Three new steroids 3-oxocholest-1,22-dien-12β-ol (1), 3-oxocholest-1,4-dien-20β-ol (2), 3-oxocholest-1,4-dien-12β-ol (3), and three known steroids (20S)-20-Hydroxyergosta-1,4,24(28)-trien-3-one (4) [7a], 5α,8α-Epidioxycholesta-6,22-dien-3β-ol (5) [10] and 5-cholestene-3β,12β-diol (6) [11] were isolated from a soft coral Dendronephthya gigantea. Their chemical structures and relative stereochemistry were elucidated by the analysis of HRMS and 2-D NMR spectroscopic data. Three new sesterterpenoids, phorbaketals L-N (1-3), were isolated from a marine sponge of the genus Phorbas and their complete structures were elucidated via analysis of HRFABMS and NMR spectroscopic data. phorbaketal N (3) showed potent cytotoxicity against human pancreas cancer cells(1C50=11.4uM). ⓒ2014 Elsevier Ltd. Comparison of the Functional Components in Netted and Cantaloupe Melons

This study assessed the utility of netted melon ‘Top Earl’s’ and cantaloupe melon ‘Alex’ as functional fruits by analysing their moisture content, vitreous sugar, folic acid, citric acid, and beta-carotene levels. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) was used to analyse the free sugar, folic acid, citric acid, and beta-carotene levels. The moisture content was not significantly different between ‘Top Earl’s’ and ‘Alex.’ The glucose, sucrose, and fructose contents were three, two, and one-and-a-half fold higher in ‘Alex’ than in ‘Top Earl’s.’ Moreover, citric acid was approximately three times higher in ‘Alex’ than that in Top Earl’s.’ However, the folic acid content was higher in ‘Top ‘Earl’s’ than ‘Alex,’ and the amount was 124 μg / 100 g FW and 112 μg / 100 g FW respectively. ‘Beta-carotene was undetectable in ‘Top Earl’s,’ whereas it was 1000 μg / 100 g FW in ‘Alex.’ β-carotene, a substance that is converted in the body into vitamin A and acts as an antioxidant, is an important component in healthy food. These results suggested that the cantaloupe melon ‘Alex’ has a higher free sugar content and functional ingredients, such as antioxidants, including citric acid and beta carotene, than the netted melon ‘Top Earl’s.’

Three new sterols, 5α, 8α-epidioxy-24-norcho-lesta-6.9(11), 22-trien-3β-ol (1), 5α, 8α-epidioxy-cholesta-6.9(11), 24-trien-3β, 25-diol (3), with four known sterols (4-7) were isolated from a marine sponge Monanchora sp, Their chemical structures were elucidated by extensive spectro-scopic analysis. Compounds 1 and 3-7 showed moderate cytotoxicity against several human carcinoma cell lines including renal (A-498), pancreatic (PANC-1 and MLA paCa-2), and colorectal (HCT 116) cancer cell lines.

Two new benzophenones, acredinones A(1) and B(2), were isolated from a marine-sponge-associated Acre-monium sp. Fungus. Their chemical structures were elucidated on the interpretation of spectroscopic data. The structure of 1 was confirmed by palladium-catalyzed hydrogenation, followed by spectroscopic data analysis. Acredinones A (1) and B (2) inhibited the outward K currents of the insulin secreting cell line INS-1 with IC50 values of 0.59 and 1.0 um, respectively.
The Beneficial Effects of Dioscorea Batatas Dence Peel Extracts on Skin Health

The demands for bioactive compounds from natural sources have increased in the cosmeceutical industry. Dioscorea Batatas Dence Flesh (DBF) with various bioactive substances is widely used in the cosmetic industry, while most of Dioscorea Batatas Dence Peel (DBP) is not utilized and is discarded. However, recent studies have shown that DBP has higher bioactive substances than DBF. In this study, we examined the skin biological activities of DBP extract from different solvents. DBP extracts obtained by 70% ethanol (70% EtOH DBP) and 95% ethanol (95% EtOH DBP) were shown to have skin whitening activity by inhibiting the melanin content of B16F10 cells and tyrosinase activity in 20 μg/mL. Ethyl acetate extract of DBP (EA DBP) also inhibited tyrosinase activity in 5 μg/mL. In HDF cells, treatment of DBP extracts after UVB irradiation (20 mJ/cm²) up-regulated type I pro-collagen (Pro-COL1A1) expression and down-regulated matrix metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1) level. Additionally, DBP extracts inhibited MMP-1 activity in a dose-dependent manner. The results of this study indicated that DBP extracts can be used as cosmetic ingredients for skin-whitening and anti-photoaging.
