolases is short and flexible C-terminal region. This region is also responsible for substrate recognition. Therefore, substrate tolerance may be related to the C-terminal structural features of DERA. Here, we determined the crystal structures of full length and C-terminal truncated DERA from Streptococcus suis (SsDERA). In common, both contained the typical (alpha/beta)(8) TIM-barrel fold of class I aldolases. Surprisingly, C-terminal truncation resulting in missing the last alpha 9 and beta 8 secondary elements, allowed DERA to maintain activity comparable to the fulllength enzyme. Specifically, Arg186 and Ser205 residues at the C-terminus appeared mutually supplemental or less indispensible for substrate phosphate moiety recognition. Our results suggest that DERA might adopt a shorter C-terminal region than conventional aldolases during evolution pathway, resulting in a broader range of substrate tolerance through active site flexibility.</P>

<P>PbS and PbS/CdS core/shell colloidal quantum dots (QDs) were mixed with As2S3 glass powders to prepare solid composite materials. PbS QDs showed an absorption band centered at a wavelength of lambda = 1478 nm and a photoluminescence (PL) band centered at lambda = 1547 nm. PbS/CdS core/shell QDs had higher PL intensity than did bare PbS QDs. Solid composites made by mixing QDs and As2S3 glass powders showed clear PL bands at lambda = 1385 nm. Optical fibers of As2S3 glass can be prepared from these composite materials if appropriate scale-up technology is realized. (C) 2015 Elsevier BM. All rights reserved.</P>

Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of dietary energy and lipase supplementation on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, serum profiles, intestinal morphology, small intestinal digestive enzyme activities, biochemical index of intestinal development and noxious gas emission in weaning pigs. Methods: A total of 240 weaning pigs ([Yorkshire×Landrace]×Duroc) with an average body weight (BW) of 7.3±0.12 kg were used in this 28-d experiment. Weaning pigs were randomly allocated to 4 dietary treatments in a 2×2 factorial arrangement with 2 levels of energy (net energy = 2,470 kcal/kg for low energy diet and 2,545 kcal/kg for basal diet) and 2 levels of lipase (0 and 1.5 U/g of lipase) according to BW and sex. There were 6 replications (pens) per treatment and 10 pigs per pen (5 barrows and 5 gilts). Results: Weaning pigs fed the low energy diet had lower (p<0.05) gain-to-feed ratio (G:F) throughout the experiment, apparent digestibility of dry matter, nitrogen, ether extract, and gross energy during d 0 to 14, average daily gain during d 15 to 28, lipase activity in duodenum and ileum and protein/DNA in jejunum (p<0.05), respectively. Lipase supplementation had no effect on growth performance but affected apparent nutrient digestibility (p<0.05) on d 14 and enhanced lipase activity in the duodenum and ileum and protease activity in duodenum and jejunum of pigs (p<0.05) fed the low energy diet. Lipase reduced serum low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) and triglyceride (TG), NH3 production (p<0.05) from the feces. Conclusion: The low energy diet decreased G:F throughout the experiment and nutrient digestibility during d 0 to 14 as well as lipase activity in duodenum and ileum. Lipase supplementation increased nutrient digestibility during d 0 to 14 and exerted beneficial effects on lipase activity in duodenum and ileum as well as protease activity in duodenum and jejunum, while reduced serum LDL-C, TG and fecal NH3.
